My long-overdue Wintersday story is done! It was quite a learning experience, and there's probably a bunch of mistakes, but it was an idea I just had to get out of my head somehow.

Summary: Wintersday returns to Tyria! Commander Liana brings a reluctant Mai Trin along to Divinity's Reach to check out the festivities. (Post-EoD AU)

During the writing of this, I had a whole bunch of extra little ideas that I wanted to add, but ended up removing. If you want to know some of the little plot points that didn't make it, keep reading below the cut!

Jade Bot So I was originally going to have Mai bring a Jade Bot along with her, one borrowed from Yao under the condition that she use it to take photos/recordings of the festival for them, tying into the existing mentions about differences between the Tyrian and Canthan new year festivals. Mai was going to fly the bot around the Crown Pavilion, and maybe draw attention from someone who had heard about Cantha opening up and had never seen Jade Tech before, and a few kids who thought it was a new toy that they could pester their parents into buying. It was a cute idea, but got cut because Mai and Liana were supposed to be not trying to draw attention to themselves.

Mai’s past The part about Mai knowing about the Canthan District was originally going to be expanded on a little, with her deciding to tell Liana more about it while they’re in the bar at the end. I kinda have a rough headcanon for Mai’s backstory going on and wanted to lean into that a little. It would have included Liana realising that Mai’s behaviour at the start of the story could have been about recalling some bad memories of her childhood rather than a fear of being recognised. I cut most of this out because it’s supposed to be a fun Wintersday fic, not a ‘Mai angsts about her past’ fic.

Comfy Cat Chair So, the big fluffy cat chair was going to be a thing. The part where Mai and Liana are passing by a row of shops on their way to the Dead End bar was going to include going into the shop selling stuffed toys, with the massive cat chair right in the middle. Mai was going to be all “This is amazing and I need it” with Liana being the voice of reason with “You’d never fit this in your apartment” and Mai being sad at having to leave the store empty-handed. This part stayed in almost to the end, but decided to cut it down to Liana secretly buying her the mini plush version as a gift. But you can believe that Mai stumbled across the big fluffball the following day :)

Feilim had to remain in Canthan medical care longer than he would have liked (longer than the canon Commander). He got sick of lying down all day, so a kind of battery pack was fashioned so he could get up and move around without immediately collapsing from fatigue.

Nima, though his partner, was also an Elonian ambassador, so they couldn’t express nearly enough affection for one another until Feilim was less of a controversial figure.

Yay, my first post here <33!

I'd like y'all to meet my main character from Guild Wars 2 (he dropped his pauldron, be nice). I love this game on so many levels, you can't even imagine <3.

Also I'm extremely happy that I've finally found some time to do this little big fella justice (6 ft tall – if you know, you know). Hopefully, you'll see some more of him in the near future :>
