It’s kind of sad how much Matt misjudges Elena in the books. It’s not really surprising that Caroline does, because she only views Elena as a competitor, not a friend.

But Matt…if the things he believes about Elena’s character and motivations were true, she would take Damon’s offer in a heartbeat. To be his Queen of Shadows, powerful, eternal, beloved, towering further above the crowd than she ever could achieve or hold as a human? If Elena was as selfish and greedy as Matt makes her out to be, she would have chosen Damon on Caroline’s rooftop.

But Elena’s true character flaw is not greed, but thoughtlessness…a tendency to get carried off by the emotion or personal crisis of the moment and forget that there are consequences and that other people may be affected.

The thing is…it seems to be less that she doesn’t think of THEM and more that she doesn’t expect anyone to be thinking that much of her unless she’s actually standing in front of them. She lives in the now, or, when called for, in the next plan of action. But she doesn’t spend a lot of time dwelling on the long-term or on the inner workings of others. Stefan is, of course, the one glaring exception.

She’d forgotten what she’d asked. Her cheeks were flushing, burning with blood. She felt so light-headed. If only he’d stop looking at her. "Yes, I came here looking for someone," he repeated. Elena couldn’t breathe. He was standing so close, close enough to touch. They were like no eyes she had ever seen, black as midnight, the pupils dilated like a cats. They filled her vision as he leaned toward her, bending his head down to hers. She felt her own eyes half-close losing focus. She felt her head tilt back, her lips part. …I was about to let him kiss me! But that wasn’t the worst thing. For those few minutes, something unbelievable happened. For those few minutes, she had forgotten Stefan. "Perhaps I’ve already found her…Elena."
