5 Great Lounges in the Lower East Side | NYC
The Lower East Side is typically thought of as the stopping grounds of the working class—a bit gritty, and certainly not flashy or sophisticated. Yet there is a certain authenticity to this part of the city that gives it a panache all its own. Here are 5 lounges that you should check out to get that LES feel and have a great time!
1. Antler Bear & Wine Dispensary If you’re looking for a great craft beer selection, this is the spot to stop. On Allen Street right above Delancy, Antler provides easy Friday night out. A rustic kind of anthropology vibe will have you not missing the hype at all, and instead enjoying a relaxing night with friends. Their prices are reasonable, and don’t stop at just beer, they also have an organic wine selection with some options on draft. They even have a back room with games and couches.
2. Back Room This speakeasy, one of my personal favorites, is going to require some extra effort to locate. You have to go down a set of steps (next to Sunita Bar) and through an underground hallway to find this gem. The teacups used for serving drinks and live jazz music creates that old fashion feel. It is one of only two speakeasies that were still in operation in NYC during the prohibition, so soak yourself up some history this weekend and check it out.
3. Open House Open House is the probably one of the chicest little lounges you’ll find on the L.E.S. Host a fashionable party without all the drama (contact Birthdays and Bottles to arrange). There’s even a secret dance floor at Open House, but space is limited, so be prepared to make new friends! The music is hoppin’ so this is a great place to get people together and let loose on the weekends.
3. Spitzer’s Corner Spitzer’s Corner is at the crossing of Ludlow and Rivington, and they are a gastropub experience you won’t forget. Start your night out with delicious American food and your choice of 40 draft beers, wine, or mixed drinks. They are pretty much famous for their truffle mac and cheese, and they have a new Darkhorse Oatmeal Stout (which I’m dying to try). It might be an early evening stop though, considering that the open seating fills pretty quickly. It would also be a great spot for day drinking, if that’s your thing. It’s typically a pretty hoppin’ casual lounge.
5. M 1-5 Just outside the L.E.S., this bar & lounge is the perfect place to spend a weekend night with friends. Happy hour is from 4-10pm, which is ultra convenient. It’s a casual atmosphere, but it also has a club feel, dancing, and great tunes, but all without the cover charge. A varied crowd makes everyone feel like they belong. This spot is also a great place for hosting parties (contact Birthdays and Bottles to arrange). No pomp and circumstance, just go and have a great time at M1-5!

3. Open House When Open House was being designed, Blackbook columnist, Steve Lewis, was consulted for his remarkable knowledge of city nightlife in order to create an elegant party space that combines both modernity and classical styles. This chic venue offers the perfect balance between contemporary swank and vintage old-school providing the perfect location for any birthday party. It is described as “a cordial house setting” where the antique furniture, flowers in mason jar vases, and gilded wallpaper, coupled with the unique flavors of bacon infused whiskey, strawberry infused rum, or blueberry vodka sets the mood for a laid back atmosphere that can be enjoyed by any party goer out there. The homey feel of Open House offers an immediate comfortability so plan to dance the night away to a mix of hip hop, top 40, electro, rock, 80’s and old school favorites on the main floor of this lower east side hot spot at a birthday party more memorable than your 21st! 5 Things You Must Know About Guest Lists in New York City
If you’re young and living in New York city, chances are you enjoy the night life. There are dozens, maybe even hundreds of nightclubs in NYC to let loose and have a good time at and one way to ensure your entrance to these clubs is to know the ins and outs of the guest lists. Here at Birthdays and Bottles, we’ve put together an extensive list of five tidbits of knowledge, crucial to New York city guest lists from the do’s and don’ts to how to get on them and other questions you’re dying to know!
1. Being on the guest list does not always guarantee admittance Your name on the guest list is just one of many factors considered by the manager. Lounges in NYC are looking for crowds who add to the atmosphere and if your party is too large, you have a bad attitude, or the club is already too crowded then your name being on the guest list may not matter. It’s also important to know that not being on the guest list is not an automatic rejection at the club doors. If you look like someone who is going to bring the party with you to a club on a slow night, if you’re fun, and easy going, and if you look like you’re in it for the long haul, the club manager may still let you in. So to sum it up— being on the guest list does not make or break you.
2. How to get on the guest list If you’re reading this article you’re probably thinking that going to an exclusive club and hoping they let you in because you look fun is not something you’re willing to test. You’re saying “but how do I get on a guest list?” Well you can use your connections with the owner or manager of a club— if you have them they’re a great asset that you should utilize. You can use a promoter however this option can be just as risky as hoping you get into the club without your name on the guest list. Promoters can be unreliable and sometimes they do not have the ability to persuade the manager enough to get just anyone into the club. The third, more reliable option, is to use a bottle service (like Birthdays and Bottles perhaps) that can help get you the night out you’ve always dreamed of. There are a handful of clubs that don’t really care whether you’re on a guest list; minimums are as high as $2K for a party of only 10 people.
