You know the best thing about Souji and cats?

You can spin it one way and headcanon that he loves cat, tries not to let on, secretly keeps them in his room and rescues them, nurses them to health. Feeds them when no one is looking. Secretly is actively pursuing cat time.

OR

You can headcanon that he doesn't try to do anything. Cats just follow him. Show him their babies. As if they register he is one of their own kind, they seek him out and give him gifts. Rub on his legs while he is trying to patrol. Invite themselves into his room. By trying to be indifferent, he has won their affection all the more. He is the cat and human liaison and he has no idea why. Even worse that they are winning him over.

OR

You can be completely heartwarming about it and say that cats sense all of the pain that has happened to him, therefore they want to be near him just as a comfort. It isn't simply because he has a warm lap and they always receive a good scratch. They want to lend him as much healing as they can. He is the human they have decided to protect.

OR

You could say cats have always offered him companionship, even when humans have failed him. Cats don't care if you're an orphan or piteous. They don't measure a man by the right and wrong he does. They accept him no matter what and he had them as friends even longer than he has loved Kondou-san.

Whatever the reasons, this man seriously loves cats and they clearly love him in return.
