one of my worst writing sins is abusing my power to create compound words. i cannot write the sentence "The sun shone as bright as honey that afternoon." no. that's boring. "The sun was honey-bright that afternoon" however? yes. that sentence is dope as fuck. i do not care if "honey-bright" is a word in the english dictionary. i do not care if the sentence is grammatically correct. i will not change. i will not correct my erred ways. the laws of the english language are mine.

The way most autism literature describes "literal interpretation" is often not at all similar to how I experience it. Teenage me even thought I couldn't be autistic because I've always been able to learn metaphors easily.
In fact, I love wordplay of all kinds. Teenage me was fascinated to learn all the types of figurative language there are in poetry and literature.
But paperwork and questionnaires are hard, because there's so much they don't state clearly. Or they don't leave room for enough nuance.
"List all the jobs you've had, with start and end dates." What if I don't remember the exact day or month? Is the year enough?
"Have you been suffering from blurred vision?" Well, if I take off my glasses the whole world is blurred, but I'm fairly sure that's not what the intake form at the optometrist is asking.
Or the infamous (and infuriatingly stereotypical) "Would you rather go to a library or a party?" What sort of party? Where? Who's there? I work at a library. Am I currently at the library for work or pleasure? Does it have a good collection?
It's not common figures of speech that confound me. It's ambiguity, in situations that aren't supposed to be ambiguous.

where's that masterpost of quotes that have no right going as hard as they do. I'd like to submit "Protagonism is best left to teens and the insane"

In case anyone finds it helpful because mobility aids are horrifically expensive and inaccessible…
Tumblr media
And for those people who have access to mobility devices but might benefit from a second chair they can abuse without risking expensive damage…
Erik Kondo has made a website, Open Source Innovations, that details plans for DIY wheelchairs. These wheelchairs can be made from common materials like wood, plastic, and pvc. They are lightweight and can be custom fit to the user allowing from the same degree of movement you would get from a custom chair. And they are durable and easily repairable. (he has been stress testing his latest design by dropping it down stairs, dropping it out of a car, launching it across a driveway, and throwing it off a deck). Its 12lbs and I think he said its was in the $200 ish range for parts.
He also is working on cheap, open source, accessible designs for beach chairs, off road chairs, motorized attachments (think smart drive), and so on. Plus he skateboards in his wheelchair. Cool dude, helpful info, pass it on.

I still think that a key function of the way we think of the concepts "adult" and "child" is to separate the human population into "people who deserve autonomy but no protection" and "people who deserve protection but no autonomy" and in the process dehumanize both groups of people. We ignore the fact that all people need both autonomy and protection, and that our society could easily be set up to provide everyone a healthy mix of both.

Somehow he still seems to enjoy basking in the sunlight and the quiet busyness of the birds and butterflies. They say necromancy is a dark art, but whoever reanimated the beast of the black swamp knew what they were doing.

Quick question but I recently joined Inaturalist and was wondering what the etiquette is around observations. Is it rude to suggest IDs if the observation is old or if there are already IDs that you agree with. What about only posting observations and never suggesting IDs or vice versa? I may be creating problems out of thin air but either way, you seem like the sort of person who'd know. Thank you very much if you decide to answer this!
It is not rude!
Adding ids to older observations is usually very much appreciated! There is no time limit and I regularly sort through 5+ year old obs adding ids
If there are already ids you agree with: also not rude! It's actually very useful, more confirming ids help especially in cases of accounts being deleted
Only posting observations or ids is also perfectly fine! There's no wrong way to use the site. There are professionals on here with 1 observation to 300k ids and photographers with 50k obs and no ids. Everyone does it differently and no way of using it is invalid!
And always feel free to hit me up with questions, I'm always down to help!

i was briefly on the train of "pluto is a planet and so is EVERY DWARF PLANET" when i was little, but thinking back, it was definitely just an excuse for me to name all the dwarf planets i knew so ppl would be impressed with me for knowing all the secret ones like ceres and haumea and quaoar.
