My ongoing Warhammer projects
54 posts
BLAST TEMPLATES FTW!Hello, and welcome to my Warhammer blog! Here, I will be posting images of my various ongoing projects. This is mostly for my own benefit, but if you like what you see, I invite you to stick around.I've been playing Orks and Guard since the 4th edition, so at this point my armies are relics of times when their units and composition actually made sense. Still, I continue on, set in my ways no matter how "off the meta" they may be now.I'm a little better known as the creator of the Daily MtG Flavor Text blog, so if you're into Magic: the Gathering, it might be worth your while to check it out!

Another project: done!
This is my "conscripted" Sentinel squad of various industrial Sentinels with Autocannons slapped onto the side. There's a lifter, a demolisher, and a snowblower. I just count them all as Sentinel close-combat weapons.
What should be very obvious from this is that I have no idea how a forklift works or what one looks like by memory.

It's not every day I have my Valhallans out of their case, so I figured I'd take a quick picture. This is roughly half of my Valhallan infantry; six of my 10 squads. Not pictured is their substantial armored division.
Of course, every model in the army has been documented on this blog somewhere. I never intended this army to get as big as it has, but somehow it kept growing as I came up with new ideas!

Well it took me almost three months, but I've finally finished my squad of Valhallan Ogryns! I figured since everyone seems to be playing marines these days, I'd better have some heavy infantry of my own.
At least on paper, Ogryns seem to be a pretty solid unit. Those Ripper Guns are nothing to scoff at! I just wish they didn't take up 3(!) transport slots each. I might not be able to take the entire squad anywhere at once.
But hey, that's another huge project done! I have a couple more lined up, so we'll see if I can get around to them in good time.

Small update today as I continue to work on my Ogryns. I made a little Pulverizer Cannon for what is now my Valhallan Rogal Dorn tank. In case you missed it earlier, this started out simply as a massive Leman Russ but then the Dorn came into existence and the new rules seemed to fit it better.
My only regret is that I glued the twin Battlecannons into place. If the rules for the Dorn existed when I made this tank, I definitely would have made the turret weapons interchangeable. Oh well.

Looks like my next major project is well underway. I don't think I've ever done this much green stuff sculpting at once, and I hope I never need to again! These are the Ogryns for my Valhallan Guard army. Naturally they needed masks to match the rest of the army, and they needed jackets to keep warm.
I knew it would be an ordeal to make these, but it took weeks of sculpting layer upon layer and piece by piece to get them to this point! After all, it's not like I could simply build them and then give them their parkas over top in their given poses. No! Almost everything had to be done separately and then pieced together after the fact, with their masks done last. But in the end I'm quite proud of how they turned out, so I suppose it was worth it.
Now to start painting.

Hey folks, here she is! Right from 1998, it's the Gamesday promo Lady Commissar model. Now outfitted to match my Mordian guard army, much of which is (surprisingly) even older.
Speaking of being old, oooooh boy, am I finding it more difficult to paint the finer details these days! I think I say this every time I paint a random model for my Mordians, but I feel like this might be the final one. At least I don't need to paint pupils (or lipstick) on my Orks or Valhallans! I mean, I guess I could give the Orks lipstick if I wanted. Hmmmmm.
Anyway, I have a couple projects that I've been chipping away at for my Valhallans, so stay tuned for that. It's fun to have things to work on again!

Hey everyone, small update today.
First of all, here's a cool addition to my collection: the Lady Commissar model which I believe was an old Game Day promo from 20 years ago. I've always sort of planned to pick one up, but they've never been super easy to find at a decent price and I figured now was about time to get it done. She will be painted up nicely to go with my Mordian army!
Second, I actually have a handful of projects on the go for my Valhallans. I just need to find some "Green Stuff" modeling putty since apparently they don't sell it at GW (sorry, at 'Warhammer') any more. Expect more images in the foreseeable future!
So like, maybe by next year at the speed I do things.

Finally, to finish off my photographic archiving of my entire Necron army, we have the Lords.
First, there's the aforementioned Command Barge. It's a cool piece, I like that the Lord actually fits on top and can be removed.
And lastly, there's the group-shot of my command units. A couple are old metal models, and the one on the right is Trazyn the Infinite. It's probably impossible to use in a game, but I'm quite proud of the original Lord model that I posed to stand on a Monolith crystal. It's a nice centerpiece!
With that, I've once again catalogued my entire collection! At least, my entire collection I can actually use. I don't know what's next for my Warhammer hobby. I have some more Necron Warriors kicking around that I could build, and a handful of other units that haven't even been cut out of the sprues. I guess that friend of mine had some plans for the future of this army before he decided to sell it. I also wouldn't mind building some more Orks at some point.
Anyway, that's all for now. Thanks for looking!

Yeah, you aren't the first person to comment on how "unique" they look. I don't know how my friend and I came up with red and gold, but we stuck to it and I'm actually really happy with the overall look of the army now.
If I had started this army from scratch as my own though, I would have tried to make them ceramic. In the old 4th Edition codex there was a cool little section of ceramic Necrons, and that would have been my artistic project.

