Peter Millard
Tumblr media
Peter Millard is not only one of our animation tutors at Kingston, he also a practitioner. Peter Millard is an Animation filmmaker from the Malvern Hills currently based in London.
Millard spoke about how he was never really interested in Art in the beginning, yet. ended up at the Royal Collage of Art (RCA) to study Animation at MA.
Some of the things I wrote down:
- Had a job, working In the Natural History Museum, working a 0 hour contract which gave him the flexibility to make work. He advised us to take risks and just keep making work.
It was very interesting having Peter Millard to speak, as we got to see more of him and his work.

Charlotte Ager and Ollie Macdonald Oulds
Tumblr media
We then had an informal talk with Ollie Macdonald Oulds and Charlotte Ager, two ex Kingston student, who spoke about what they have been up too since leaving.
Macdonald Oulds works at the Royal Drawing School, as well as part time in a book shop. He spoke fondly of working at the book shop, and showed us on the projector a piece of scenery (near the bookshop) that he draws over and over again – giving me the challenge of drawing familiar things over and over again, especially when they aren’t there. Ager spoke about drawing: ‘There isn’t a style, it’s a voice and your voice gets stronger with drawing’.
The photos below are photographs from their sketchbooks, the drawings that stuck out to me the most.

Jonny Hannah
On the 12th October, Illustrator Jonny Hannah came in to do a 1 day workshop with the first years at Kingston. We were all given a word, I was given ‘Paint’, and had to produce an A3 response to the word. In the review I was given positive feedback to the outcome to my word by Hannah. I then further reached out to him on instagram, tagging him in the work I had produced through the day, not just the final outcome.

Unfortunately, I wasn't there for the Johnny Hannah talk but I got notes and asked my friends about it. I found it interesting how he likes to work fast: ‘I like working quickly, if I have too much time to do something, Ill change my mind half way through”. We experienced working fast within the workshop and I really liked working that way as I didn't get bored, this is something to think about when producing my next piece of work. Other things he mentioned was how he primarily uses printmaking and collage and has gone off digital art as its too flat for his practise. His work is very bright and colourful, I wish I could of asked where he gets inspiration for the patterns and colours, in his work, from as they are very eye-catching.

Laura Fitton
Tumblr media
“Collaging your perception of the world”
SUMMARY/ RESPONSE; On the 15th October we had Laura Fritton, a reportage artist, come in and give us a talk about her journey of becoming an illustrator. Fritton spoke about different techniques and places she likes to draw; How to give yourself an artificial reason for drawing when on location and how drawing at performances (e.g. drag performances) can be freeing, as they are in the dark so you aren’t worrying about the perfect drawing.
QUESTIONS; A lot of the questions were about her residency and how they work, which was very interesting.

JOEY YU TALK
Tumblr media
SUMMARY/ RESPONSE: On the 1st October, the illustration course was lucky enough to have Joey Yu come speak for us about her practise as an illustrator. She started by speaking about her inspirations; colour, travelling and film (particularly when using them to learn about perspectives). Yu then went on to speak about life after university and manifesting the work you want. She spoke about how she was interested in the music industry so after her friend if she could draw his band as they perform, someone saw her draw and invited her to draw at a festival. She talked about knowing your worth and, as a woman, not saying sorry. Yu spoke about how in the first year of university she made nothing that looks like what she makes now and how focusing on trying to find a style will lead you to a destination shorter than where you could actually be. Being in first year it was really nice hearing that.
QUESTIONS: Question1; Is all your reportage done on location or later? A; A mixture, but something has to be done on location.
The photo above I chose as I thought it represented the talk well. It is of a concert, drawn with inspiring colours and detail.
