On the other side of his apartment the light flickered, turning on for a moment before flickering out again. At least Milas's other good friend, the television, helped him out. The glow from the screen illuminated enough of the room for him to find a slice of pizza in the box beside him. A piece of pepperoni landed on his chest, leaving a trail of grease behind as it slid down his stomach. Milas left it there, and stuffed the rest of the pizza slice into his mouth. 

The face on the television stared right at him, catching him the act, and appearing like one of those pictures where the eyes follow you when you move. There was something about her that Milas couldn’t quite place. He’d seen Ambrosia van Aster before.

While she talked to Thames, Milas sat at his desk and looked her up in the system, but the [redacted] database had no information about Amy, nor anyone with the van Aster name. Maybe he’d once seen her at some fancy event his parents once forced him to attend, back when they could force him to attend things. That was a long time ago but he had a good memory for recognising a pretty face.

Except that time he flirted with a young woman at the bar, and asked her name, not realising his date from the week before had a new haircut. Milas rubbed his cheek, feeling the sting from the slap Protea thwacked across his face. Shit, that happened with Frangipani too. He rubbed the other side in solidarity.

I don't know how to fix this. I wasn't there…

I don't have any memories of what she went through. I can't do anymore than what I'm already doing. I'm not her… maybe I was but not now. You're the one who has to let it go… not me. I hold no ill will