3. Dress accordingly It’s important to know that, whether or not you’re on the guest list, complying with the dress code is a must! Getting onto a guest list or getting access to an exclusive club is much easier if you look like you belong with the A-list guests. Do your research on the dress code of whichever club you’ll be attending but know that it’s generally expected that some effort was put into your attire.
4. Picking the right club You’ll have an easier time getting onto the guest list of a club that fits your style and taste. Club owners and managers want people who make their club even more enjoyable so if you look for clubs that you’ll have fun at, the manager will be able to see that you’ll add to the vibe they’re going for. Make sure you research the types of crowds at any given club, the types of music they play, and the nights to be there. If you pick the right club for you, getting in will only be the beginning of a great night!
5. Who do you know? Back in the day, everyone in a party had to be on the list. This is no longer the case! If you’re having a party (and say you used a bottle service to ensure getting on the guest list) your name is the only one that has to be on the list. Invite all your friends and their friends— even if you don’t know their names— because the only name that needs to be known is yours.

5 Ways to Celebrate 30 in New York City
As everyone has to at some point in their lives, my sister just went through what she believed to be a traumatic milestone in her life— she turned thirty. Transitioning from your twenties to your thirties can be really scary, no doubt, but what my sister has begun to realize, and you will too, is that being 30 doesn’t mean you’re “over the hill”, being 30 marks the beginning of a fun-filled, real adult life and being 30 in New York City is what people dream of! So seize the day and enter into your thirtieth year of life with the thrill and excitement of all that New York City has to offer; here are five ways to celebrate turning thirty in NYC!
1. The Chester- Meatpacking District Start your birthday with brunch at the Chester! This quaint restaurant, located in the Meatpacking District has a decadent menu perfect for celebrating your 30th birthday. Try their Brioche Trench Toast if you have a sweet tooth or the Eggs Benedict if you’re craving something savory. If you’re more the type who orders “lunch” at brunch, check out their Foie Gras Apple Burger or the Caprese sandwich; regardless, pair the delectables with a tasty cocktail like their Espresso Martini— Ketle one, Godiva Kahlua, and espresso— or The Cobblestone— tanqueray, mint cucumber, and rhubarb bitter— for an unforgettable 30th birthday brunch! This venue is one of the best birthday restaurants in nyc. It’s large enough to accommodate 300 guests so don’t hesitate to invite all of your friends to help you celebrate.
2. Hotel Chantelle- Lower East Side If you’re a history loving partier then Hotel Chantelle is the ideal setting to kick off your thirtieth year of living! The name of the hotel comes from a World War II safe house and as soon as you step into it, you’ll feel like you’re in Paris in the 1940’s.They have it all from a rooftop restaurant and garden to an underground dance floor where you can party the night away. Hotel Chantelle offers a sophistication without being stuffy so it really is the perfect place to celebrate turning thirty. They have a plethora of delicious cocktails ( Sunny and Share with bourbon, fresh peaches, and mint, yum!) and I wish I could list them all because of how tasty they sound but you’ll just have to plan your birthday bash at Hotel Chantelle and find out for yourself what a hidden gem it is! 3. Open House This lounge makes its guests truly feel at home. It’s tucked away behind a wooden façade so when you walk in on your thirtieth birthday you’ll be transported to a completely unexpected space. If you’re feeling adventurous, try their tomato basil martini and mushroom flatbread. 5 Trending Hip Hop Clubs in New York City 2016
Clubs all over the city are opening their doors to eager customers for the chance to be THE space that hosts THE parties. We’ve hand picked a list of five amazingly hot clubs in New York that are sure to make your upcoming event unforgettable. Each venue we’ve chosen has its own unique attribute that sets it apart from anything you’ve ever experienced; there are clubs with no roof, multileveled clubs, clubs that allow you to let loose and go wild, and clubs that offer a sense of sophistication so come one, come all, these five trending clubs will not disappoint.
Sky Room First up, the Sky Room. Imagine this: the sun is setting over the city and just and it’s getting ready for bed, laser lights begin dancing in an entrancing show through the fog of a smoke machine while a DJ spins a tune so perfect you can’t help but get up and dance until the sun reawakens. What seems to be a scene taken right from a movie becomes a real possibility at one of the most unique hip hop clubs in New York, the Sky Room! They have amazing views, mouthwatering cuisine, and heavenly cocktails plus with their five distinct spaces, partygoers can relax in the privacy of the South Terrace cabanas or enjoy the effervescent sunset in the North Terrace with its retractable roof. If you’re searching for a venue where you can harness your inner hip hop star at your event, look no further, the Sky Room is the place for you!
