This is gonna be a long one

I’ve started collecting tintypes and Ambrotype and y’all get to see my new hyper fixation because it makes me happy.

This is my first Ambrotype. She is part of the Conant or Powers family from Falmouth, Maine. The seller I bought it from believes the photo was taken sometime between 1850-1860.

It’s in amazing condition for the price I got it at ($20). The flecks of black missing in the photo are just the backing or varnish and not the Ambrotype itself. I may see if a professional can help repair this but I don’t want to damage the glass.

I want to fully identify her so I’ve started researching more about the family and I found a book from 1887 on the Conant family history in New England by Frederick Odell Conant. The book is 700+ pages with only pictures of the men of the family not the women so I hit a bit of a dead end.

But I found info on Frederick’s grave from Find a Grave and some folks who got me in contact with living members of the Conant family so I can hopefully get a full identification of this lady. If I do I’ll do an update on the photo.

Also this potentially 170 year old Ambrotype was sent to me in a pop tart box which I find objectively funny.
