R.I.P. to David Ogden Stiers. A man who had the unenviable job of having to replace Major Frank Burns, as the foil to Hawkeye and B.J. on M.A.S.H. He also did a ton of voice-over work including Disney's Beauty and the Beast, Pochaontas, and The Hunchback of Note Dame. To me, most importantly he played Al Meyer, father of Lane Meyer, in the cinematic classic Better Off Dead. A 70's baseball icon has left us. Oscar Gamble has been promoted to the big club in the sky. Oscar will mostly be remembered for his epic hair, but he was talented enough to play 17 years in the bigs. Oscar was discovered by the great Buck O'Neil and broke in to the pros at age 19. He was a talented left-handed bat that teams kept dealing for. Oscar should still hold the title for most awkward airbrushed "Traded" baseball cards. His best year was in 1977, when he crushed 31 as a member of the South Side Hitmen. In those 17 years, Oscar donned uniforms for 7 different teams. Which is also the same number of continents that his glorious hair could be seem from. Another legendary play-by-play broadcaster has left us to call games in the big Arryo Seco in the sky. The man narrated so many Saturday afternoons to millions and millions of college football fans. A man who expanded the vocabulary of those fans with such phrases like, big uglies, hoss, Granddaddy of them all and Whooooaaa Nellie. He was a distinct and genuine voice who wanted to bring the fans in, to share and enjoy the game and never overshadow the game. Keith Jackson provided the vocals on so many memorable sporting moments, not just college football. Another major voice on the soundtrack of my life has passed. Growing up in Southern California the voice of Dick Enberg was a prevalent as Chick Hearn, Tom Kelly and Vin Scully. In the 70's did play-by-play for the Rams, UCLA Bruins and the California Angels. During the 80's he moved on to being the voice of the AFC for NBC. Then to CBS when NBC bowed out of doing the NFL. Many a memorable @broncos moment was described by him and his long time color analyst, the great Merlin Olsen.(The Drive, the Fumble and Super Bowl XXXII). His long and memorable career also took him to hoops, where he teamed up with the great Al Maguire. He also ventured across the pond to do tennis with the Bud Collins at Wimbledon, as a part of his lengthy resume. Look the man also appeared in the Naked Gun! He was a gem in the booth. On this date in 1998, the English city of Hill was almost destroyed. It was almost wiped off the map when British rockers when Stome Roses front man and solo artist Ian Brown squared off against The Verve's Richard Ashcroft. These two became engaged in a Martial Art fight in front of a downtown Hull Tesco Express. The fight was about who had the highest and sharpest cheekbones.
