notasoldierseverin:
Severin felt old. Everything ached, every limb weak, as if he had been dragged under a bus through the streets. The sunlight streaming through the blinds was an assault of its own, and even the weight of Cerberus leaping up onto the sofa beside him hurt. Still; he was seeking the affection Sebastian refused to dish out, and Severin could never say no to curling up beside something living, breathing, warm.
The last thing Severin needed was a lecture; he knew how he looked.Ā ā€œAinā€™t done anythingĀ to myself, mā€™just fuckinā€™ā€¦ tired. And you can leave my dog alone, he donā€™t need training up. Heā€™s perfect just the way he is, ainā€™t you Cerb?ā€
He leaned down to litter kisses over the back of his head, pulling away with a grimace as Cerberus got excitable. He didnā€™t have the energy for that, sitting back to nudge him off the sofa. He sat up a little straighter, gaze landing on the book at precisely the same time as Sebastian. He was smirking again without meaning to, a strange sense of leverage in the air.Ā
ā€œDunno. Fell out of your pocket, I ainā€™t touched it.ā€ Severin insisted with a smirk.Ā ā€œWhat is it?ā€
Sebastian shook his head in disbelief,Ā ā€œYouā€™re not tired, youā€™re coming down off something, arenā€™t you? Jesus, Sev, and you wanna lecture me on my drinking? You donā€™t wanna go down that road, kiddo, it doesnā€™t end well.ā€ He looked over at the dog, frowning,Ā ā€œHeā€™d be more perfect if he wasnā€™t a thorn in my fucking side.ā€
He looked back at Severin, nose scrunching angrily, ā€œIt fell out of my pocket onto the coffee table, open, did it?ā€ He shook his head, not buying that for a moment, holding the book even closer, ā€œItā€™s nothing! Just a notebook. Itā€™s stupid, really, and none of your bloody business either.ā€
He very much wanted to leave, but he somehow couldnā€™t bring himself to. He couldnā€™t leave knowing that Severin had read his writing journal, especially not when he had such an insistently smug look on his face, as though heā€™d just been handed the keys to get to Sebastian and was planning on using them indiscriminately. ā€œYou donā€™t tell anyone about this, got it?ā€ he growled, ā€œJust forget about it.ā€

Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  āā€“ Of course, business like mine doesnā€™t stop when Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Iā€™m in my home, threat is EVER PRESENT and I need Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  someone who can handle that? Are you worried youā€™re Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  not capable enough?āž
His question was clearly goading, there was no attempt to hide that but he meant it all the same. If Sebastian felt he wasnā€™t up to the task then heā€™d rather than man say so than attempt to juggle his vices and his work, it was obvious which was the most important of the two.
Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  āā€“ Hard to say, some days more often than others. Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Mostly Iā€™ll need you there when Iā€™m meeting clients Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  face to face, can never be sure theyā€™re not up to Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  something and youā€™re a CRACKSHOT from what Iā€™ve Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  heard. Fast enough and accurate enough to put down Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  anyone causing me trouble.āž
That would only be part of his job, of course. Their home life would be something more EXPERIMENTAL, likely for both of them. Jim couldnā€™t be sure the theyā€™d even get along in close proximity for extended amounts of time, the man could very well irk him to no end but only time would tell. The first real test would be whether Sebastian could deal with one of his foul moods, if he could navigate that, then he just might just survive and perhaps even THRIVE with enough practice.
A look of surprise crossed his expression for just a moment at the talk of agreeing on things, as though it anything could be debated with him. Curiosity, however, got the better of him and he gave the sniper a chance to have his say.
Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  āā€“ And what might those THINGS be?āž
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ā  ā€œIā€™m capable.ā€ Sebastian growled back,Ā ā€œThatā€™s not the issue here. A man canā€™t spend his whole life at work, I need down time or Iā€™ll burn out.ā€
He calmed a little at the praise, his chest puffing out just slightly. He always had been something of a vain man, and compliments proved to be the best way to butter him up. He was somewhat aware of that weakness, he wasnā€™t exactly a raging narcissist, but he knew he was the best, and hearing it just validated him, ā€œOf course I am. My accuracy was the highest in my unit, and Iā€™ve only improved since then. Iā€™ve never missed a shot for you, boss.ā€
He sighed, running a hand through his messy blonde hair, ā€œScheduled days off, where you find a replacement for me. A couple of days a month, no call-ins. Itā€™ll improve my productivity, and you get me out of your hair for a while. Itā€™s beneficial to both of us.ā€ He tilted his head, ā€œAnything you ought to warn me about before I move in with you? I guess youā€™ve seen everything wrong with me already, peeking through my room.ā€

