Edward Gorey’s Illustrated Covers for Literary Classics

Between 1953 and 1960

I like the whole composition- using large silhouette to break up page. I like that the type mimics properly printed fonts but is slightly squashed and lumpy, showing it was drawn by hand. Hand drawn it becomes more a part of the illustration than it would if the type just sat printed on top.

Don’t know the book so can't comment on if the cover reflects the tone/ content but the design is eye catching and intriguing despite its simplicity- probably because of it actually. It’s confidence and boldness is appealing- knowing where to draw the eye.
