Farenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
Chapter 3 Review
Tumblr media
My Rating: ★★★★☆ (4 out of 5 stars)
Summary:
In Chapter 3, Montag’s transformation reaches its climax. After his wife, Mildred, reports him for having books, Captain Beatty forces Montag to burn his own house. Out of defiance and anger, Montag uses the flamethrower on Beatty, killing him. Montag then flees the city, becoming a fugitive. He narrowly escapes the Mechanical Hound and makes his way to the countryside. There, he meets a group of intellectuals led by a man named Granger. These individuals, former professors and lovers of literature, have committed entire books to memory in hopes of preserving their content. As they witness the city being destroyed by bombs, Montag finds a sense of hope and purpose in joining these men to rebuild society.
Characters:
Guy Montag:
I like the awareness he has now, the way he's realizing all the faults in this society, the recklessness of people just for some joy, and the way Beatty almost wanted to die.
Granger:
Granger, the leader of a group of intellectuals who live on the fringes of society, is committed to preserving the knowledge contained in books by memorizing them. Granger is wise, calm, and embodies a sense of resilience and hope for the future. He believes that the knowledge they safeguard will eventually help rebuild society after its inevitable downfall.
Theme:
The theme I have found is no matter how corrupted society gets, there will always, eventually, be a rebellion. The book starts off more as someone's fear for the future, and becomes a hope for further in the future.
Additional Notes:
Seeing what some of the teenagers do for fun, the way they were fully ready and even wanting to kill Montag for just existing, was insane. The way they recklessly drove their car aiming for Montag was terrible to read, amazingly written though, and shows how some teens will do just about anything for a bit of entertainment.

Farenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
Chapter 2 Review
Tumblr media
My Rating: ★★★★☆ (4 out of 5 stars)
Summary:
In Chapter 2, Montag becomes more and more disappointed with his life and society. He begins to question the purpose of his work and the value of the books he burns. His conversations with Clarisse and his wife’s shallow-ness add to his inner conflict. Montag remembers a man named Faber, who was once an English professor he had known, and decided to seek him out for help. He visits Faber, who explains the importance of literature and what it brings to life. Faber agrees to help Montag understand books, and they come up with a plan to challenge the system. This chapter marks the beginning of Montag’s rebellion and his quest for knowledge, books, and meaning.
Characters:
Guy Montag:
Guy Montag is taking action, learning, and realizing his real reality. He isn't a brainwashed drone of a firefighter anymore, and he's taking control of his life.
Good for him.
Faber:
Faber is a cautious, scared character, which makes sense. Before Montag contacted him, he was too scared to take action on his own, but eventually he sees something in Montag and joins through an earpiece to help.
His character is exactly what Montag needed I think.
Theme:
I dont think the theme has changed much from what I thought in chapter one, it shows more of a "take action" approach now, which is good and common among most dystopian books.
Additional Notes:
This book is going in a direction that, for the most part, I could predict. I appreciate that about it, though, and it is an enjoyable book, good to teach in schools.

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
Chapter 1 Review
Tumblr media
My Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3 out of 5 stars)
Summary:
In Chapter 1, we are introduced to Guy Montag, a fireman, in a future where firemen burn books. Montag enjoys his work, but on his way home one day, he meets Clarisse McClellan, a curious and "crazy" seventeen-year-old girl who challenges his perceptions of happiness and society. Their conversations make Montag doubt his role as a fireman and the world he lives in. At home, Montag discovers his wife, Mildred, has overdosed on sleeping pills, prompting an emergency procedure that unsettles him. This chapter essentially displays Montag's beginning of questioning his existence.
Characters:
Guy Montag:
This character seems a lot like my dad, to be honest, just a normal white dude living life. He has a wife, he has a job, and he enjoys his job while also not understanding what real enjoyment is anymore.
When Clarisse comes into the picture and starts to make him doubt, it helped me to enjoy his character a lot more. I could almost feel his distress myself.
Clarisse McClellan:
I enjoyed this character soon as she was introduced. In a world full of fire she is water-like, the way she is described to almost float and flow, her white dress, and her free spirit, are all things that add to her character perfectly.
When Montag met her, and she gave him that doubt, I knew her character was my favourite, especially when she asked the question, "are you happy?" and he realized that he probably wasn't.
Theme:
The theme of this book so far could be a few things, I think. It could be showing the author's fear for the future - the way they treat books and move fully to devices, or it could be a display of how just living and going with society can be damaging - the way Montag isnt really happy even though he is doing everything right according to society.
Additional Notes:
No matter what time you read this book, I think you can apply it to the real world at the moment, which doesn't happen with a lot of books (ex. Harry Potter, The Hunger Games). When it was made, it could have been a simple "this world is advancing and it could be in the wrong way" scenario, but that scenario still applies now, the world is still advancing and it's moving past books in favor of devices, its erasing peoples opinions and stories and power, (Books to devices, art to AI, Tiktok ban even) in favor of mindless entertainment, something that is just enough to keep us occupied - like the society Montag is in right now.
