The Invigilator
From Latin: invigilo
I stay awake; I watch over
Originally from the context of educational exams, in our case as performance makers an invigilator is a person who:
- is in a position of trust that requires availability, integrity and vigilance;
- assists artists in preparing and presenting a performance piece;
- makes sure that they have everything they need;
- is briefed about all details of the performance in relation to artist, action and audience;
- ensures and safeguards that they or the audience keep to the established rules and conditions established by the artist/s;
- monitors the process before, during and after and keeps time;
- provides a generally pleasant and supportive environment;
- is involved in risk assessments and is aware of potential risk scenarios to the health and safety of the artist/s, audience members, and non-human bodies and solutions.
- if needed, is aware of safe words or safe signs from the artists, in case of which to interact/intervene in the performance as agreed.
