One More Thing...
Thank you all who participated in this contest. I had a ton of fun hosting it. Though perhaps not as many votes as I had been hoping for, it was still a blast and I'm grateful for those who followed these polls.
And who knows? Maybe I'll revisit this and do this again sometime.

And the Winner Is…
Tumblr media
Nirvana - In Utero
“If Nevermind's polished sound was a glorious blaze in a candle factory,” writes Apple Music, “In Utero's [sound] was a grease fire on a blackened stove.” After Nevermind sent shockwaves across the music world, it was clear Nirvana had arrived at a crossroads. With all eyes now on them, the band turned to producer Steve Albini for their follow-up record. And the rest is history.
The album wastes no time acclimating listeners to its abrasive sound with the opener “Serve the Servants.” It’s on “Scentless Apprentice,” however, that the band kicks into full gear; the wall of noise engulfing everything except Cobain’s dry rasps punishing the ears in a sonic onslaught. “Heart-Shaped Box” mends together the group’s alternative sensibilities with the pop flair they displayed on Nevermind; the riff to “Rape Me” echoes that of “Teen Spirit” to the tune of Cobain’s potent lyricism lamenting his newfound high profile and the baggage that came with it.
The band takes a quick detour with the chamber pop cut “Dumb,” featuring a mellow, if abstract, introspection into what Cobain construes as blissful ignorance or just plain happiness. Just as quickly as it disappeared, the abrasion rears its ugly head on the groovy “Very Ape” and the simultaneously vulnerable and dominating “Milk It,” featuring solid drums from Dave Grohl.
“Pennyroyal Tea” conjures images of a “Leonard Cohen afterworld” and provides a peek into Cobain’s drab and dreary mind; “I’m so tired I can’t sleep,” he admits in an almost resigned manner. The closer, “All Apologies,” tugs at the heartstrings as what proved to be Nirvana’s swan song sees Cobain and company express a forlorn sense of self against the backdrop of arguably the rawest emotional performance Nirvana ever put to tape.
“In Utero is a lot of things — brilliant, corrosive, engaged and thoughtful, most of them all at once,” David Fricke wrote for Rolling Stone. “But more than anything, it’s a triumph of the will.”
Congratulations, In Utero!