notasoldierseverin:
It was almost disappointing to see Sebastian leave. He had been spoiling for a fight by then, riled up to the point of no return, and his selfish fucking brother had to leave. They had inherited the very worst their Father had to offer; Sebastian had landed himself with quick fists, and Severin a sharp tongue. It was impossible to say which was worse.Ā
By morning, Severin was calm again. It was over, though he had one hell of a comedown to contend with; Sebastian wasnā€™t the only one with a vice. He had barely moved from his spot on the sofa all morning, sheets dragged from the bedroom to form a makeshift nest. In between the usual waves of crippling nausea and self loathing, Severin had kept busy. His brotherā€™s jacket was fifty quid lighter, and a little book heā€™d found inside lay open on the coffee table.Ā
The last person Severin had expected to find at the door was his brother. He had privately been hoping heā€™d slink off and disappear for a few weeks until every nasty jab had faded in his memory. No such luck. After checking to be sure he had sobered up, Severin opened the door with a blank face, stepping back to let him inside. Cerb skittered around the corner to collide with Sebastianā€™s shins, though Severin was already collapsing back onto the sofa by then, too exhausted to care.Ā
ā€œShut the door behind you, yeah?ā€ He called, an echo of the last night.Ā ā€œDonā€™t want him getting out, the daft bastard. Wouldnā€™t last two minutes.ā€
Ā Ā  Sebastian had to come back. Needed to. Not because of any particular amount of regret, or longing to see his brother. No...
The little bastard had his wallet.
He couldnā€™t remember the night before as clearly as a stone cold sober man might, but he knew enough. The basics. And he was completely and utterly convinced that he had been in the right. From what he could recall, his brother had shunned him, shouted at him, and reminded him just why he loathed the Morans. And he, being the goddamn saint he was, somehow managed to get out of there before punching the little prick to a pulp.
And so it had done nothing for his mood when he realised he was missing quite a sizeable chunk of his belongings, left behind in his jacket pocket.
When Severin opened the door, Sebastian grunted out a half-hearted greeting, glaring at the dog and nudging it out of the way with his foot as he shut the door behind him, flinching as Severin ordered him to close it, though god knew why. ā€œShould train your mutt up then.ā€ he mumbled spitefully, wandering into the room.
ā€œAnd what have you gone and done to yourself?ā€ he raised a brow, ā€œYou look ill. I thought you said you had everything under control.ā€ If the kid was a little junky, that was just more to worry about. He was annoyed at him, angry, even, but strangely he still felt some amount of responsibility for his little brother. He made a mental note to bring sour worms and lucozade next time. Just in case.
ā€œI came to get the crap I left here last night.ā€ he grumbled, making a beeline for his jacket and pulling it on. His eyes fell on the book on the coffee table, ā€œWhat the fuck is this?ā€ he scooped it up quickly as though his brother hadnā€™t already seen it, snapping it closed and holding it tightly to himself, ā€œDonā€™t go through my stuff.ā€ he mumbled, unsure what else he could say about the thing.

