Planet Of The Apes (1968)
Tumblr media
8/10
Considering how iconic this film is its a marvel that i hadn't caught it before. Interesting and thought provoking from start to finish with multiple themes explored: animal mistreatment, racial division, science vs religion etc. It has aged well in my opinion; campy as fuck but the aesthetics of the ape civilization make up for it, along with this dashes of light humor keep the film from taking itself too seriously. Editing and camera work is top notch, i absolutely love the use of fast zooms into objects/people of interest. Acting, characters and script is great - highlights are the famous "damned dirty apes line" at the culmination of a fun and extended chase sequence, and of course the ending of the film which despite being spoiled for me a long time ago, gained much more emotional significance after watching the rest of the film. If you haven't seen this check it out, its pretty much essential viewing.

Lost In Translation (A controversial opinion)
Tumblr media
7/10 Likeable characters and performances (Bill Murray is god) bring this well directed, but slightly lacking comedy drama above the line of mediocrity. Also provides a thought provoking depiction of 'love' - are the two leads actually in love or is it the result of their current dissatisfaction with life?

X-men: Days Of Future Past
Tumblr media
8/10 Excellently directed, acted and written. Focuses on not just awesome action but human drama too, definitely go see this one if you can - a treat for fans and non-fans of the genre.

6.5/10
Nice, original horror flick that relies for the most part on old-school scare techniques. Genuinely frightening at parts, but begins to lose that essence in the final third when the monster is outright revealed frequently. Anyone who is a fan of horror movies will dig this as it has some really great scenes and harks back to an era before the genre became mostly about jump scares. Loses marks for the final third; in particular the ending, but still definitely worth checking out.
