Rewatching OUAT season 1 with a friend for probably the first time since I discovered the show and wow...the quality in comparison to later seasons including the writing is just so very noticeable. Magic and curses are all well and good, but what I noticed was that they didn’t lean heavily on magic to explain plots or throw in a bunch of cheap CGI.

(God, the cheap CGI took me out of it SO badly. If you can’t afford it, don’t do it, dammit!)

Most of the bad guys causing the drama were just people being downright evil without the help of magic. Can we talk about how DAMNED evil Regina was in season 1 and just in Storybrooke alone?? And I just think that was a fantastic thing and something that the writers seemed to more or less abandon more cheap plot devices as the seasons wore on and I wish that they hadn’t.