hiddenpathologist:
Her father soon boarded the boat. Molly grinned and greeted him with a big hug and a loving kiss to the cheek. Although her father had no formal first mate of the ship, he considered Molly as his mate. He trusted her with nearly everything and anything!Ā
When Molly noticed Sebastian heading for the cargo hold she frowned softly a little. All the mens things had been boarded during their check in, nobody had any excuse to go down there. She followed him closely though at a safe enough distance for her not to be spotted. Molly had been on enough ships with enough men to know when one is up to no good.Ā
ā€œForgotten something have you sir?ā€ She asked clearly and loudly, stepping out from the shadows revealing herself.Ā ā€œI can assure you that all your possessions are safe down here. Nobody will get to them I give you my word. Now the captain has requested the presence of all the gentlemen on board before we set sail. I ask you to hurry. He does not like to be kept waiting!ā€ Molly stared at him for a moment firmly to assert her status in the situation.
Sebastian noticed when heā€™d gained a little shadow, but continued to walk. No sense faltering, or running off like heā€™d done something wrong. May as well hang a sign around his neck that said ā€œIā€™m suspicious.ā€ Instead he acted as though everything was fine and normal.
He hadnā€™t been expecting her to address him. He looked up, not particularly bothering to feign shock, ā€œJust checking on the cargo.ā€ he shrugged, ā€œI hope youā€™re not trying to accuse me of anything, miss. Iā€™m hardly a common criminal.ā€
He leaned against a nearby barrel like he owned the place, ā€œIn any case, I paid to be here, Iā€™m not beholden to the captain. I shanā€™t cause trouble on his ship, but Iā€™m not a hound at his beck and call either.ā€ he looked her up and down, ā€œYou donā€™t look like a sailor.ā€

ā€œLike I said, you get used to it,ā€ he shrugged and then added with forced casualness,Ā ā€œPlus itā€™s nice having someone to come home to. I bet going home every night to an empty flat gets lonely.ā€ It still made him cringe to think the other Sebastian might realise he was so pathetically desperate for human contact that heā€™d gotten married just to avoid loneliness. He had to be different than the other man in that respect, because clearly the other Sebastian didnā€™t mind being alone.
He subconsciously mirrored the other manā€™s frown with one of his own.Ā ā€œI suppose I was just caught up in the moment, trying to call your bluff,ā€ he lied. He fell silent after that, considering the whiskey in his glass before giving a minute shake of his head.Ā  ā€œNo,ā€ he admitted softly.Ā ā€œThatā€™s not entirely it. I guess itā€™s just hard sometimes to care whether I live or die.ā€ He peeled his eyes away from his drink to look searchingly at his doppelgƤnger, wondering if he ever felt the same way. Surely he had to have what with the danger of his job and his honest insistence that he wasnā€™t happy either. Heā€™d have thought learning that the other man wasnā€™t happy would make him feel better, but it was somehow even more depressing knowing they were miserable no matter the universe they were in. Exhaling a soft sigh, he scrubbed a hand over his face only to remember the bruises there and wince slightly at the motion.Ā ā€œI guess weā€™re both just fucked then, arenā€™t we? Happy birthday.ā€ He sarcastically clinked his class against the other Sebastianā€™s before downing its contents.Ā
Immediately after, he had to fight down a surge of defensiveness at the suggestion of marriage counseling. It was a bit too close to therapy to make him feel entirely comfortable. The thought of discussing his marital problems with a stranger made him almost wish the other Sebastian had gone ahead and stabbed him after all.Ā  ā€œJesus, I hope it doesnā€™t fucking come to that. Iā€™d rather just start off trying to be honest with her without dragging a stranger into it.ā€ Of course he couldnā€™t be honest with her about everything. He might be able to admit that he didnā€™t want children, but his penchant for murdering the homeless would have to stay his little secret.Ā  He signaled the bartender for another drink as he listened to the other man discuss his lack of friends. He couldnā€™t entirely relate; telling people you were a soldier was far more socially acceptable than telling them you were a gun for hire. ā€œNothing wrong with a little narcissism. I do have friends and Iā€™d still rather spend my time with you. I guess as much as we might hate each other sometimes, we do still see eye to eye.ā€
Ā Ā Ā  ā€œLonely...ā€ Sebastian repeated, thinking on it, ā€œLook, men like us werenā€™t meant to be in the company of others. You get used to it, drown it out, but...ā€ he shrugged, ā€œI guess it does get a little lonely sometimes. But what does it matter? Itā€™s for the best. Youā€™re gonna end up hurting that wife of yours. Living with you will wear on her if you donā€™t keep up the act, and you canā€™t forever.ā€
ā€œI thought that might be it.ā€ Sebastian sighed, ā€œI get a kick out of nearly dying. Nothing gets my heart pumping more. I throw myself into these situations with the full knowledge that I may not make it out, and Iā€™m okay with that.ā€ He looked away. He couldnā€™t look at the other, ā€œLike I said, I hate you.ā€ he mumbled. He couldnā€™t outright kill himself though. No. He was too fearful of that, on some level. So he would try his best to survive while occasionally hoping he wouldnā€™t. The other was probably the only person he knew who would understand that.
ā€œWe are. I donā€™t think itā€™s possible to be completely happy. I do alright, but birthdays arenā€™t a great time to ask how I am.ā€ He clinked his glass back, ā€œHappy birthday.ā€
He chuckled, ā€œYeah but youā€™re not gonna be honest with her, are you? And shit is just gonna keep decaying. Look theyā€™re just there as a mediator, arenā€™t they? Stop it getting too one-sided. I imagine youā€™ll want that when she starts airing all her grievances about you.ā€
ā€œOn most things, we do.ā€ Sebastian nodded, checking his pockets and nodding, ā€œRight, finish that off and come to the bathroom with me, yeah?ā€

