Ninjago au: Kai Dies AU
Hey, guys!! I’m honestly super surprised to be even making this post because I don't post much about AUs and this one started off as a joke when I was yapping to some Ninjago friends. But people are apparently interested in it?? So uh yeah without further ado, here’s the basic lore of Kai Dies AU, co-created with @hellsballz and @kindaasrikal!!! a lot of these ideas are theirs, and check out #Kai dies au on their blogs for awesome art. They're very swaggy.
So the basic premise is that during the events of Ninjago Monstrosity, Rusty isn’t able to save Kai from drowning in the lake. Instead, he drowns trying to reach the ninja, thinking he’s found a portal to them even in his dying moments.
After death, Kai finds himself, of course, in the Spectral Lands as a ghost. He’s quite disoriented and upset, frantically searching for his family and all that. He’s really not doing well. Well, as we all know thanks to DR, Morro’s job is to guide departed souls into the next life. So you might see where this is going…. KAI MORRO MEETING!!!!!!!!!! Kai doesn’t take to Morro well at all because of their history, lashes out, etc., and Morro is just trying to do his job. Kai refuses to move on because he's desperate to see the ninja again and in denial of the fact that he's dead.
Kai does not have an easy time accepting he's dead. He really thinks he found a portal to his family in the lake. Morro is the one who helps move Kai to realize he's a ghost. Morro eventually goes with Kai to the Land of Monsters, and it's only when Kai sees his body floating face down in the lake that he's able to fully accept that he's truly dead.
Morro and Kai are pretty much inseparable. This AU definitely is a Destinyshipping one but in a doomed, codependent sort of way. As they spend their afterlives together, they very reluctantly bond. Kai holds a lot of inner turmoil because he doesn't want to forgive Morro; Morro caused his brother so much anguish. But he's seeing that Morro has changed. Morro isn't used to letting people in but is slowly realizing that Kai someone he wants to accept and let in. They begin to see that they have more in common than not. For the first time, Morro has someone who truly understands what Morro's gone through. Kai sees more and more of himself in Morro, and it both brings him turmoil and comfort. They wind up in this weird, codependent situantionship filled with a mix of softer moments where they both finally let the walls they build crumble and also fighting/anguish because of everything that's happened/is happening. Neither of them would be able to describe their feelings about the other if asked. Their situationship is also fueled by the fact that in Hellz and I's lore, ghosts can only properly touch and interact with other ghosts. Meaning that Kai, who we all know is super physically affectionate and craves that, can only touch Morro. One of them is constantly under stimulated (Kai), and Morro is easily over stimulated due to not being used to being able to touch and feel others. But Morro gets more comfortable with it due to Kai. They're both incredibly touch-starved.
Now, they do carry on like this for a while, spending their afterlives in the spectral lands bonding and growing a deep connection. But Kai never forgets his mission: find his family, see the ninja again. So at one point or another, he and Morro DO find the ninja, specifically Lloyd first. Lloyd doesn't even recognize Kai, he's just narrowed in on Morro due to their history. Lloyd is busy dealing with confronting Morro, barely registers Kai's presence and just sees him as a ghost crony of Morro's. Until that ghost runs straight for Lloyd and tries (fails) to hug him. Lloyd only stops being scared because ghost trauma when he recognizes Kai's voice. So yeah.
Now, Morro and Kai are eventually around all the other ninja. Kai is trying desperately to find a way to be human again (more on that later) and just wants to be with his family. Morro and Kai are pretty much joined at the hip at this point because they've developed this codependent, "this is the only person I can touch and the only person who understands me" relationship. And seeing Morro and Kai's closeness is a lot for the ninja to take in. Nya is frustrated with Kai and not afraid to call him out. Lloyd is dealing with a lot of inner turmoil; he's a forgiving person. He wants to forgive Morro, he knows Morro has come a long way. But that doesn't erase when he went through when he was still so young. And seeing Kai, who is not as forgiving, being so close to Morro contributes to all this.
