SUMMERS TEMPORARY || - p2
The dorm room is a decent size, with two beds pushed against the opposite walls. There's a desk, chair, and wardrobe for each of us. The floor is a cold, unforgiving wood, and the walls are a depressing shade of eggshell white.
Eli— or Elizabeth to everyone but me—spots the bed set up"I want the one on the right!" she says, grinning.
I don't argue. If she wants it, she can have it. I'm just happy to be here with her.
As we unpack, I can't help but steal glances at her. She's wearing a crop top and shorts that show off her  stomach and long, tanned legs. Her hair is pulled into a messy bun, and she's sweating slightly from the effort of lifting her suitcase onto the bed. She looks like a goddess.
I'm wearing a baggy long sleeve shirt and sweatpants, my hair in a loose ponytail. I feel like a mess next to her.
"So, what do you think?" she asks, plopping down on her bed.
"It's... it's okay," I answer, setting my bag down on the bottom bunk. "Could be worse."
"Yeah, it could be a single," she laughs.
"True," I concede.
We sit in silence for a few moments before she speaks again. "So, tell me about your summer," she says, leaning against the wall.
I sigh. "It was fine. Just a lot of work and family stuff." Which was particularly true. True enough anyway.
"You know you can tell me anything," she says gently.
But I can't. I can't tell her about how my brother was gone, and how all I wanted was for her to be there. I can't tell her about how I would cry on my bathroom floor silently so I wouldn't wake up my dad.i can't tell her about how my mom was so depressed my brother died, she left.
I can't tell her about why I make myself bleed.
So, I shrug it off. "It's just been busy, you know?"
"Yeah," she nods, her eyes sad. "I've missed you."
The words hang in the air, and I know she means them. I've missed her too. More than I can say.
-
Dinner
It's a cafeteria full of noise and life. The smell of food fills the air, and for the first time in a long time, I'm actually hungry. We grab our trays and make our way through the line, filling our plates with the usual camp fare: overcooked chicken, mashed potatoes that taste like glue, and peas that are suspiciously green.
We sit at the counselor's table, which is in the corner, giving us a perfect view of the chaos.
Eli starts to talk about her summer, and I listen, nodding along. She went to Europe with her family, visited museums, saw the Eiffel Tower, and had gelato in Italy. She's glowing as she tells her stories, and I can't help but feel a twinge of jealousy. She's had the kind of summer I've always dreamed of.
"...And then we went to Spain, and oh my god, the beaches were amazing," she's saying.
I nod, smiling weakly. "Sounds like you had fun."
"I did," she says, her eyes shining. "But it wasn't the same without you."
My heart skips a beat. Does she mean it? Does she have any idea how much I need to hear that right now?
"Yeah, well, I had to work," I reply, trying to keep my voice even.
"I know," she says, her voice softening. "But maybe we can plan something together. You can ask your mom.”
And there it is, the mention of my mom, bringing me back to reality. "Maybe," I mumble, pushing around the food on my plate.
"You know," she says, leaning in closer. "I've noticed something different about you."
I tense up. Is it that obvious? "Different how?"
"I don't know," she says, her eyes searching my face. "You just seem... I don’t know… maybe I’m getting ahead of myself."
"What do you mean?" I ask, my voice barely above a whisper.
"It's nothing," she says, shaking her head. "It's just—you seem sad."
I force a laugh. "Me? Sad? Nah, I'm just tired."
"Mia," she says, her eyes filled with concern. "You can tell me anything."
But I can't. I can't tell her about the sadness that's been my constant companion since my brother's death. I can't tell her about the nights I spend crying, wishing it were me instead of him.
So, I just smile and say, "I'm fine, Eli. Promise."
And she nods, looking like she doesn't believe me but not prying anymore.

SUMMERS TEMPORARY || - p1
My stomach drops the moment I see her. There she is, standing like she owns the world, completely oblivious. Elizabeth Courts—my best friend, my ride or die, the girl who saved me. Just standing there, waiting in the counselor's line for her schedule.
I take a deep breath, trying to summon the courage to face the person I unknowingly fell for.
I sigh and start to walk—
"Omg, Aaron!"
Those are the only words I hear before my body, along with someone else's, crashes to the floor, followed by a piercing shriek.
He'd pushed her and she fell onto me.
"Oh my fucking GOD!" A dashingly familiar voice yells. Alana Blanc.
I groan and roll onto my back.
"Shit, my bad. You good?" Aaron Demark asks, extending his hand to help me up. I grab it, and he yanks me to my feet. I nod in thanks, turning to my right to find a very pissed-off Alana on the ground. Her expression shifts as her eyes frantically scan my face.
"Mia!" she chirps, her tone noticeably fake and overly sweet.
"Here." I mumble, extending my hand to help her up. She takes it reluctantly, and I pull her to her feet.
"So, uh, you look... different..." she says, her eyes flicking up and down. I'm wearing something completely outside the norm—a black oversized long sleeve, baggy pants, and my usual sneakers. Very lesbian.
"I guess," I reply, eager to escape this conversation.
Alana looks around nervously. "So, uh, is Liz with you by any chance?" she asks with an anxious chuckle.
"With me? Not right now, but I'm about to meet her." I answer, noticing the relief wash over her pale face.
"Okay, that's good. See you around," she mutters before walking off with an eye roll. Aaron shoots me an apologetic look before trailing after her.
ALANA BLANC
•••
"MIA!"
"ELI!"
She rushes up and leaps into my arms, wrapping me in a warm, familiar embrace. Her arms slide around my shoulders and neck, while mine settle lower, around her waist, pulling her closer. Her hair tickles my neck and chest.
She leans in, her soft, cherry lips brushing near my ear. "I've missed you so much," she whispers, just for me.
My stomach twists.
I whisper back, "Not as much as I've missed you, I'm sure." Because it's true. She's been on my mind every single day and night.
She gives me one last squeeze and grabs my arm. "Come on, we're so gonna be roommates!"
Shit. I can barely be around her, and now we're going to share a room?
I grab my suitcase and bag, she gets hers, and we race to the counselor's line to get our dorm arrangements.
This is gonna be one hell of a summer.

𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝟎𝟎 - 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐮𝐞
✧༺༻∞✧༺༻∞✧༺༻∞ ✧༻
•P R O L O G U E•
Every year, it's supposed to feel the same.
I find myself in my usual spot, the third-to-last seat on the left side of the bus, with my face pressed against the window. The bus is packed with campers from nearby states, all crammed together in this stifling heat.
But this year, things are different.
I used to spend this ride chatting with my brother, which would've been the case again this year, if he hadn't gotten killed by his own best friend. I guess it's a moral lesson. Don't get dragged to a party friends by your drug addicted friend, incase he gets too high and starts to wave is gun around 'as a joke' ending with you getting shot at twice, ultimately ending your life.
I guess I'm older now, more mature—or at least that's what I tell myself to cope with the fact that my mother couldn't take the stress so she left, leaving me and my father alone. I do everything in the house now since my fathers been picking up every shift as his job, which pays him excellently even if he does is usual shifts, so we have a lot of extra money which isn't getting spent at all, considering his pay nearly doubled for the hours he's been working and since we lost 2 family members in under a year.
The only thing that truly kept me going was camp and the fact that I'd get to see Elizabeth again.
This year, I'm going to be camp counselor, Finally. I get a roommate of my choice and we get to head into town every two weeks (with adult supervision, of course). We even get paid, which I don't need, and it'll look great on my college applications. The best part? I get to do all of this with my best friend.
And that brings me to my main point: I think I'm in love with my best friend, Elizabeth courts.