stripedsniper:
ā€œI feel like Iā€™ve gone completely nuts,ā€ Sebastian answered dryly. He knew he hadnā€™t, because if the other man was in his head, heā€™d not be able to reach out and touch him. Though the whole experience was made hardly less surreal knowing it was actually happening and wasnā€™t just the product of his dysfunctional mind.Ā  When the bartender left the bottle for them, Sebastian gladly refilled his own glass. It was always easier pouring it himself, because heā€™d give himself a damn sight more whiskey than bartenders usually did. As he set the bottle on the bar top again, his eyes met the other manā€™s and he shrugged.Ā ā€œYou keep trying to get me to justify myself to you, but what about you justifying yourself to me?Ā Why the fuck are you still single? Have you really never had one serious relationship?ā€ He shot his doppelgƤnger a wry look. ā€œAre you just holding out for the attention of your boss, or what?ā€ He wasnā€™t sure if he were right about that, but with the way the other Sebastian spoke of Jim, it was hard not to wonder.Ā  Tapping his fingers absentmindedly against his glass, he listened to the other man explain what a big industry organised crime was. He didnā€™t doubt it; surely there was a call for someone who could shoot as well as himself and he likely would be able to find work, if not with Jim Moriarty then someone else. The more the other Sebastian spoke about it, the less far-fetched it seemed.Ā ā€œIā€™ll consider it.ā€Ā
Huffing out an annoyed sigh, he knocked back another drink. He was rapidly approaching tipsy but still felt no more at ease discussing his sexuality than he would have if heā€™d been stone cold sober.Ā ā€œFuck off,ā€ he grumbled.Ā ā€œIā€™m not afraid of our father, but if Iā€™ve put this much effort into not getting disowned why would I chance it with something like that? Same with the army. Iā€™m well respected; people like me. Doubt theyā€™d respect me quite as much knowing I like cock.ā€ Cringing at his slip of the tongue, he quickly corrected,Ā ā€œLiked.Ā Used to like it. Whatever.ā€
Ā  Ā Ā  ā€œMaybe you have. Maybe I have. Who knows?ā€ Sebastian wasnā€™t entirely sure himself. Heā€™d seen menā€™s minds go before. If your tortured a person just right they had this amazing tendency to put themselves somewhere else, to block out the pain and fear and convince themselves utterly that this wasnā€™t happening. He was pretty sure that wasnā€™t what was happening to him now, but he certainly couldnā€™t rule it out, the last thing he could remember, after all, was setting up a job, and then pain. It was far fetched, but so was the idea that heā€™d somehow beamed into some alternate reality. He wasnā€™t ruling anything out just yet, and drink didnā€™t leave much room for critical thinking on the matter.
Sebastian reached for the bottle himself and topped up his drink, ā€œWhy should I have to justify myself to you? Iā€™ve got the better life. To answer your question though, no. I havenā€™t. Single life suits me, itā€™s much more flexible.ā€ He grinned widely at that, ā€œEspecially if you take up yoga.ā€
His grin quickly fell as the otherā€™s next words, ā€œWhat? No.ā€ He shook his head quickly, ā€œThe man is fucking insane. if I donā€™t get killed by someone Iā€™m trying to kill one day, then Iā€™ll be killed by him.ā€ He bit his lip, it wasnā€™t as though the man could find out anything said here, right? ā€œNice arse though.ā€
ā€œPfft.ā€ Sebastian rolled his eyes, ā€œYouā€™re worried about people not respecting you? Youā€™re not respecting yourself, mate. You shouldnā€™t care what other people think. Especially not the army or our father. I know from experience, that lot will drop you in an instant, they already donā€™t respect you.ā€
He chuckled, ā€œLike, Seb. What are you scared of? You can tell me all about your little preferences because I already know them, no judgement here. Iā€™ll even help you pick up if you want.ā€