Hey folks, it's been a while! I've finally finished my latest Necron project, so I present to you today my vehicle master post!
First up, we have the Ghost Arcs. This is an infantry-heavy army, so it makes sense to have a couple of these floating around. They look really cool in tandem with the rest of the army, but I gotta say this: I absolutely LOATHE painting these things. It is an awful experience, hopefully I never need to again. In case you missed it in a previous post, this army originally belonged to a friend of mine and he commissioned me to paint it all for him. At least back then I was getting paid for it! Left to my own devices, it takes me a loooong time to muscle through painting these arcs.
Which transitions nicely into the next vehicle: the Doomsday Arc. Again, an awesome vehicle! But it took me like a year to paint it. All those "ribs" are the worst. As a side note, I would have made a cool custom base for this one like I did for the Ghost Arcs (those aren't the bases they come with), but I didn't have any spares. So it got a smaller, but still custom, base instead.
Up next there's a couple squadrons of Tomb Blades. Neat little speeders, but I'm not overly familiar with what they do. They fire a lot of shots, if I recall correctly.
The second-last picture is the Annihilation Barge, which of course I made completely modular with its optional pieces so it can become a Command Barge at any time. But that has to wait until my next post!
And finally, we have the ever iconic Monolith. My mind is perpetually stuck in 4th Edition, so naturally I have three of these. Unfortunately I don't think I can get them all in one image, but they're all identical so you can copy and paste this one a couple times for the same effect. These were also a pain to paint, but for a different reason. They're just so darn big and full of open, flat surfaces. Worth it, though. Again, they look sweet on the tabletop.
With this post I've documented almost my entire Necron army. Just a handful or Lords next, should be up later today. Thanks for looking!

Hah, well thank you very much, I’m honored! Honestly, even compared to all my wild Ork tank conversions, my Valhallan tanks are probably the ones I’m most proud of. I’m happy that people like them!

Check it out! As voted by my peers, my tank (affectionately nicknamed "Rusty") won the Best Painted award!
We played two tank battles today, it was a good time. It's such a different experience playing with such a low model count on each team (though our destroyed tanks "respawned" every turn) coupled with such high-powered weapons! Very fun though. I played the Vanquisher for the first battle, but I switched it into a Demolisher (pictured) for the second one. Sitting back and shooting every turn was fun, but I wanted to try charging forward into close range.
The next tank battle is in November I think, so I'll have to start planning out what I want to bring. Maybe an Ork tank for something completely different.

For the first time literally in years, I'm going to an event at my not-so-local GW tomorrow! They're having a big tank battle for which everyone brings a (not super-heavy) tank, so I'm gonna try out my Leman Russ Vanquisher build above. Typically I'm not a big fan of the Vanquisher, but I feel like if it shines anywhere it's gotta be in a dedicated tank battle!

This may be shocking, but I am actually still working on some Warhammer projects a little at a time. Most recently, I made some small modifications to my “super-Leman Russ” because I realized that it was a great model to use to represent the new (larger) Rogal Dorn tank! I carved up a Space Marine Assault Cannon and put it in the hull (it’s a Castigator Gatling Cannon now), and I pieced together a Heavy Stubber out of bits and stuck it on top. It has a much more impressive stat line now!
I’m also slowly painting a Necron Doomsday Arc, but to be honest I do not like painting Necron vehicles so progress is taking a while. When I’m done, I’ll get some more pictures up.

I’ve paid my “nerd tax” and picked up the new Guard codex that I might use once or twice before the next one comes out. Now for the fun of going through my old army list and figuring out all the new points costs! What still works? What has been reduced to unplayable trash? What new models do they want me to buy? Who knows?
The dice are cool, but I’m disappointed they don’t come in their own resealable box like the Ork dice did. Not sure what I’ll do with them now.

Hey folks, are you ready for some Necrons?
First up, we have 40 warriors. I think there are like 25 more in my cases, but they’re all pretty similar and I don’t know how many more I could fit in frame. I think I mentioned a while back that I started playing in 4th edition, and back then this is how Necrons were played! Swarms of warriors.
As a side note, a lot of these were actually from yet another friend of mine who played Necrons and later got out of the hobby. He played much earlier than the friend who I painted these for though, so if you see any old metal models they’re likely from him. What is it with my friends and Necrons?
Next we have my two small squads of Immortals. One squad of new models, and the other of old metal models. I understand why they stopped making the glowey green bits, but they really do add a lot to the army as a whole. And as a bonus, I can cut up the extra sprue to make crystals for their bases.
Third, there are some of the newer elite models. I actually had to look these up just now, since I’m still not all that familiar with the modern codex. Lichguard and Deathmarks is what they are.
Then there’s the obligatory squad of Destroyers and a couple Heavy Destroyers for extra firepower. Again, these are classic models from back when I played a lot more and every Necron army looked the same. But hey, they get the job done. I remember having a tough time fitting the glowey rods into the guns of the Heavy Destroyers. They’re made of metal and didn’t seem to be sized quite right.
Finally, there’s the old Spyder and its compliment of Scarabs. The rules have changed for this thing, so I added the little guns on top so that it sort of matched. The whole body is metal, it’s a heavy model.
That pretty much does it for the infantry of the army, although I do have some unpainted models still to complete. Whenever I get around to it, my next post will be about the hovering vehicles and jetbikes.
As always, I love to hear what you think about these or any other models in my armies!

Guess who just bought an entire army of Necrons? And a sizable one at that.
Kind of an interesting story, actually. This is an army I painted myself for a friend of mine who is partially colorblind. He didn’t want to try painting it himself, so the two of us thought up a color scheme and he commissioned me to paint his entire army.
He did get a lot of use out of it, but then the pandemic happened and new rules came out and eventually he “fell out of love” with how the Necrons played. He planned to sell them all, and since I was the one who built and painted them I said I’d just buy the lot myself. So hey, I have another army now.
The old-school Necron Lord pictured above was a birthday present or a Christmas present or something. Not really meant to be used, but it does make a cool centerpiece.
I’ll post pictures of the rest of the army when I find time. Infantry, tanks, there’s a lot. Trust me, I painted it. There are even a few new things I didn’t know he had (and are therefore un-assembled/painted), so it looks like after a hiatus of 2-3 years I’m finally back at working on Warhammer!
