reguri AU where Red and Green were childhood friends (surprise, surprise) but they had a falling out and stopped being friends in high school

Now they're in college. Red's going to a community college to get his gens out of the way (super smart) and Green went off to some four year a few cities away from their hometown.

The thing is, Red's been lying to his mother for the past few years telling her that he and Green are still friends. She's worried about his social life because Red is a loner, anti-social, introverted, etc. And he likes it that way, but she wants him to have friends.

She asks him stuff like, "So how's Green been?" and Red just comes up with some bullshit because he doesn't want to tell his mother that they stopped being friends years ago and he has no clue what Green's up to.

But one week, she gets tired of the excuses about Green not being able to come over for dinner or for study parties or whatever. She puts her foot down! "Red, I'm sure if we give Green enough time in advance, he can come spend one evening with us. Tell him to come over this Saturday, and I won't take no for an answer!"

Ruh roh, Red thinks, because now he has to bring Green here. (He can't pay someone to pretend to be Green or whatever sitcom shenanigan you're thinking of. this man is in college; he's BROKE.)

So! Red writes a letter. To Green. To come over for dinner. His first letter doesn't reach Green. it reaches his roommate, who agrees to help Red in his quest to get Green to come over for dinner.

With the help of Gold, Red and Green meet up for the first time since their falling out. Red gets him appraised of the situation, but Green has his reservations considering their huge falling out before.

But it's just for one night. They just have to pretend to be BFF's to convince his mother and then it'll be over.

"But it won't be," Green says. "She'll ask me over again and again."

But with Green going to school out of town, Red makes the case that he won't be available to respond to his mother's every call. It'll be fine; she just needs to see him once.

And usually, Green would say no to such a blatant, horrible plan. But he doesn't. He hasn't seen Red in five years. And...whatever, fine. He'll do this.

So they spend the week catching up with each other awkwardly dancing around the subject of their falling out. And they still have a lot in common and get along well despite that. But Green states his boundaries and says that after this, he doesn't want to talk to Red again, which makes Red sad. 🥺

But it's the night of the dinner, and they've practiced and they're ready to play pretend. HOW WILL IT GO? Will they successfully convince Red's mother? Will there be cooky shenanigans and wacky situations? Will they EVER breach the subject of their big fight?

I dunno. Find out in 2028!
