Taka & Hiroki's Tattoos

I was asked to feature the Moriuchi brothers’ tattoos here. Honestly, I don’t keep track of Taka’s tattoos. Apart from a few major ones he has, the rest look too random to me to take seriously. Besides, they’ve been written about many times. But there may be some new fans here who want to know.

Despite the many fans trying to find similarities between Taka and Hiro, these two brothers are very distinctively different in tastes, personalities and thinking. These are also reflected in their choices of tattoos.

So far and as far as I know, Taka still limits his tattoos to only his arms from shoulders down to the wrist. Hiro, on the other hand, has less tattoos but has shown that he has no qualms about venturing beyond the upper arms. Taka seems to be fascinated with symbols and triangular shapes in particular. Hiro seems to have given deeper thoughts into his choices but once he made up his mind, he went with a BANG. Both brothers are philosophical but in their own different ways.

*Please also take note that OOR members in particular have a penchant for doodling on each other’s bodies with marker pens. So, we might get confused sometimes XD

TAKA

Let’s start with his upper right arm.

1. On top is the Sun with the indication 1 o'clock. This is pretty self-explanatory (^^)v 2. Below that is what many have said is “chaosmyth" which many fans already know is a song dedicated to his friends. Kudos to those who had managed to figure it out because it looks like “hanging intestines" to me. I could never tell what it was (*_*)

Down to his lower right arm.

1. One of his major ones which is a Quote that has variations and had been credited to a bunch of different people.

Moving on to upper left arm.

1. From the placement of the symbols, I believe these 4 tattoos are a set that represents “seeing, feeling, thinking” :

i. The “Brain” which is presented with TWO sides or Left brain and Right brain.

ii. The "Mended heart” sits on one side because that side of the brain handles “emotions / feelings”. “Mended heart” usually means “having gone through pain but now healed” which is probably a reflection of himself based on his lyrics. He is a healed man now.   

iii. The “?” symbol with the letter “y” means “why?” sits on the other side of the brain representing “mind” or “logic”. 

iv. The “all-seeing eye / one-eyed triangle” is an ancient symbol of the Sun. Although it is easy to relate the Sun to the “eye”, as well as him being Japanese and there being Shinto belief in Japan, but from my observation of Taka, it most likely represents “seeing / watching / observing” because it is the most matching to the other THREE above in meaning.

Note: The “one-eyed triangle / all-seeing eye" has caused quite a ruckus among fans. I personally believe Taka has nothing to do with Illuminati or knows / gives-a-hoot about it. I believe he chose it because he liked how it looked. Based on his subsequent triangular tattoos, it is apparent that he  likes the shape / design. Please also take note that the Japanese aren’t particularly religious as a society. I certainly don’t feel there is any religious connotation to any of his tattoos. 

2. The “palms of the hands” are a pair of “LOVE” and "HATE”. “Hands” can also mean “power”. Hence, you have the “power” to “love” or to “hate”. 3. The “TTR” and “lightning bolts” are something he shares with his bandmates. “TTR” means “Toru”, “Tomoya” and “Ryota”. 4. Not sure what do those “rows of small symbols” mean to him or those scattering of “small crosses” represent.

5. He also added a pair of tiny ones underneath the “LOVE" & “HATE" pair which look like a “pulled out molar tooth” each to my eyes. A “tooth"?? What the heck is that supposed to mean? 0_0??

6. Another new addition to his upper arm is the “feather (?)”. Does that represent wings, in a way? Or could it be a “quill”? I have no idea. By the way, a “quill” is that feather pen used in the medieval era…….and Harry Potter. 7. I also still cannot find a close-up photo of the “circle tattoo (?)” above that “feather” either. Seems to look like another “quote”. If that really is a tattoo and not another doodling by his friends though XD

His lower left arm.

1.  The “xx.xv” is of course “35”. He said in this YouTube interview that he just believes it’s a lucky number when he came to the USA. As simple as that.

2. The “tribal triangle” is another additional one he informed to the fans but didn’t tell if it means anything.

3. His most interesting tattoo on the lower left arm is of course this “quote”.

 His left wrist.

Probably the fangirls’ favourite. It is a “bat”. I have no idea what it means to him either. Yes, he likes doodling and Doraemon is a cartoon he relates his childhood to because he saw a bit of himself in Nobita.

 HIROKI

As far as we can see, Hiro has 4 distinctive tattoos. However, I am not ruling out possibilities that he might have chosen them simply because he liked the way they looked. After all, he was still a teenager and wasn’t even legal to drink when he had his tattoos done.

His upper right arm 

It is a “compass”. Pretty self-explanatory I guess because a “compass” symbolizes “direction”.

His upper left arm

It is a “spider on its spiderweb”. I think it means “struggle and effort little by little to make something strong” to him. Just my guess based on the way Hiro talks in interviews.

By urban legend definition, a spiderweb normally means “doing time in prison”. That is so NOT what it is to Hiro XD

His chest

Hiro’s best tattoo to me. It says “Rule the Fate” in classically-styled script font which makes it tasteful and elegant befitting those words.

His left pinky

Number “4” in a simple non-serif script. The most understated tattoo but the most mysterious one.

It’s hard to tell what significance the number “4” holds to Hiro. Other than him being born in “1994” and it is his “4th” tattoo, it’s still puzzling to connect the number to him. It is particularly strange to me as the number “4” usually means “misfortune” or “death” in Eastern superstition. Maybe Hiro is just not superstitious. I wish I could ask him directly (-_-)

My thoughts:

I personally think that Taka’s tattoos look like “ants and bugs crawling up his arms”. Sorry, Taka. You sing beautifully but I’m not into your tattoos. Also, whatever you do, please don’t tattoo over your birthmark (natural tattoo). Natural is best (^^)
