“Four?”
It came out quietly, and tinted with confusion. There was no expectation of an answer just yet.
He had known that Wash survived, that much he’d learned when scanning the radios for Carolina. He’d known Tex was alive, but she didn’t seem the type to group up with other Freelancers. She’d only come to him when she needed help. So. That still left the question of who else it could be.
And there came the apologies again. That was something they would have to talk about.
“I know. And. It's still okay.”
“Yeah well, that’s a long story for another time. Plus, you could only imagine who else is alive and waiting York. So, no one will die, and maybe JUST maybe, the four of us can be back together, and there wont have to be anymore ghosts for awhile.” Her back was still turn to him. She didn’t want to look, it was painful. Years of pondering, wondering if she could ever feel the same way again. She knew she lost one family already, and losing another wasn’t the plan. Not today. Though, it seems like her old family is coming back, first North and now York. She’s been with Wash for so long it’s good to see both of them. Inhaling a deep breath, she just, needed to make sure of something. To make sure this wasn’t in her head. So all the sudden, she turned around and made her way to him. To his arms and hugged him. They where in the middle of WAR and the one of the first things she wanted to do was to hug me. “I’m still sorry York. Just, sorry.”

“Guess it’s a day for ghosts, then.”
He knew what echos from the past showing up was like. When it had happened to him, well... The outcome hadn’t been one he’d enjoyed. It was pretty painful, actually. And this? This definitely hurt, but not quite in the same way. It hurt in the way dreams you’d long since forgotten hurt when dragged back into the light.
“I’ve gotta admit, I’m pretty curious as to how you got yourself all wrapped up in this mess, so. Yeah. I won’t die. Not when you’re just in arm’s reach again.”
There’s a time and a place for letting go. This isn’t it.
“You’re right..and there is someone from my pass who wants my head but I just– you better be around. After seeing you I just– don’t… I don’t want to loose you AGAIN.” He did know her, too well still. It seems maybe she hasn’t change to much but she has grown. And she knew things would never be the same again, though, and if everything goes right after this and both of them survive..they could talk and fix the broken pieces they had. “Just, I know how much it hurts you and I want to make it up to you. So don’t…don’t get hurt again. Please…I have..so much to tell you.” Carolina turn her back to him, helmet in hand, though, an unexpected tear fell from her. Hopefully he didn’t see it. ‘Lina took a breath before turning back around again. “Just don’t die.”

“I know. And. It’s okay.”
His words were soft. He’d had ample time to think about all of it. He’d been angry for a long time, at a lot of different people. And he’d been sad for longer than that. Bitter, too. But he had long since forgiven her. It hadn’t been her fault. The question was if she’d learned to forgive herself yet.
“You should go fight this fight. If I know you, and I’m pretty sure I still do, you’re probably right at the center of this whole mess. Just. Don’t walk away this time. I’ll still be around when the smoke clears. It won’t be the first time I’ve switched to the right side. Maybe not event he last.”
“I– right. I do. I just—” She hesitated for a moment. These emotions, something she hasn’t felt in YEARS.And now all the sudden, seeing him after this long she almost forgot about the war. Just for this moment, something something good came along and well.. it made her hopeful for once.. Though, she couldn’t tell from him. With the words he was saying, was he trying to leave? Maybe it was best if she just..walked away. Or maybe.. “I could walk away right now and fight this fight, but… I just, I just— want to say… I’m so sorry, you were right all this time.. I’m so sorry York– so.. sorry Emery.”

“Honestly? I thought I’d died for a long time too. But.”
He shrugs then, taking a careful step forward. Carolina looks.... tired. Which would make sense, he knows exactly the kind of hell they’ve been raining down upon the planet. He hadn’t really put much thought into it, considering it had been this or death. But this would be an out. It’d be easy to slip back off the radar at a time like this. It’d be good too, to be around someone he actually likes again.
“You probably have somewhere to be, don’t you? Big fight and all.”
This was Battle, but he took his helmet off. Brave and stupid as always. Though, hesitantly taking steps forward, as she just, looked at him. “Emery…” Carolina whispered, stopping only mere steps in front of him. She was, somewhat relieved to see him. After that Delta and Epsilon told her. She was sure he was dead. Though, inhaling and exhaling, in exchange Carolina took off her helmet. Emerald eyes shined as she looked at him.
“I can’t even. After what Delta and Epsilon told me. SHOWED me, I was sure you where dead.”

“Yeah. I am dead. Legally anyway.”
Maybe that wasn’t the best thing for him to say right then. It was a little too late to take it back. It’s not like he was just going to say that he spent so long just waiting on some sign, that relief that she was okay was still flooding into him, or that he’d turn coat for her in a split second.
Carolina just stood there. Her eyes HAD to be lying to her. It couldn’t be him. No– it couldn’t. She heard the recordings. Delta even told her he was—gone. No, this could be him. Not him– not HER Emery. He was gone and she moved on– she.. Carolina took a deep breath as she looked at his face. Unless she was dreaming she could tell from his eyes– well, eye that it was him. The same scar, same look on his face– just.. “Of course I’m alive but you’re dead.. What the fuck is going on– I– What?”

“You’re alive.”
It seemed like an obvious thing to say, because of course she was alive. She was standing right in front of him. He’s just... spent so much time waiting on some sign that she was okay. And, granted, being on Chorus in it’s present state wasn’t great, but it was still better than dead.
Clearly, though, she didn’t recognize him. That was easy enough to fix. Dangerous to fix in the middle of a battlefield, but easy. Off came his helmet, which of course he promptly dropped to the ground, still a little shocked that his Carolina was standing right there.
She stopped. No one knew that. No one other then Wash and North that she knew from her past that was alive knew her real name and they promised never to speak it. “What did you just say?” Maybe she was hearing things? Her name was close to Carolina maybe it was a mistake. Though that voice- something struck her. “I don’t know what you are trying to pull but I ain’t having it.”

That voice. He hadn’t heard it in a long time. The color of the armor had struck an old chord with him, a painful one. But after all this time he hadn’t dared to think. The pure shock of it makes him start to drop his position, which is breaking rule number one of combat.
“Caroline?”
“You need to stand down now. I don’t want to kill you, but if I have to. I will.” She said in a firm voice, Standing her ground at the space pirate who attacked her. She didn’t want to take bodies, but if she had to, she would. She was only after one, and he was just getting in her way, though, there was something about this one who gave her chills. “Get out of my way. I don’t have time for this.”

Then you don’t have to choose if you wanna deal with it. Though, you can’t give beard burn which is definitely the major upside.
I couldn’t grow a beard if I tried, though. Not enough testosterone and all.

It’s a lot more work than it seems. There’s a reason I usually don’t have one.
At least you guys can grow a beard.
