🍷Juice’s Famous Mulled Wine Poached Pears🍐
So, every year I make these bad boys around Christmas/Yule/Festivus/Whatever, and I’m super hype to make them again this year. The mulled wine makes a great wassail, so don’t toss it out, grab a cup of it! Give it to a tree! Pour it on your in laws! Just go crazy! You can use this as a spell, if you’d like, lord knows it’s got enough witchy components, or just use it as wassail material, or just eat and drink it and enjoy! Apologies as usual for the terribly written recipe, I don’t measure anything ever forever, so I can’t tell you how much of any of this I use, just what I use.
Ingredients
2 bottles cheap merlot or other red wine
8-10 danjou Pears
Brown sugar or sweetener of your choice
Cinnamon sticks
Whole cloves
Whole nutmeg
Whole ginger
Whole allspice
Whole star anise
Dried or fresh orange peel
Cheesecloth
Cooking twine or unwaxed dental floss
Orange juice or cranberry juice
Heavy whipping cream
Mascarpone cheese
Powdered sugar
Instructions
Halve the Pears and remove their cores

Dump pears, sugar and a cup or two of juice into crockpot
Dump wine into crockpot until pears all have a fair amount of wine on them. They don’t need to be perfectly submerged but they should be mostly under the liquid. This may take 1 bottle, it may take 2, it may take half a bottle. Idk what your crockpot looks like. Get two just in case.
Take crock out of crockpot and cover. Put in your fridge and soak for at least 8 hours, 12 if you’re able. This is def a “night before” kind of recipe cuz you’re going to need to cook them for several hours as well so keep that in mind.
Remove crock and allow to warm a bit. I know crockpots don’t actually explode cuz they’re made to be heated but it always scares the fuck out of me putting a cold thing in a hot thing or Vice versa. Idk. You do you.
Take all spices and smoosh them with a grinder of some type. They don’t have to be finely ground, they can just be sorta mushed to small bits so they release their flavor later, and in fact the ginger can be just chunked up.
Cut a 6” by 6” piece of cheese cloth and add all the spices to the middle of it and tie that sucker up like a cute spicy bindle(That’s the sticks with sacks you see hobos carrying in pop culture).
Put the bindle into the wine and make sure he’s way nicely submerged.
Put the crock back into the heater, and turn it to 8 hours.
The mix will need to be lightly missed a couple times throughout the 8 hours, and I like to move the bindle around the pot meow and then to make sure the spices really infuse . If you’re not getting it to smell like Christmas and joy by 4 hours, take the bindle out, smush it more and remake the bindle.
When you serve, take some of the whipping cream, a generous blop of mascarpone, and however much powdered sugar you like in your whipped cream and make whipped cream withthem. I suggest using an egg beater, whisks and mascarpone don’t mix well. If any of my vegan pals in here have an alternative I’m all ears for that as well.
Serve each pear with whipped cream and maybe a glass of the mulled wine and enjoy!
Disclaimers and warnings:
This dish does NOT lose the booze when cooked. It is not appropriate for anyone who is not supposed to or does not wish to imbibe alcohol, and for anyone who does, be careful, these pack a punch, treat each pear as an alcoholic beverage. The wine is, ironically, less boozy than the pears by the end of the process, but still be careful.
On that note, when you open this each time, keep your fucking face away from it. I am not kidding. There is a huge cloud of alcohol steam and at best it burns the eyes and nose, by way of being pure alcohol, at worst, you’ll get that, plus steam burns. Watch yourself.

Woke up this morning in a terrible mood. I fought with everyone and just felt miserable. So once I was able to pull myself toward myself I took some time for myself. First I went to gym and did a little cardio. The exercise got my spirits up but it was only after a bubble bath and some red wine that I was able to relax. I am going to take the day off today and try to do things that make me feel good to get myself out of this funk. Excuse my ratchet ass bathtub.

Again, this brand does not disappoint. Still new to this game of wine tasting but this is by far one of my favorites. This pinot noir is delicate but has depth while having a nebulous after taste. Has a…rich taste to it maybe it’s mocha like the Satin Red version.
