We’re super excited to be partnering with @equinebuzz on their monthly features bringing Arizona area equipreneurs into the spotlight!
March 2016, Written by Lexi Hartmann (@bigbaysocial)
Sometimes your horse needs a vacation just as much as you do. For you, that might mean relaxing on the beach, or sipping hot cocoa by a fireplace in a mountain cabin somewhere. For your horse, there’s nothing better than grazing on acres and acres of lush green pasture and, well, just being a horse. That’s exactly what Prescott area “equipreneur” Kim McElroy of Broken Horn D Ranch had in mind when searching for a good use for her land. And she has a lot of land - 140 acres to be precise.
Kim and Broken Horn D Ranch offer pasture boarding for retirees, layups, as well as horses looking for an extended vacation. The Prescott location is ideal for doing just that; with mild seasons and comfortable temperatures year round. Hay is fed in addition to the pasture’s native grasses, as well as salt and water troughs with floats. Farrier work and de-worming are also provided. A show barn with wash rack, arena, and all the amenities is also available.
“Our set up is ideal for the absentee owner wanting his or her horse(s) to experience life as a horse should, while still having professional supervision” explains Kim “We have many repeat customers who send their horses back every summer, to get them out of the Phoenix heat.”
Kim has a BA in Equestrian Studies from Lake Erie College, and she’s been a professional trainer for over 34 years. Not only has she studied in England, but she’s trained with many Olympic veterans in many disciplines including dressage, eventing, hunters, jumpers, cutting horses, versatility ranch horses, and even driving. She also does a little judging when she has time. As if that all weren’t enough, Kim and her husband also raise 100% grass fed Criollo beef, and they sell their meat direct to the consumer. They have eight of their own horses, which they use right on the ranch to work the cattle. They are both lifelong horsemen, and love caring for animals!

Let me tell you a funny story about Impostor Syndrome.
Turns out, it can affect your riding too. I'll never forget the moment I realized this. It was right after the big fancy blue neck ribbon had been secured around Dante's neck and the music began for the victory gallop. I caught myself thinking "Holy crap. I have to gallop. I'm not sure I can gallop."
I thought this immediately after having won medal finals. #ImpostorSyndromeSucks #OfCourseICanGallop #ImAnEqPrincess
