Betrayed
In the story afraid by jeffrey deaver, The story begins with the girl named marissa. Marissa used to be a fashion designer but then she was forced to work at a family business, Marissa met Antonio in an art gallery. When she met Antonio took marissa to his vacation house, Antonio showed Marissa how it feels to be afraid, And it made Marissa more alive. Marissa learned that Antonio was trying to help her, He knows that facing a lot of stuff like her father has been oppressing her, along with her ex-husband. After that marissa was left with the decisions she should make. The story "Afraid" made by Jeffery Deaver has a lot of mysteries and it drives readers to read more. Jeffery Deaver was born on may 6, 1950 in Chicago, Illinois, His books are sold in 150 countries, He also has three lifetime achievement awards.
The match went out, and darkness surrounded her. Marissa collapsed on the floor in panic, sobbing. What a fool I’ve been, she thought. . . . I'll die here.
Antonio’s reason to “help” Marissa in an unexpected way.
Context for the quote, Antonio.Marissa is confused about what is happening and why, she is trying to understand the situation she is in.“As a child I spent much time in loneliness and boredom. I immersed myself in the books of great writers of horror. They were terrifying, yes, but they also exhilarated me. I would see an audience watching a horror film and think:
They are scared but they are alive.” -Antonio (Afraid by Jeffrey Deaver)The quote being said by Antonio is strange, because it was his reason to help people feel alive. First, to get Marissa’s trust and to know more about her. Marissa then finds out she was pranked and it was all an act. She was betrayed by Antonio. The character Antonio made me think that there are some people who might have a good intention but not in a way you would imagine how they would help. Yes, fear makes us feel alive, all the confusion and connecting the situations trying to understand what happened, thinking of all the possible outcomes will indeed make your heartbeat fast, hence making us feel alive.

Melissa, after receiving the “help” of Antonio, is still coping with what has happened while sitting on the side of the beach, listening to the waves and gases on the stars. Furious, tearful, quivering, Marissa walked to a stone bench at the edge of the water. She sat and breathed deeply, clutching the note in one hand, the phone in the other. Her eyes rose, gazing at the stars. Suddenly she blinked, startled. A large bat, a dark shape in the darker sky, zigzagged overheard in a complex yet elegant pattern. Marissa stared at it intently until the creature vanished over the trees. This proves that even after the wrong choices you make you need to think ahead and make sure what happens doesn't happen again. With Malissa still coping with what just happened to her and clutching the note she was given 3 choices and she could freely make her own decision but she has to decide if this choice she chose would be a good one or a horrible one.
I think the author chose an interesting ending making us think that she would choose a different choice then suddenly choosing another which means that with her first choice she didn’t think through it properly and chooses another number instead and it’s been like that she chose Antonio without thinking over it. Each decision she made, she made it while being afraid for her life. She desperately clung to the hope that she would survive. Doing exactly what Antonio knew she would do. Even after all of that her first choice though we do not know what it was she doubted it and changed her mind. At the beginning she was shown to be bored of her life and lack of fulfillment it gave her. But now she realized what her worth was. The text is important because it holds on to a foundation on what makes us human. The thing that drives us emotions, status, and etc.
