One of my favorite recurring details in the Queen's Thief is how the gods show approval by wounding characters in meaningful ways.
Obviously this one in The Thief:
I was quite certain I'd have a feather-shaped white scar. Getting across the makeshift bridge had been well done, and the god of thieves agreed, although some might not recognize his sign of approval.
But especially this one in Thick as Thieves, when Kamet decides to go back to the well to look for Costis:
I stretched my neck and turned my head, listening for any sign of life, and impaled myself on a splinter of broken wood.
"Monsters of hell," I whispered sharply, pulling away from the splinter that was sticking into my skin perilously close to my eye.
Immakuk, who lost an eye to Unse-Sek, approves.

I lied, I lied so hard, I can’t just NOT do Queen’s Thief Appreciation Week. Forget deadlines, here’s Gen facing the fate of all thieves because I thought we could all use some extra pain in our lives.
#reblogging this with the text because aparently emily can see the future#queen's thief#I mean I wouldn't have removed the text#but

While I loved working on the official Queen’s Thief character lineup, I worked on it over a year and a half ago, so as Return of the Thief’s release drew closer, I knew I wanted to do a newer piece to celebrate. I wanted to include Pheris in this one, and explore a more dynamic composition, and saturate it with symbolism. So without further ado, here it is:
It’s the longest I’ve ever spent on a single piece— about eight weeks, altogether, and I’m really pleased with how everyone came out. I’m going to put all the symbolism below the cut, but here are closeups so you can play I Spy:

Here it is---the full lineup of Queen's Thief protagonists. Working on this piece meant so much to me, even more so because I was getting feedback directly from Megan on what she wanted these characters to look like. That said, plenty of my own style snuck in (see: Kamet's freckles), and knowing MWT's record of letting her readers figure things out for themselves, I hope these "official" designs don't dissuade anyone from bringing their own interpretation to these characters. There are so many stunning artists and creators in this fandom, and it's the spectrum of styles and designs and depictions that have brought this series so much vibrant life for over two decades.
Gen, after all, would want to keep people guessing.
I'm humbled to have been asked to do this illustration, and I can't wait to see the outpouring of creativity Return of the Thief brings. Be blessed in your endeavors.
#I'm#everything here is so good#Gen's expression and how boyish he looks#and Costis sideeying him#And Sophos!!!#all of them are so good I love me a stocky helen#queen's thief

I was thinking about universe swap AUs where characters from very dark (and often abusive) universes get brought into a much kinder universe. Those AUs are my favourite but consider:
Canon Zuko is temporarily brought into a universe where his father never hurt him, his mother never left, Azula adores her big brother- and he has no idea why this universe is so much kinder to him than his own

War, then.
-
(Please click for high-res; Tumblr was not kind to this one!)
The relationship between these two gets me where it hurts, every time…So when the concept “wrathful Eddisian pietà with floral symbolism” struck me like lightning, I couldn’t not paint it. Why suffer alone, right?
I had to do a bit of research to find flowers that are native to a Mediterranean-type climate and that also have appropriate meanings. For the embroidery on Eddis’ mantle, I chose valerian for readiness and purple columbine for resolution; growing around them are hyacinth for sorrow, hyssop for sacrifice, and tansy, for the declaration of war.

I truly enjoy how much Animorphs is like “here are our young heroes, each with a distinctive trope to fill in the group!” And then it makes you watch how the pressure of each person’s role grinds them to dust. And also they have homework.

I inherited this country when I was only a child, Nahuseresh. I have held it. I have fought down rebellious barons. I've fought Sounis to keep the land on this side of the mountains. I have killed men and watched them hang. I've seen them tortured to keep this country safe and mine. How did you think I did this if I was a fool with cow eyes for any handsome man with gold in his purse?
― Megan Whalen Turner, The Queen of Attolia
Finally finished this piece! It's good to be back on this website:)

I've been rereading the Queen's Thief books and I know we all love to talk about all the romantic bits but I feel like no one really talks about the moment where Irene refuses to get married at Hephestia's altar:
Pale with fury, Attolia pulled her hand away from Eugenides and clenched her fists. “How did I catch you when you hid in my palace? How did I know you moved through the tunnels for the hypocaust? How did I know how you entered the town and how you would escape? How did I know?” she shouted.
Just...the fact that she's so furious about having been given the upper hand (pun not intended, so sorry), about the fact that EUGENIDES has suffered because of the gods, that they gave HER the chance to hurt HIM - and she hates them with so much passion and fury that it suddenly becomes clear how much she loves him!!! So Attolia's refusal to get married before Gen's gods is actually her first confession of love,
thank you for coming to my ted talk

it’s not that “he can do no wrong” but instead, that he absolutely CAN but he almost always chooses not to and that’s what’s so special about his morality
#the entire theme of Gen balancing on a knifes edge the entire story is so well done#he's so powerful#so god touched#that he can easily be me ruthless#or allow himself to be controlled by the hands of the gods#queen's thief
