#100daysofimprov day 13: I don't know Spanish Today I'm trying represent by Orishas (I looped in all the instruments NOTRACKS) for the first time- but I don't know the Spanish yet.. so i improvised the singing. Inspired by seeing @camilo_guitarist do it when I knew him on liberty. Looped with cajon, beat boxing, shaker, clave, the ra ta ta ta sounding thing, acoustic bass guitar, ukulele. @brettdangerdame @its_crystaaaaal (at Deerfield, Plano, Texas)

#100daysofimprov day 11 : yay witness! Yay reward! Yay for hope! Yesterday was all about doing the thing you're meant to do for #nowitnessnoreward But you know what? It's a good feeling to receive witness and reward for your triumphs and moments! And it is a damn good thing to bear witness and offer reward to someone doing something that you treasure. So be someone's witness! Be somebody's reward. It isn't why they are great. It's just that extra little love tap in the last set. @littledavidpequeno I dedicate this improv on this night to you. I bear witness to your beautiful heart, deep mind, unbreakble spirit, and the dive into deep and uncharted waters you've now taken. I offer my love and support and compliments as reward- always. #100daysofimprov : day 11 : #withoutrewardwithoutwitness The last episode of #doctorwho had a theme: #withouthopewithoutwithnesswithoutreward As I ran today I thought about that, and this melody appeared. It's not entirely an improvisation- I worked some of it out before recording. I've been thinking a lot about giving myself without reward and without witness. Sometimes I give my heart and soul at the gig and nobody claps, and I'm tempted to just sing pretty, get my check, and go home. Sometimes when I smile to strangers as I run they ignore me, and I don't want to smile anymore. Sometimes I try to hook cats up with gigs and they don't care... and I just want to keep the gigs. Sometimes I encourage other cats to follow their passions and they are too afraid...and I don't want to encourage anymore. But I realize I'm craving the witness and the reward. But I devoted my life to music to give, not receive. I chose music and music chose me. I play my instruments and I am myself an instrument to share the great calling. To lift this world from petty things into discovery and art. And sometimes that means I do this without reward and without witness. (at Deerfield, Plano, Texas)

#100daysofimprov day 10: #Themes If the song you're playing has an improv section- a good way to start out is to sing the melody of the song- and just change one little thing about it- give it a twist. Also you can find a musical theme and repeat it. So in this video me and my sister @aishaconner start out playing around, and then she actually threw me some specific themes. I picked up on those and repeated them, sometimes giving it a twist- and the structure of he improv was born- the story gained speed and traction. (at Cypress Gardens Apt)

#100daysofimprov day 10: silent chord changes. My mouth is improvising a whistle melody, but my brain is imagining and improvising a whole band playing chord changes and a texture. The more music you hear, experience, study, and imagine--- the more your ear will hear things and create possibilities in your brain. No matter if you think of yourself a singer, guitar player, drummer, whatever- your first instrument is your ear. Your imagination. (at 6th Street, Austin, TX)

Day 9 of #100daysofimprov : discomfort I've recently begun playing around with @littledavidpequeno ukulele for the first time. I enjoy improvising when I'm not quite comfortable with some aspect of what's going on. Could be the song, the arrangement, the key, the beat pattern, the other cats. In this case it's the ukulele. What's nice is that it brings out new colors and thoughts through that discomfort. And I get to play and discover what I feel works and what doesn't in a new texture. Singers especially like to only sing or riff or improvise when they feel comfortable, but through the years their art never takes shape because they haven't discovered what it is to be a musician and an artist. Improv day 7 of #100daysofimprov : jumping In. I was at a master class with Janice seagull and she said she loves to jump into an improvisation sometimes having no idea what was going to be played. Some of the instrumentalists in the room were a bit surprised as the whole point of our education was to know what was going on in he music, but I think it's cool she sometimes just jumps in with only her ear as a guide. As such I asked @brettdangerdame to not tell me what he was going to play as I sang over it. I just jumped right in. Instead of just playing changes, Brett chose to go for some melodies of his own- so I tried to respond to his phrases, I scrubbed some phrases- that's the ball game. I love just jumping in on the unknown. It takes an openness and trust to go there, and I've always loved that about Brett dame.
