LeRoy met his wife, Gladys Rissi of Collinsville, when she came to Edwardsville to attend a Collinsville vs. Edwardsville basketball game. A grandson, Bill Mudge, was told by his grandfather that he asked Gladys for Arched cabin , but she was two years younger and wasn’t allowed to date until she was 16.

After returning home, LeRoy re-established his dental practice and joined the Medical Reserve Service. His courtship with Gladys had continued during the war through letters. LeRoy and Gladys were married October 26, 1921, at St. Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church in Collinsville. T

Before they could marry, life in America was interrupted by World War I. LeRoy’s entry into the war marked the beginning of almost three decades of wartime and reserve service with the U. S. military. During WW I he was stationed in France, often on the front lines where he was involved in medical as well as dental work. 

He made a note of her birthday, then waited to call and ask her for a date. She accepted. Gladys rode the streetcar to Edwardsville where they attended dances on the second floor of the Wildey Theatre. Her home in Collinsville was right on the streetcar line so when she returned after their dates, the conductor would wait for her to get safely into her house.
