I want to take away all of your sadness. I want to heal you and love you and have so many good days that they overwrite all the bad ones in your past. My dream is for you to be happy.

Sometimes people think they know you. They know a few facts about you, and they piece you together in a way that makes sense to them. And if you don’t know yourself very well, you might even believe that they are right. But the truth is, that isn’t you. That isn’t you at all.

Hello, I'm hoping this is a linguistics-related question. Is there any reason why my brain interprets the phrase "???" as a weird, upwards-lifting "nnnnng" sound? as if it were trying to say huh?? I would like to know what you think
It’s a good question!
I’m afraid my answer will be less linguistic-y than you might have hoped. Although it does have a lot to do with language and human communication!
The first thing you will wanna notice is that the english language has a lot of association that goes like
raised tone at the end of a sentence/uttering = question
Of course, this is not 100% accurate across the board, but even if we were to take something simple like
“We bought milk.“ vs “We bought milk?“
When you read this, in your head or out loud, your tone will quite naturally go on an upwards incline at the end of a sentence. This is a signal to people listening that communicates the question mark without them ever seeing it. Anyone who listens to you read these two sentences will know which one was written with a question mark, right? Even if they can’t see it written out.
Our language skills, complex and wonderful as they are, are not limited to only the sounds that make up our words. Language is also tone, strange noises, the speed of our words, the rhythm of them, the stress… every single one of these things will change the meaning of anything you utter.
What I’m saying is, that question-ish sound of “nnng?” carries as much information in it as the word “What?!”. It indicates that you are either confused, or you are questioning something, right?
Now on to the “???”.
I guess it depends on the person, but you reading “???” as a sound makes perfect sense. We don’t pronounce question marks. They’re just written markers to indicate that something is a question, because pieces of paper can’t “nnng?” But your brain can. Your brain knows that “???” = question. And when you see only these marks on a screen or paper, your brain automatically goes “I know that that is!” and supplies you a noise that is very close in meaning to the question marks, enough to replace them and satisfy your desire to read something out loud in your head.
What’s REALLY interesting is that HOW you read these question marks isn’t always gonna be the same person to person. Some would assign this unpronounceable phrase a noise, just as you did. Others might associate it not with a sound but with a face. This is how I operate. To me, “???” indicates questioning, but not in noise form but in a facial expression.
this face
anyway, language is fascinating.
