I’ve talked about it before, but I just listened to “Come Home With Me” from the West End version of Hadestown, and it really is striking that the actors are using their natural accents.
Obviously, Dónal being Irish is one thing.
But Grace’s Northern vowels are what really strikes me the most.
JUST in that one song, you hear:
[kʊm] - ‘come’ (RP [kʌm])
[fɔw(l̴)] - ‘fall’ (RP [fɔːl̴])
[ʋɨkɔw(l̴)] - ‘recall’ (RP [ɹɪkɔːl̴])
I’m from the Midlands, and my family are Northern. I don’t think this is quite my accent anymore (I’ve spent too much time in East Anglia and the West Country), but it was at one time, and it’s an accent I should in theory be VERY used to, and yet its appearance in a theatre show is STILL very marked to me.