all of this, in case it's not clear, has really raised tensions between Kai and the ninja. Between how close he is to Morro and just the sheer horror of knowing Kai is dead. Not turned into a ghost. He died. But it particularly strains RG brothers as previously discussed. But don't worry! It gets worse! Things hit their lowest point between the brothers when Kai does the one thing he knows he should never ever do. When Lloyd's in serious, life threatening danger, Kai panics and possesses him to get him out of there. Even though his intentions were noble and it wasn't for long, this permanently alters how ghost Kai and Lloyd can interact. It's such a massive breach of trust that they can't go back to what it was. And Kai really has nobody who can console him because the ninja all consider what he did incredibly wrong, and Morro is what caused the trauma in the first place. So, yk, RG brothers suffer a lot in this AU. And RB siblings for that matter because Nya won't hesitate to question Kai on all this Morro stuff. And she's the one supporting and helping Lloyd with all his trauma coming back to haunt him, especially post Kai possession.
Now, we haven't quite figured out the exact details, so bear with us. But Kai is able to come back from the dead. He never stops craving his humanity and for things to be something almost normal with his family. Through the Blood Moon, there's a ritual able to be done that will bring Kai back from the dead. And this is when Kai and Morro's relationship goes to shit. Kai has grown so deeply attached to Morro and Morro to him. They don't want to lose each other. But Kai is so desperate to be human, to have his family, to hug them and hold them, and be with them. So he pleads with Morro to join him, to take a second chance at life. And Morro refuses. Morro's been a ghost so many years and has finally found purpose and redemption as a guide in the Spectral Lands. He can't give everything up for Kai, and Kai can't give everything up for Morro. So there's now permanent damage to this bond they've grown and developed. They know that they're doomed, they know things will never be the same. But they know each other better than anyone--they know the other is stubborn, that neither of them let go when they're determined. So they realize that after the Blood Moon, things will never be the same.
Morro goes with Kai to the Blood Moon Ritual. His possessive side has showed itself again with Kai. He goes with the intention to drag Kai away because he's lost everything he's ever wanted his entire life; he doesn't want to lose Kai too. However, once they're actually there, there's a shift within Morro seeing Kai finally so close to having what he wants. But the Blood Moon ritual, Kai's had a shift too; for just a brief moment, Kai hesitates leaving Morro. They've grown so close; Morro understands him. Kai knows Morro will be alone again as soon as he regains humanity. And he hesitates. But they only have so much time, and Morro sees Kai's hesitation. So, before it's too late, Morro forces Kai through the portal type thing because he knows it would destroy Kai if he missed his one chance to be human. And Kai is resurrected, finally human once more, tackled into the biggest hug with his loved ones. But for Morro, things have gone wrong. His selfless action of pushing Kai through to humanity damages him because he got caught up in things. He doesn't become human like Kai, but he's not fully a ghost anymore either. Basically: body horror Morro. He's neither ghost nor human. Everything is wrong. His "body" is broken and hard to control. His brain got scrambled a bit, leading to patchy memories and memory loss. So, yeah, Morro cannot win ever.
Beyond this, there's not too much more. Morro perseveres and has to adjust to his new "body" and resumes his work in the Spectral Lands. Kai is human again, but he's fundamentally altered physically and mentally from all he's been through. Kai carries on as normal as can be, but he can't just forget what happened to him and between him and Morro. He sometimes sneaks out to the Spectral Lands, often just standing at the edge, not able to bring himself to fully go in. Other times he does see Morro, but they both know they can never go back. And Kai's relationships with the ninja, particularly Lloyd, are fundamentally changed through the experiences.
So yeah, that is a very rough intro to our Kai dies AU! There's some things not touched on here like how Cole interacts with Kai and Morro due to his ghost history and the prevailing symbol of oleander flowers and just all sorts of moments. But the post is ridiculously long, so I think this gets the bare bones across! If you've read the whole thing, thank you so much!
All posts about this AU will be tagged #Kai Dies Au if more is posted or reblogged on this account! Also I may or may not have a little something for this AU cooking... so yeah! TYSM!!! <3 and tysm to all my awesome friends who have been working on and contributing to and talking about the AU!

When you've been a writer for long enough, commas become more of a spiritual practice than a grammatical one.
Could I explain the actual rules of how they’re used? Absolutely not.
Do I rely on sensing a tremor in the force to tell me where to use them? Yes and this has never failed me even once.
