“Well, perhaps not a new reality.” Thor shrugged. “But I am no stranger to loss. I’m sorry that you aren’t either.”

"Loss is part of life.” The response is automatic. Clarice knows it well. It causes her to just shake her head. “It’s not fun though, is it?”

lhunter​:

“fair enough,” hunter nodded in understanding, despite his disappointment at her lack of interest. he moved to retrieve his discarded shirt from the chair he had left it on, “now, can i help you with something else?”

"I feel shitty saying this after that whole conversation, but no. I was waiting for someone.”

“Oh, trust me, it’s more sad than scandalous. I’m talking waking up in alleyways with no idea how I got there in the first place.” It would be much more fun if it was beds Steven was waking up in, though. Not that he’d ever want that. He was perfectly content with what he had going with Layla at the moment. “Are other realities and other timelines really that far off? Maybe it’s related?”

"What, are you an alcoholic?” She asks point blank. That would be the most obvious reason for his predicaments. “Maybe? Maybe not? We didn’t even know about the multiverse in my reality. At least, I didn’t and I don’t think my friends did.”

“Blink..” Rachel recognized that name, remembering the time Kurt had to draw with her during their fight at the Quarry. She thought that maybe her Clarice was doing some work with S.W.O.R.D. now, but she didn’t know the other mutant well enough to remember for sure. She did know that this Clarice was not the one from her own reality. She could sense it in the other woman’s thoughts, memories of a mutant underground and another woman with green hair who looked strikingly similar to Lorna. She had to step back for a second from how disoriented she got as she furrowed her brows at Clarice. “You’re not supposed to be here, are you? In this reality. That’s why you feel lost.”

Clarice nods once. “I feel like that’s pretty obvious. I’m basically a walking, talking I’m not from here sign at this point.” She assumes she has a variant — that’s what they’re called, right? — but doesn’t have any desire to see her or find out what she’s up to. What if it’s better? What if it’s worse? Clarice isn’t sure what she’d do with revelations on either side. She likes her life. She likes being with John, being with the Underground. There’s a purpose that she clings to. Now, everything has been shaken. “You think you can help me figure out what the hell is going on?”

“no, uh—” he lets out a slight laugh, “it’s kind of a long story, but this is actually my second time back. think it’s gonna be for a quite a bit longer though. whatever that means.”

“Were either of these times wiling, or are you just getting jerked around?”

“Do you enjoy talkin’ to walls? Walls with attitude and a god complex.” 

“I’ve talked to walls before. I think I can handle myself. Or, at least, figure out where to go from there.”

Kate winces. She did know someone for that, but the pair might just make things worse. “There’s a lot of that going around,” she admits. “We’re trying to figure it out.” Who is we exactly? Couldn’t say. But someone. 

“Okay, well, who is the we in the we’re trying to figure it out? Maybe I can talk to them.”

lhunter​:

hunter nods, understanding very quickly that she doesn’t trust him in the slightest. fair enough. “don’t quite know where i stand at the moment if i’m honest. everything’s been shite as of late.”

“This reality is a mess.” She sighs, one hand running through violet strands of hair. “Do you handle mutant affairs at all?”

“Okay, sorry. That was probably rude.” Rachel didn’t feel that bad, but still. This woman seemed pretty lost, and she could understand that feeling. “What’s your name?”

An apology isn’t what Clarice is expecting and it catches her by surprise. “Blink.” She pauses. “Clarice. My name’s Clarice.”

“you know, as weird as it sounds, i know the feeling,” peter smiled giving her a half-wave hello, “peter. nice to meet you.”

“You’re not from around here either?” It’s nice to meet someone in a similar position, even if he’s still virtually a stranger. “Clarice.” She nods once. “How long since you got dumped in this place?”

lhunter​:

“sounds like you’re in need of some allies here then,” hunter offered a hand for her to shake, “lance hunter. special agent and whatnot—”

The words special agent instantly sets Clarice on edge. It makes her think of Agent Turner and everything Jace had put the Underground through. There's a whole beat before she reaches out to shake his hand in return. “Blink.” No first or last name. They’re not there. “What’s the whatnot here?”

“You get used to being alone. But it’s a shock when you’re not expecting it.”

Clarice gets being alone. Wasn’t she running on the own before the Underground had swooped in and saved her? She had repaid her debts a hundred times over by now. The mutant shakes her head. “I have people to get back to. They need me.” And Clarice needs them, too. “I can’t just up and disappear like this.”

“Oh no no, don’ lump me in wit’ them. You want boy-scout, head to toe in latex condom, I can get you Summer’s number. I like the movement in these chaps.” 

The name rings a bell. “Scott Summers. He leads the X-Men, right? That’s who I need to talk to.” Not some Southern smart ass.

“Lucky for you, you’ve come to the right person.” Stephen felt like he was basically an expert on the Multiverse now after everything he’d been through with Wanda and America. Fighting several of your own variants had to count for something. “Stephen Strange.” Holding his hand out to shake, the sorcerer raised a brow at the woman. “When did this happen?”

“Finally.” Everyone else she has spoken with had been a complete dead end. Clarice offers a hand in return, shaking his once. “Clarice Fong. I’d say about a week ago? I tried the mutants first and that was a bust.”

“I care.” Kate tried for a smile, but it felt awkward when she pulled it. “Can’t promise you I have a lick of sense when it comes to the happenings around here, but there’s probably someone I know who can help.” 

“Right. The whole I’m focused on tamales thing really showed that.” Her headache is building, and the woman isn’t helping. “I’m from another reality and I just showed up here. You know someone for a problem like that?”

lhunter​:

“christ, don’t answer any quicker,” hunter shook his head, a slight flush creeping up his neck in embarassment.

“In all honesty, I thought that was an appropriate speed. Not too fast, not too slow. More of a I don’t know why you’re offering and I’m not playing along kind of thing.”

“Awesome, thanks for the heads-up. Guess I shouldn’t expect anything else, huh?”