Sebastian Moran had mixed feelings about being on the ocean again. He loathed being cooped up, but the only way to sate his need to travel, his need not to be trapped, was to trap himself on a boat for an extended period of time.
On the other hand, it would be fantastic to get London out of his system once more, and travel to lands with far less rules or notions of modern civility. Being a city toff had never appealed, and the fresh air too, was welcome.
He usually cleaned up pretty well on these trips, too, all things considered. He didnā€™t like to call what he did cheating, cheating implied winning without skill, and he had much more skill with the cards than any who lost their hard-earned coin to him below deck to a few hands. Very rarely did anyone actually catch him out as a cheat either. Sure there were some shallow accusations, but hardly ever any proof. Many would stand up for him as the only honest hand in the game.
He decided to scope out the ship once boarded, and look around for any opportunities to swipe some of the wine reserved for more special occasions on-board. He didnā€™t notice Molly watching him and they others as they boarded, as he made a beeline to the cargo hold. The trick always was to look as though you were exactly where supposed to be, and nobody asked questions.

The year was 1883. Queen Victoria was still reigning strong and London was thriving. Down at the docks many ships came and went bringing in traded goods and newcomers to the land.Ā
Molly Hooper was the only child of the captain of a boat that occasionally docked in London. She had been with her father, sailing ever since her mother died when she was only young. She loved every second of it. The sea, the air, the places they saw together. But sailing as a lonely, unmarried lady had its problems. All the men that came onto the boat would try something with her. Extremely flirting, sometimes even worse. Most of her time would be spent in her quarters or with her father.Ā
It was the beginning of April when their boat was docked in London. She stood on deck looking down the Thames as the new recruits boarded. Molly let out a heavy sigh. For once she wished she had a friend with her but alasā€¦ she had none.

The relief that washed over the sniper was practically palpable when he knew heā€™d not have to stop killing, Jim had to admire that bloodlust, it wasnā€™t easy to find someone not only willing to kill for money but wanting to kill just for the sheer RUSH it provided. It was one of the many reasons heā€™d been chosen for the new position.

It wasnā€™t that he didnā€™t ENJOY getting his hands dirty, not at all but doing so always came with risks, evidence could be left behind so easily regardless of how many precautions were taken and he was too smart to leave a trail behind. That would be a rookie mistake.
While he could hold back on explaining what would need to change, Jim figured telling the man in advance meant the process would run smoother, heā€™d have time to adjust to the new lifestyle heā€™d be thrown into. As FUN as it would be to see him flounder as new rules were put down, it would be a waste of time in the long run.
Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā āā€“ Well, firstly youā€™ll be living with me, itā€™d Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā hardly be useful to have you living all the way Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā out here if youā€™re supposed to protect me.āž
It would be a big change for Jim too, as nonchalantĀ as he was being about it. Of course he had house staff, those that would cook and clean for him but none of them got involved in business work, none of them were worth interacting with beyond giving them instructions. Sebastian would be there for that very reason, to INTERACT, to be his new house pet.
Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā āā€“ I become your number one priority at ALL times. Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā Youā€™ll have time off, down time where you can do Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā as you please but one call from me and you drop Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā EVERYTHING, I am never to be left waiting.āž