Hudson Terrace Next we have the Hudson Terrace which was designed with the intention of attracting fun-loving, life-living, adventurers. It is truly a one of a kind place with Hudson River views, two enormous dance floors, and a great selection of dancing music, this bi-floor night club is sure to set your party apart from all the others. You’ll remember what an amazing time you had while experiencing their open air atmosphere due to the retractable roof (SO COOL!), sipping tasty cocktails and delectable dishes all night long! One of the best aspects of the Hudson Terrace is that it is large enough (or small enough) to accommodate any size of gathering you’re hoping to have. Hudson Terrace is amazing which is why it’s in our list.
Taj Third on our list is a hidden gem, a diamond in the rough really. Taj II is an incredibly balanced atmosphere that allows all the guests in attendance to de- stress and let loose! Because of the three New York city venues and their flexibility to host an array of events, Taj is a place for everyone. When you walk in the doors you’re immediately transported to Indian night life in the event space, lounge, and restaurant. They have a copper-topped bar and interesting, imported décor that adds to the ambiance and helps create an unforgettable experience. When you choose Taj for your event be sure to try their roasted beet salad, Chilean Sea Bass dish, or coconut and green curry vegetables paired with one of their tasty cocktails like The Elderflower— a decadent mix of vodka, elderflower cordial, lemon, and champagne— or the Sari Night— rum, tamarind, cranberry, lemon, and lime. Taj is the place to be if you’re looking for a classy, exotic venue to host your next event!
M1-5 Our fourth recommendation is perfect for everyone. This fun, casual bar truly has it all! Cozy lounge seating, curtained booths for intimate conversation, and a bar area with eight flat screen TVs perfect for viewing the big game. Not only that, they have an in house PA system, state of the art turntables, and a stage compatible for dancing until early morning hours! When you’re taking a break from all the dancing, enjoy some delectable dishes M1-5 has to offer! They have the expected bar food including delicious wings, beef sliders, and chicken tenders but if you’re feeling adventurous, consider ordering the samosas, an Indian pastry with potatoes and peas that is one of my personal favorite dishes of all time, or perhaps the Boullette— Moroccan spiced lamb meatballs, tomato coulis, saffron, and preserved lemon aioli on a baguette. M1-5 is hip, fun, and hands down one of the best places to throw a party!
The Attic Last but certainly not least is The Attic. Renowned designer, Marc Dizon, found inspiration from the Golden Era of Hollywood when creating the masterpiece space. It is a relaxed environment with a cozy lounge, plush seating at the bars, multiple levels and a DJ booth with spectacular systems making it an amazing spot to host an event. The color palette is one of soothing silvers and grey interspersed with warm woods that set the mood for an elegant evening soirée. Be sure to try the Maple Glazed Lamb Lollipops and the Uptown Penicillin cocktail— a tasty concoction Dewars Scotch, Glenlivet 12 Yr, Muddled Ginger House Honey/Mint Syrup, Fresh Lemon Juice. For a sophisticated night to remember, check out The Attic!

The 5 Best Bars in the Meatpacking District
Almost every city has its own meatpacking district, but few are nearly as famous as the one in New York City. Located on the lower west side of Manhattan, this district traditionally is seen as running roughly from West 14th St. in the north down to Gansevoort Street in the south. It also runs from famous Hudson Street west to the Hudson River. While these borders aren’t necessarily set in stone, this district was once heavily industrial, evolved into a place that was incredibly popular with several alternative scenes, and eventually fell into disrepair in the late 80s and early 90s. However the Meatpacking District has enjoyed a strong resurgence in recent years catering to the hipster and young professional crowds and is now seen as one of the trendiest and most upscale spots in all of Manhattan.
When you’re looking through a small neighborhood such as the meatpacking district, you may want to fully know your options before choosing one specific bar over any other. Read on to learn about your choices when it comes to excellent bars and clubs in this district.
1. The Brass Monkey
When it comes to looking for those quiet gems of unpretentious bars in a neighborhood that just fit in with a special charm, The Brass Monkey has to top the list of bars in the meatpacking district that fill that description. This unpretentious pub has an impressive beer selection and a roof deck that proves popular with locals and visitors alike. One of the best bars in the area that keeps that old school “Meatpacking District” charm.
2. The Standard Biergarten
Rated by Zagat’s as being some of the finest beer specialists in all of New York City. Set up as a traditional beer garden, you can also enjoy plenty of German fare like pretzels, sausage, and of course, plenty of beer. The ping pong tables offer a great bit of outdoor fun, and there is plenty of room for large and friendly crowds. This is one of the most popular bars in the entire Meatpacking District and it’s not hard to see why.
