Happy (189th) birthday to Hijikata Toshizou! Last month was spent chasing his back by visiting several places related to the Shinsengumi in Japan (Kyoto, Itabashi (Tokyo), Aizu...) and going to see Musical Hakuouki Shinkai - Hijikata Toshizou hen in person.

Today, I'm still riding that high and going through the memories. Hakuouki's Hijikata Toshizou has become a very important character to me, but I do not forget the history he was based on.

I redrew this from one of the Shinkai Saitou Hajime hen bromides.

All the shows are over, and during the curtain call, Ruri mentioned how she was sad that this meant the end for her in HakuMyu. Kubota then gave her a reply that made the entire venue go "awww". As they walked off stage after 4 standing ovations, they hugged again. They really work well together.

I've wanted to draw the bloodlust scene for a while, but most of the visuals are quite on the nose... and that's not necessarily what I wanted to focus on. There's the emotional turmoil that Hijikata goes through, the pain and anguish of fighting the monster he's turning into, the warmth, gentleness and reassurance that Chizuru gives him despite that...

When watching Shinkai Hijikata hen, I was captivated by their hands... and it clicked. He's holding her very lightly, but she's ensuring him that it is okay. Eventually, the walls that still exist between them, fall away. Not just verbally, but also through their actions. From that moment, she truly stands by his side, as he picks up the flag of sincerity as commander of the Shinsengumi and heads towards the final battle.

These are my own (not very high quality) scans from the art book that comes with the Ten'un no Shou box. These illustrations were originally serialized in the magazine Dengeki Girl's Style. (My fav from this series is Sannan-san. Really stunning.)
