Why 2

To @mysensitiveside , I promise I���m working on completing your gift with all due speed and conviction, and to prove it, here is another small piece of the tale. I’m getting closer to the end (in increments), close and closer. And, speaking of close and closer, you’ll find that Myka and Helena are too… this picks up right where part 1 of this AU tale left off, with Myka hoping in a park.

Why 2

Myka scanned the park. She told herself—and yet tried not to tell herself—that if she had to walk alone this week, that would be a definitive sign. Clarity: they weren’t coming back.

“You aren’t a walker,” she said aloud. You weren’t a walker, hope reprimanded.

Could she resign herself to continuing to perform this signifying ritual?

As she began walking, the answer became clear… yes. She could, and she would, and walking wasn’t much, as far as rituals went, but it beat going home at midday for a solitary sandwich. No one was going to appear in her apartment, regardless of how much faith she manifested. In a park, though, anything could happen.

The Proposal (Part Two)

“Marry me?”

Helena’s hand slid into her pocket, grasping hold of the ring. The television remote was in her other hand, Claudia had assured that no modern proposal was complete without lights and music. They’d spent the afternoon putting together a technical extravaganza on the computer. Helena didn’t know whether to be disturbed or pleased that Claudia could access so many photographs of them. She’d known about the shared team facebook group but had considered it a curiosity, and hadn’t checked it in some time, the internet really was a marvel.

However, in all her planning Helena had failed to take into account this - Myka down on one knee, the open ring box in her hand.

“Oh darling,” Helena breathed. She withdrew the ring from her pocket, holding it carefully between two fingers. Myka’s eyes widened. “That was going to be my question.”

Myka laughed and rose to her feet. Helena tossed the remote onto the sofa, Myka did the same with the ring box and then held out her hand. Helena gently pushed the ring onto her finger, and then Myka grasped her hand and did the same. Myka had a giddy grin on her face and Helena couldn’t help but lean forward and kiss her. Myka responded enthusiastically, and Helena reached up to cup her face.

Nothing could spoil this moment.

About Image Descriptions

Hi everyone! It came to my attention as I started reblogging your wonderful gifts yesterday that there isn’t currently a strong tradition in this fandom of providing image descriptions. I don’t know that it’s a strong tradition in any fandom, and I’d love to encourage B&W to be a leader in this.

So what are image descriptions? They’re short paragraphs that factually describe the content of an image for the benefit of blind and visually impaired internet citizens, particularly those who use screen readers. Screen readers can’t understand images, but they can read the text of an image description if it’s available.

There are so many talented artists in this fandom, and this exchange has featured at least 6 gifts with images. I’d love to make that art accessible to everyone by encouraging artists (or fans of those artists, where appropriate) to add image descriptions to their gifts, as well as future posts.

Hello @ivi-under-the-stars!  Happy Bering-and-Wells-mas!

I had a lot of fun researching chess and its history, which I knew little about (thank you!). And I thought about what chess might mean to Helena. She’s a brilliant mind of course, an adept solver of puzzles. And chess is often spoken of in terms of strategy, tactics, battle, war.  But the more I thought about chess and its place in Helena’s life, the more I gravitated toward a perhaps less obvious aspect of chess - that it can be, like many games, a way to connect with other people. (Maybe I also went this direction because of the stresses of the past year). 

The Helena we see in the show is often isolated, set apart from those around her by her nefarious plans, or the fact of her existence far outside her original time, or being trapped in the Regents’ Poké ball. She has been running up against (and finding ways around) social barriers her whole life. So I wanted to show her at rest, enjoying a moment with a mentor and friend.  This type of photograph would most likely have been staged in a studio of some kind - it’s not quite a candid shot. I, too, am weak for the dapper HG look.

Now, I know there’s no apparent Bering in this Bering and Wells gift. I envisioned Myka finding this photograph while doing inventory in the HG Wells aisle and taking it to Helena to get the full story - only to find Helena concentrating at another game of chess, making her move on Artie’s board while he’s off on a retrieval. I can see Myka pausing to enjoy the sight, a soft smile gracing her features, before she interrupts Helena with her find.

I hope you are having an enjoyable Valentine’s Day and that this year brings you lots of good things and connection with good people.

Why

I want to wish a very happy Gift Exchange Day to @mysensitiveside ​ ! This gift, a short and sweet AU, will keep on giving for a while, in that I wasn’t able to fling the whole thing across the finish line for you today. (No surprise, I’m sure, given my posting pace over the past… um… some time.) A second part will appear sooner rather than later, however, and I hope that the whole thing will be to your liking. Thanks of course go to @kla1991 for the organization of the whole  @bering-and-wells-exchange extravaganza… and I do just want to say that, as for my own reasons (reasons as such being quite relevant to this story) I still love Myka and Helena, and everybody in this bar, very much.

Why

“Why are you here?” Myka Bering asked of the dog she discovered in the hallway, gazing up at her, when she opened the door of her apartment one Saturday morning.

The dog blinked.

“Aren’t you Sam’s dog?”

The dog blinked again.

Things happen for a reason.

Myka had always been sure of that. So much so that it had shaped her idea of heaven: surely, the experience of paradise was nothing more, less, or other than finally being in possession of all the reasons.

Happy BeringWells-entines @kloperslegend! I will follow this up with fiction at a future date. Just wanted to get these ladies into the sunshine to combat all of the cold absolutely everywhere.

Happy Bering and Wells Day! @sistersin7 was kind enough to give me free reign for the @bering-and-wells-exchange this year, so I started thinking about this opera AU I read a while back (Stages, by @msdaphnefielding on AO3, for the curious). And then I didn’t stop thinking about B&W: The Opera, so here are the ladies in period-ish dress.

Happy B&W Gift Exchange day, @bluelemma ! You requested something with a family vibe that included Christina, and this was the first thing that popped into my head. I hope it hits the spot!

The story posted above ^^^ is loosely formatted as a video shot list (readability won over authenticity), in the style of videos made by “The Dodo - For Animal People.” If you’re not familiar, they often chronicle a pet’s growth/recovery after being rescued. Many a heartstring is tugged, but there’s always an upbeat ending. Their imagery/storylines focus on the animals, but my version veers into the personal, because, well, fan fiction! During lockdown, I watched tons of their videos as their message of hope and caring was what I needed to see.  

This is in the Warehouse universe but canon divergent, following the popular, “H.G. comes back in mid-Season Four, and she and Myka become a couple almost immediately.” Though not mentioned here, Leena is not dead. And let’s imagine Abigail joins them anyway, as they all need a large dose of therapy.  

As for Christina’s return, well…here’s how I see it: in Season Two, before H.G. went nuclear on the world, she scoured lists of post-W12 artifacts, piecing together new schemes to bring Christina back. When nothing worked, her “ending the world” plot went into full swing, and we all know what happened after that. Fast-forward to post-Season Four-ish, while H.G. was doing inventory one day, Christina magically appeared out of nowhere. Artie was furious, but H.G. insisted she’d done nothing wrong, erm…recently, that it must be a past transgression materialized. According to Mrs. Frederic, there was nothing to be done except accept it and move on. Myka thinks it was a parting gift from her before she stepped down as Caretaker, but she’d never say it out loud 

This tale is set a few years after Christina’s arrival and ends in late Fall of 2020.
