I had a dream the sun was going to explode and in our final moments, when I looked you in the eyes and mouthed I love you because we couldn’t hear over the screaming and the sirens, I had the horrible realisation that if the world were to end, I wouldn’t spend it with you. Then your face became his and that was the first time I’ve ever been able to picture a face so clearly in my dreams, so when the bright nuclear light absorbed everything we’d ever known, I only wanted to be by his side through the end of all things, and I didn’t feel guilty that I didn’t choose you. My I love you wasn’t meant for you, you just happened to be the closest thing to him and the only time we talk is in my dreams. I’m terrified the only time I’ll get to tell him I love you is when the world is ending.
