also: a dumb printing/cropping error. I didn’t realize the text was exactly one inch from the edge

finishing process (pt. 2)
some of the material process did run smoothly. a very kind friend of mine helped me with the cover, since I wanted to letterpress ‘my bible’, and she was in a letterpress class. we found a similar font, the shop had some gold ink, and the press worked well. I had a few tests prepared then printed the actual piece, which came out nicely.
since the pages are so thin, and I had separated the book into two stacks, piercing holes for sewing was pretty easy with my xacto blade. I did a double stitch with sewing thread to attach each section to the spine of a sturdy paper.
before gluing everything, I wanted to paint the edges in gold, so another friend lent me some gold acrylic. once again the paper demanded to make my life harder, and wouldn’t take the paint evenly, which caused some paint to end up on the face of the pages. at one point I was painting each page individually. when that was finally over, I glued the sturdy paper to the inside of the cover, and finished up the edges. because of all the glue, it didn’t lay very flat, so I placed a few heavy books on it for a day or so.
I was telling a friend: it was ironic, (and probably sinful) because throughout this all I was cursing so much over it, when the content is what it is. but holding it now, I am very grateful for everything, and content with finished piece.
thanks for reading,
-taylor

finishing process (pt. 1)
I have been mia lately with displaying the status of my book, but it’s been quite a week (or so).
I broke my phone, so I couldn’t take photos, and the entire process of printing was very frustrating. at least I had the content prepared in advance: I finished all the illustrations, inserted the verse index and intro page, and spell checked it around 10 times. you don’t realize how often you make spelling errors until you really read your own work word by word.
then material decisions: I bought black book cloth (they ran out of faux leather) and some bristol paper, then looked at page paper. originally, I thought an opaque paper that was off-white would help the cohesion between the gold and the black illustrations. but I fell in love with this japanese paper: it was thin, like real bible pages, a little warm in tint, with a perfect amount of tooth.
I bought every piece they had - which ended up being just enough, scarely so. then it was time to print. you could feed your own paper into the double-sided printers at the gd type shop, so I figured that was the best option. clearly the printer didn’t think so - I tried it two times, both times it jammed and ruined paper. i tried the hand feeder. also a fail, especially since i confused the printer into thinking there was a jam even after I removed all the paper. (not helping the reputation of illustration students in the gd type shop)
I eventually gave up, and decided to just do it the tedious but safe way - from my humble hp printer that prints one-sided. after rearranging the content to a saddle-stitch order, I sat down and got into the rhythm of printing each page, then feeding it back, then stacking it.
all for that thin, high-maintenance paper.

process
while I find out things that help my personal faith along the way, I’ve realized that I have a fairly regular system in creating my project, which doesn’t allow for a crazy amount of experimentation.
first, I skim through the book I’m focusing on, and mark any page that has a title or verse that catches my eye. then, I return to those, and prioritize the most visual one. I sketch out 2-3 options, finishing one but not too finished. then I revisit the verse again, and consider my drawing to form what I will write. sometimes it’s more a question, sometimes it’s a restatement of the text in my own words; both ways, I try to connect it to the audience through language or reference. then it all gets digitized. I take a crappy phone photo so I can trace it into photoshop and arrange it with the text.
also, note: because of time limitations, I will be interpreting only the Old Testament. I hope to return the New Testament during the summer.

beginning
In the beginning I decided that I am in a part of my life
part of the typical US student’s life
that is void of spirituality
specifically
christian spirituality.
sure, there are many christians here, or
so I’ve heard.
this is college, liberal college, it’s not strange to me
that christianity is characterized and cut
away from the work place. I
understand the adverse (to say the least) experiences that
many students have had with it.
so anyways
I’m a junior now =
I don’t care as much, and decided to do
a project that will cause me to remember
my spirituality.
this series will be formed by reading through scripture and picking out verses that I find meaningful personally, illustrating it and accompanying it with my own writings. this is not meant to be the “correct” way to read the bible, but simply an interpretation that some people may find relatable. It also is not meant as the epitome of what christianity looks like. I’m a human.
thanks for reading,
- taylor
