Welcome to Blue Rock Farm's Rocky and Kentucky Mountain Horses! Tucked away in rural southwest Nova Scotia, Blue Rock Farm has been quietly breeding gaited Mountain Horses since 2003, successfully producing horses of size, substance, terrific temperament and super smooth saddle gait for the discerning equestrian. Rocky and Kentucky Mountain horses are new to the Maritimes, and a rare breed indeed, with only about 19,000 Rockies registered world wide to date. The horse world's best kept secret, these horses are super easy keepers, with people loving personalities, beautiful good looks and a gait that makes you feel like you are floating on air. Extremely versatile, Rocky and Kentucky Mountain horses compete in many disciplines - endurance and competitive trail, dressage, sports like barrel racing and pole bending, and are also easily trained to cart. In addition to their signature gait, the "rack", Mountain horses also W/T/C with the best of them. Take a moment to browse through our site to learn more about the breed, see pictures of our horses, video clips of gait, and visit our sales page - we might just have the horse you've been dreaming about!. HELLO FINN! Now that we are retired Gerald and I are reigniting our spontaneity and made an unscheduled trip to visit our alumni Finn (Poet’s Silver Finish). Hasn’t changed a bit and loved on both Gerald and I - nuzzled my toes and gave me a big neck hug! I was LONG overdue for some good horse lovin’! 😍🐴💖

PRINCE AND ALLIE.....found some pics of alumni Prince and Allie at their home in Cape Breton. Have always thought it was amazing that altho they had never met, when they ended up together here in Cape Breton they instantly bonded and have been thick as thieves ever since. How do they know they are half siblings? Smell? One of life’s great mysteries lol!

THE SCIENCE OF GAIT......thought this chart might be of interest when wondering why some horses are more well gaited than others. The above Punnet square shows outcomes when breeding “A” horses (carry one or two copies of the A or gait gene) to other A horses or “C” horses (non gaited horses). Animal Genetics Lab in Florida will test tail hair to determine your horses’ genetic profile for this trait. The Gaited Morgan folks have a great site explaining it further found here https://gaitedmorgans.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Learn-about-horses-natural-gaits.pdf?4c466c&4c466c

NEW MOM.....had to laugh at this pic from the Rocky Mountain Facebook page of first time Mom and her newborn foal. Great capture of the mare’s expression as her newborn foal nurses, and I betcha there’s not a Mom out there, horse OR human, that can’t relate!
