this might be a weird question, and maybe even a bit too personal, so feel free to ignore this if I'm overstepping boundaries- but do you have any advice for how to get... stronger, or more fierce? I desperately want to be a militant activist, I'm tired of seeing nazis get away with what they're doing and im tired of not being able to defend people who need it most, but I have a long history of extreme trauma and the thought of getting in a fight horrifies me, and I'm not very mentally stable.

When I involved myself in antifa, I was coming out of a solid 2 year depression where I sat inside doing no exercise and hating myself, I was not as feirce or tough as I should be. And i constantly told myself I wasnt good enough in this state, so I think I know exactly where you’re coming from.

First bit of advice I can give you is just keep exercising consistently, if you go to gym or train in martial arts or even do 100 pushups, sit ups, and squats in your room. Its good for helping with depression for starters, and the slight improvement in mental health will make the rest easier. It’ll also build your confidence if you Know you can run that bit longer and punch that bit harder… and keep doing this.

Second is your spirit, and your anger. Back in the early days I was not cut out for physical confrontation, whilst all my mates were hench and tanks, and i still went to every protest I could and expected a fight. Keep going to protests, chant and march, help physically block roads, do everything protest calls for as it isnt always violence. This will build your nerve and your mood at protests, you wont jus stand at the back too scared to see push come to shove, you’ll be at the front shouting.

In antifascism, especially in the UK, fighting isn’t the most common tactic and doesnt happen all the time. Sometimes you’re linking arms to stop police breaking your lines, you’re pushing police to break theirs, you’re all surrounding the fascists and drowing their rhetoric in chants. A fight wont always happen but a time when you need strength and speed will always be there, and you’ll need your anger.

Fights terrified me, and before my first antifa related one I thought I’d never be a good actvist, then when I saw them pushing my mate my feet jus led me and my fists swung. You may surprise yourself further down the line, and dont forget you aren’t just a good activist jus cos you can fight.
