Archives Road Trip: Minnesota
On the heels of the national women’s movement in the early 1970s, a group of feminist artists began meeting in Minnesota. In 1973 they formed the Women’s Art Registry of Minnesota, a cooperative best known by its acronym, WARM. Indeed, the group’s mission was to foster a warm and welcoming support system for women artists. One of their signature achievements was opening a gallery in Minneapolis in 1976. “In the past women didn’t have the chance to see what other women were making. We need the opportunity to show, and to get feedback from other women,” remarked artist Terry Becker in this article from the Twin Cities Reader.
This issue of the Twin Cities Reader is on view in our exhibition Off the Beaten Track: A Road Trip through the Archives of American Art on view through June 3 in our Lawrence A. Fleischman Gallery in Washington, D.C.