3. Le Bain
Le Bain is a rooftop bar that overlooks the neighborhood and has a very nice relaxed feeling to it. This falls under the term of trendy and is a music bar with a great wine solution, laid back vibe, and plenty of house music almost every day of the week. Views of the Hudson River and the surrounding neighborhood offer plenty of picture opportunities and the right type of setting to really kick back and enjoy the evening. This isn’t a place to pound a bunch of brews, but it is a great place to enjoy the music and relax as you treat yourself to the nightlife.
4. Troy Liquor Bar
The Troy Liquor Bar is all about the simple and the enjoyable. A wide selection of booze helps anyone enjoy a large serious of games including foosball, pool, and even board games that can be brought out on a variety of tables. Mixed cocktails are available and this street level bar is all about the human interaction and enjoyment of each other’s company. This is one of the most popular bars in the Meatpacking District.
5. STK Downtown & Rooftop
Finally, no bar hop through the Meatpacking District is complete without a stop at STK Downtown & Rooftop bar, which is definitely on the high end side of things. Open from 6 pm to 12:30 am this is a favorite spot for trendy and chic clientele who love their expensive drinks and an amazing steak to go with it.
When you’re looking for quality bars in the Meatpacking District, there are plenty to choose from. Our list is just the tip of the iceberg. We also have great recommendations for secret bars in NYC that you must visit.

6 of NYC’S Best Kept Secret Bars
New York City is known for having a wide range of bars to choose from. The thing is, you wouldn’t be able to find most of them if you didn’t know where to look. As busy as NYC is, there is a lot more to see behind hidden behind random pizza places, underneath clothing stores, and on top of the occasional burger spot. In NYC, we have some of the most exclusive bars on the east coast. In this article, we’re going to cover NYC’s best kept secret bars that you must pay a visit to.
1. The Garret (West Village)
One of the coolest things about the Garret is that you would never stumble upon it if you didn’t know it was there. It’s literally hidden on top of aFive Guys burgers in the West Village. You need to walk all the way to the back staircase and make your way up a relatively narrow passageway. Once you’re upstairs, you’ll find a lofty space with lots of natural light thanks to 2 massage skylights.
2. Nitecap (Lower East Side)
Nitecap is a tiny cocktail bar in the LES tucked inside a basement. It’s hidden directly underneath Schapiro’s, an eatery and cocktail bar. The bar has its own separate entrance next to Schapiro’s. At first, Nitecap was promoted as the spot where bartenders can go after they finish their shifts at other bars and restaurants. Nitecap was opened by the same owners of Death and Co in the East Village. Evenings spent at Nitecap are a damn fine time which are not to be missed by anyone.
3. The Blind Barber
Welcome to the hybrid speakeasy bar–cum-barbershop in the Lower East Side. Inside, you’ll find partygoers who have a passion for skateboarding, tank tops, snap-back hats, and personal fitness. Most would call it a hipster barbershop. The lounge includes a long bronze bar, black-and-white vintage photographs and a bunch of antique furniture. The back room lounge is known as “Grandpa’s den”, for good measure.
4. Bathtub Gin
Bathtub Gin is a modern speakeasy in Chelsea. It’s located behind a tiny storefront called Stone Street Coffee Company on 9th Ave. Though the name ‘Bathtub Gin’ may connote prohibition-era moonshine, the quality of the alcohol served is far from it. You must try the Clover Club, a fabulous concoction of gin, dry vermouth, lemon juice, egg white, raspberry liqueur and fresh raspberries.
5. Back Room
This 1920’s speakeasy is actually original and one of only two speakeasies in NYC that operated during prohibition and is still around today. Back in the day, it attracted theatre performer, actors, and well-known gangster such as Bugsy Siegel, Lucky Luciano and Meyer Lansky. They were known to hold “business meetings” there from time to time, if you catch our drift. The Back Room is extremely exclusive so be sure to have some sort of reservation before you head there.
6. Employees Only
Employees tend to have more fun that customers sometimes, don’t they? Welcome to a fantastic railroad cocktail bar staffed with bartenders who are always elevating the craft of the cocktail. They opened their doors in 2004 and are still going strong over a decade later. Guests have the option for a tarot reading in the small foyer.
Now that you’ve read firsthand that there are plenty of unique and good bars in NYC that are hidden, it’s time to get to work! Start with any bar from the list above and pay them a visit this weekend. Remember: we’ve only covered some of NYC’s best kept secret bars. The truth is, there are plenty more where that came from. The keys to finding the best one for your particular tastes are identifying your interests, what you want from a bar, and what kind of crowd and atmosphere you want to be in. If all you care about are the drinks, all of these bars take mixology to the next level and then some. Immersing yourself in a 1920’s speakeasy bar experience is special – luckily, there are plenty of them to choose from here in NYC.
If you want to arrange bottle service in NYC at any of the above secret bars or the venues we work with, get in touch with us.
