Things I’ve Learned After My First Semester at College
Hello I’m a dumbass bi who goes to the university of alabama and im here to share some words of wisdom (or maybe common sense that went over my head idk), partly for me to remember so I can give advice to my buds who are seniors in high school and partly because I remember searching for any info whatsoever about college during high school so here goes:
-FOR THE LOVE OF GOD GO TO CLASS! It’s hard to motivate yourself to go to things you really don’t wanna go to, especially since no one’s here to hold you accountable, but come finals week youre gonna wish you had.
-IF YOU’RE IN A BAD SITUATION, LEAVE! This applies to roommates, majors, professors, TAs, clubs, anything really. My first roommate was absolutely awful; she never cleaned or took out the trash, she left dirty dishes everywhere, she left smelly laundry all over the floor it was just a mess. If you don’t like your roommate or if your professor/TA is impossible to learn from, apply to switch rooms or transfer to a different class section! College doesn’t have to be more miserable than it needs to be.
-Ages 18-22 are the times when mental illness becomes most prominent. Also, suicide rates in teens skyrocket when they’re old enough to leave for college (17/18/19). If you notice anyone, including yourself, acting crazy let someone know! It can be your RA, it can be a mutual friend, it can be the health center, it can be the police just let someone know!!
-Speaking of, the day you move in, get the following contact info: number for the campus police, number for the health center, number for your building’s front desk, number for your RA, and the emails of ALL your professors and TAs.
-RateMyProfessor, GroupMe, and Mathway are your best friends!!
-While you still live at home, learn some skills that you’ll need when you live on your own. Learn how to do laundry, how to cook something besides kraft mac n cheese, how to clean a toilet, how to write a budget, how to use Excel, etc. A lot of this is a no-brainer, but a surprising amount of legal adults don’t know how to do some of these things. Don’t be one of those legal adults.
-ALWAYS HAVE A FIRST AID KIT ON HAND WITH THE FOLLOWING: Advil/ibuprofen, band-aids, tissues, multivitamins, Emergen-c, dayquil, hand sanitizer, thermometer, melatonin, Claritin/Mucinex/some kind of cold or allergy medicine. College kids get sick a LOT because a) the dining halls are petri dishes for bacteria and b) there’s students and faculty from all over the country living in the same area. You’re gonna come across germs that your immune system hasn’t seen yet, so getting sick will be inevitable.
-Before classes start, explore your new campus! Get a feel for the academic buildings, but also notice where convenience stores, dining halls, coffee shops, libraries, etc are.
-Keep in mind that more often than not, it takes college students a full semester to adjust, at least. You’ll have to deal with moving from family, possibly to another state, where you’ll know a select few people (or none at all), and being fully responsible for yourself. So when you get to college, you may be thinking that you made a mistake or that you don’t fit in. Give it time! You’ll more than likely adjust by the end of freshman year at the latest, and if not, there’s no shame whatsoever in transferring or just dropping out! No big!

the pressure to experience different things in high school is so dumb like that’s a super short period of your life lol you’ve got all the time in the world it literally doesn’t matter if you didn’t get laid in high school or if you’re 22 and haven’t had a girlfriend yet, you’ve probably got like 60+ years to do all that stuff THERES NO RUSH!!! Take your time!!! especially if you’re gay lmao most gays haven’t even figured themselves out when they’re 16, the idea that it’s weird to start dating for the first time after high school is straight propaganda

These bad ass derby photos are shattering stereotypes about female athletes
A healthy body is a strong body. That’s the message behind Cory Layman’s “Body by Derby” project, an inspiring collection of images of roller derby players. The project is proving that women of all shapes and sizes can be strong and powerful — no matter their body fat percentage.
There are 6 more of these — equally as awesome