Ā Ā  ā€œWait...ā€ Sebastian's brows narrowed. That was an unexpected hitch.Ā ā€œYou need me to live with you? I figured youā€™d need protecting during work, are you saying you need around the clock protection?ā€
That wouldnā€™t work. Sebastian was certain that it wouldnā€™t work. Sure he loved his job, lived for it even, but playing babysitter to a frankly terrifying criminal all day every day? He couldnā€™t imagine that left much personal time. He didn't drink on a job, if he was always on a job, what would that mean for his trips to the pub? If he was to always be on call, he couldnā€™t drink at all. It sounded minor. Trivial. But he tensed up at the idea. Not that he had a problem.
ā€œAnd do you expect youā€™ll need to call me in often?ā€ he asked carefully, thinking it through. Maybe he could come up with a system. A plan. People often said Moriarty was unpredictable, but people said a lot of things. Perhaps they were merely empty rumours. Maybe his schedule would prove itself predictable. He could work around that. Sneak in a few of his ā€˜vicesā€™.
From all the stories heā€™d heard about the man, moving in with him could prove extremely dangerous. He was volatile, but it honestly seemed like a plus to Sebastian. He longed for a bit of excitement in his everyday life. Targets just werenā€™t cutting it anymore.
ā€œFine, but we need to agree on a few things.ā€

ā€œBut we werenā€™t.ā€ Severin shot out, automatically straightening up as if preparing to run. He snatched the cigarette from his mouth, stuffing it back into the pack as he stepped closer, as bold a move as he was going to make all night. Getting closer to Sebastian right then was not on his list of priorities, but sheer adrenaline and hurt had him advancing.Ā
ā€œI donā€™t give a fuck if Iā€™m useless.ā€ A lie.Ā ā€œIā€™ve always been useless! I wasnā€™t raised to be anything else, I wasnā€™t like you. Christ, I was the fuckinā€™ back up, the fuckinā€™ fail safe in case you fucked up, which you did. And I werenā€™t no good at being that either. Dā€™you even understand how hard he tried to make me like you? But it was too late for that. And, fuck, if you think he liked you then youā€™re dumber than you look; the jumped up little prick didnā€™t like anyone. Mightā€™ve looked at you once or twice thinking it was his own damn reflection, mightā€™ve looked a bit like approval, but Christ did he love the sight of himself?ā€Ā
Severin threw the pack after his brother as he stormed off, the last petty gesture of contempt he had left in him. Severinā€™s temper came like opening floodgates. Passive and snarky trickles, followed by an onslaught of sheer spite.
Ā  Sebastian had wanted to hit him. Heā€™d wanted to hit him so badly. Smash that smug face of his right in, until it was a mess of loose teeth and blood, and that look on his face was wiped clean off. And then there was the fear, the hate. That was worse than the snark. Heā€™d hit a sore spot but it hadnā€™t stopped the tirade, only made it worse. Sebastian simultaniously felt like his father, and like he was being berated by his father. An unpleasant feeling.
And he felt guilty, on some level, of course he did. Severin had wallowed in his shadow but it wasnā€™t a shadow heā€™d wished to leave behind. He didnā€™t cause this. He didnā€™t do any of it. If heā€™d still had his way, he wouldnā€™t have been cast out and Sev wouldnā€™t have needed to be a replacement Sebastian.
And maybe it was true. Of course it was true. Their father didnā€™t love them. His father only ever looked at him with anything other than the same contempt Severin was showing him, when he did something exactly Moran. Exactly like his father. He was raised as a poor emulation of the man, his appearance only encouraging that more.
He was drunk and stumbly and without wallet and flask, but he managed to find his way into a few fights that night. He got a black eye, a blood nose, but looking at those he bashed up, he definitely came out the victor each time. Training, experience, and a fiery pit of anger all trumped his drunkness. Made him dangerous. He found his way home covered in other menā€™s spit and blood. It had felt good. He really was as bad as his father.
