Devil May Cry 3 "Jackpot" scene. A mistranslation of Vergil's line.
The line in question is the one that Vergil says after ‘"Jackpot!”
In the dub, he said “Not very classy for someone’s dying words”, but looking at the Japanese subtitles, it seems that he wasn’t referring to Arkham, it was about the catchphrase ”Jackpot!”
決めゼリフ [kime zerifu] (signature phrase) セリフ [serifu] (quotes, lines, words), this has mostly to with dialogue in writing, like the lines from a script for plays or movies.
In Japanese, the subtitles for Vergil’s line is 品のないセリフ. (hin no nai serifu)
品のない can mean “no class or style, boorish)
Tumblr media
I think it’s obvious that his remark wasn’t about what Arkham said, but I think most fans believed that his comment was about Arkham’s last words.
I mentioned that in Japanese ‘serifu’ means lines or quotes. So Dante asked, 'Remember our catchphrase (serifu)? And Vergil tsaid in Japanese ’ hi no nai SERIFU’, which I would translate as “boorish” (word or phrase) It sounds like something he would say xD
Even if let’s say, he was referring to Arkham’s last line (I have the true power of Sparda!), using 'serifu’ is a weird choice instead of using 'kotoba’ which is the most common term to say ‘words’. In Japanese ‘saigo no kotoba’ would translate as dying/last words. If you were to use ‘serifu’ it would be understood as someone’s line/quote from a movie, book, etc.
If I had to translate the line into English to make it clear that he was referring to Dante, I would say something like, “Boorish. Just like you”
Of course you would ask “Why would he make a comment like that when it’s a phrase that he and Dante used to say? Also, he smiled when Dante brought it up.”
Well, I have a theory. Sure, in that moment he smiled, he was recalling a happy memory of his childhood, but it was for such a short moment because Vergil had to resume his objective after he ended his temporary team-up with Dante.
It could be that when he smiled, it was because he was caught up in the moment with Dante as they fought together against Arhkam, but once the truce ended, Vergil had to return to his cold persona and perhaps that remark was to mock Dante. I think Vergil wanted to imply “you’re such a child if you’re still saying that”, because y’know, Vergil was the eldest, he had to maintain that image that he was the serious one,.
I heard about it but I don’t have a source (maybe some of of you know) that it was Vergil’s VA, Dan Southworth who didn’t like "Jackpot”.
Although he didn’t say it together with Dante in DMC5, he says that in gameplay. Most likely because Dante isn’t with him to make fun of him xD
So yeah, I wanted to talk about how that line “Not very classy for someone’s dying words” was a mistranslation, which is obvious when looking at the Japanese subtitles.

I modified the post about how Vergil's line was misinterpreted in the Jackpot scene in DMC3. I tried to make it more concise.

Translated Devil May Cry 3 column from the book "Trinity of Fates". It explores the relationship between Vergil and Dante and how they are defined by each other's existence.

Devil May Cry 3 "Note of Naught" has storyboards and they look goofy xD The art style looks like it's from 80-90's manga in my opinion.

Netflix Dante's design
Netflix Dante looks similar to Visons of V Dante and since the first season of the show is apparently taking place in the DMC3 timeline when Dante was supposed to be around 19-20 years old, I personally don't see Netflix Dante as being that age because he looks so much like VoV Dante and that's the version of him when he's a man in his forties. Here's some images of him from the manga to compare. It's like the animation team put that version of him the show, minus the beard.

The hairstyle and the eyebrows are similar with the ones from the manga in my opinion.
Unless he might actually be aged up due to the fact that this show won't be canon to the series, then it's not a problem that he looks older, but if he isn't, it's weird to see DMC5 Dante in the DMC3 timeline.

I think he would have looked better with those alternatives hairstyles on the bottom, except the 2nd one, that looks weird on him.

Keep in mind that I'm not an artist and what I will say is only based on my observations, but if Netflix Dante is around 20, what I think it would have contributed to make him look younger is the shape of his his jawline. His face is square shaped, which I mostly have seen in older male characters that are in mid 20-30 years old. Maybe if the jawline was a bit curvy, it would give the impression that he's younger. Lastly, if you look at his eyes, the lines under them, which I will call wrinkles and hopefully that's correct, if he's always depicted with them and not just when he scrunches his face like when's grinning those wrinkles are another detail that I have mostly see in older males though not always, but that's what I observed in the anime/manga I've seen. So yeah, that's about it. Personally, he's not attractive even though he kinda looks like VoV Dante. Let me know your opinions!
