(through gritted teeth) sometimes what's good for your mental health isn't another do nothing day or a little treat sometimes what's good for you is putting in some of the work. Not all of it at once but sometimes you have to finish that essay or at least take the next step or you have to clean your room or at least dust the shelves or you gotta do the laundry or at least put it all in the hamper and it's not fun and it sucks and it sucks and it sucks and it sucks and it sucks and it sucks and it sucks and it sucks and it sucks and it sucks and it sucks and it sucks and it sucks and it sucks and it sucks and it sucks and it sucks and it sucks and it sucks and it sucks and it sucks and it sucks and it sucks and it sucks but you have to because i read a post on the internet that told me that's what being nice to yourself is sometimes

I think one aftereffect of the pandemic is that because delivery was normalized for a year or so, people stopped perceiving it as a luxury service and started expecting it. And it wasn't just normalized--it was being widely promoted as the responsible choice, because under the conditions of the pandemic that's what it was, and we were constantly fighting this battle because Republicans were willing to kill and die for their right to go sit in a Bob Evans. I think we would have had a problem with adjusting expectations post-pandemic anyway, but I think it's probably a lot worse because people absorbed so many "just get everything delivered to your door, that's good!" messages aimed at the people who refused to stay home during a pandemic. If acknowledging the seriousness of the pandemic hadn't been so politicized I don't think it would be this bad now.

I mean surely we all grew up feeling like there was a wrongness inherently deep inside us that will endure for the rest of our lives
