Blood Disco: Dirk Wears White Socks
Scott Redford, 30 sec, Australia, 2004. Digital Video
Scott Redford’s visually rampant fist-in-mouth and Egyptian eye images riff on the early surrealist films of Luis Buñuel, via a queer punk aesthetic, in this pop-savvy work.
Biography - Scott Redford
Born 1962, lives and works in Brisbane.
Redford is an artist and curator. He has exhibited nationally since 1983 and internationally since 1997. In 2001-03 Redford was the recipient of an Australia Council Residency at the Kunstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin. Major exhibitions he has participated in include the 1993 and 1999 Australian Perspectas at the Art Gallery of New South Wales; the 1996 Adelaide Biennale of Australian Art at Art Gallery of South Australia; Photographica Australis Taipei Art Museum, Taiwan and Asian tour; and Fieldwork: Australian Art 1968-2002, National Gallery of Victoria, 2002.
Artist Statement - Scott Redford
'My recent work has consistently sought to avoid the usual deployment of the high/low culture divide when thinking about popular culture. I aim to adopt a strategy of immersion rather than critique. We are participants rather than spectators. The lineage for my video work, paintings, photography, pornography and objects comes directly from the influence of the writings of the ’80s Australian Popists, whose leader was Paul Taylor. However, I come from Queensland's Gold Coast. To me, the much-maligned Surfers Paradise becomes a site where anything is possible: an eternal present where art can voice its relevance within and alongside contemporary culture.'
