Summer is Heating Up in Tahoe and so are Water Temperatures
Summer in Tahoe means fishing time! The weather has been great for the summer as it usually is, and with a bunch of sunshine in the forecast we are still enjoying the great outdoors. We are also seeing highs in the 90 range which isn’t anything out of normal, but that combined with a low snow pack has our waters warming up throughout the day. We always recommend carrying a stream thermometer for bug activity but we also advise everyone to take temps as you are fishing to best protect our wild trout population. If you see reading of 65 degrees or higher then it is time to call it a day. Some rivers have been more susceptible to water temp changes like the Truckee and East Walker so take a bit more caution. Fish early in the morning and get off the water by noon to help avoid any issues with fish mortality.
Not all of our rivers have been impacted by the warm temps as others. The West Walker, East Carson and West Carson Rivers have help good temps longer than others. They can still get a little warm so bring the thermometer and check if you don’t know.
Our bigger lakes like Caples Lake, Echo Lakes, and Spooner Lake have still been fishing well. The fish seem to be moving down to cooler water during the day but can still be caught from shore early in the morning and late in the evening. Float tubes or small water crafts are your best bet if you want to be most affective on any of our lakes. Good time of year to take a hike into desolation and enjoy a little solitude.
We have seen good PMD and Caddis hatches about everyday on all of our waters. Golden stones are starting to move around and fish have noticed. Midges are an everyday occurrence as always in the Sierras. Make sure you have plenty of selection for flies as the hatches have been thinning and the fish tend to key in a bit more on one food source.
We have seen more fish moving into fast water so tightening or Euro nymphing has been an effective way to get your flies down to the fish, but don’t neglect the hopper/dropper setup either. We have seen some fish moving for hoppers as well as eating the nymph.

Reasons to Attend the 2020 Tahoe/Truckee Area Guide School
There are the obvious reasons for attending our guide school. Maybe you want to start guiding in California, Nevada, Alaska, etc. immediately. Maybe you would like an excuse to get on the water and have the option to guide one day. You may see yourself helping veterans with disabilities, children less fortunate, or other great organizations one day. Turneffe Flats – Tahoe Fly Fishing Outfitters
Part 2 – Fishing at Turneffe Flats
This is the second installment of our blog from my recent trip to Turneffe Flats Resort. You can read the fist part here. My saltwater fly fishing to date has been primarily for bonefish in the Bahamas. Our trip to Belize gave us the chance at permit, as well as bones. We were not there during peak tarpon season but there are resident tarpon that reside around the atoll year round so we hoped to also get a few shots at those elusive species. Over the course of 6 days of fishing we were pleasantly surprised at the number of fish we saw within legitimate casting range.
Picky Permit
Turneffe Flats is world famous for permit fishing and this was the species we came primarily to target. Permit are notoriously picky eaters and some of the most difficult fish to catch on a fly. Many people can go years before actually catching a permit. Getting a legitimate shot at a permit is half the battle.
On our first morning of fishing, also my wife’s birthday, we were getting ready to fish when a school of permit appeared in the distance. After some quick coaching, rushing and fumbling to get everything ready, my wife caught her first permit on the third cast. It seemed way too easy – and it was. We had many more shots at permit over the course of the trip, but that ultimately was the only one landed in the boat. The addiction was fueled, however, and that is what keeps us coming back.
Bones on the Brain
As mentioned, we came to Turneffe Flats to target permit. However, the number of bonefish we had shots at, and caught, was surprising. I had always heard that Belize did not have the number of bones that can be found in the Bahamas. From what I saw, I am not sure I agree.
On our trip, bones were the “consolation prize” for when we couldn’t find (or catch) permit. We did spend part of a day walking a flat targeting bones and caught a ridiculous number of them. However, most of our time was spent poling in a flats boat. When we saw tails, we would switch rods and catch a few bones.
The other major difference from the Bahamas is in the size of fly we used. The typical bonefish patterns work in Belize, but the flies need to be smaller – primarily size 6 and 8 flies. This does not mean that the bonefish are smaller than in the Bahamas, just more “dainty” eaters.
For someone new to saltwater fly fishing that wants to start with bonefish, Turneffe Flats offers a great opportunity.
Other Species at Turneffe Flats
While permit and bonefish were our focus, there are other species that can be targeted with a fly rod. We got a few shots at resident tarpon. There are also opportunities for snook, barracuda, triggerfish and other species. It really comes down to how you want to spend your day and if the season is prime (especially for tarpon). If you get there and decide to target a different species than planned, Turneffe Flats has gear you can rent, if needed.
The Saltwater Addiction
For those new to saltwater fly fishing, it is more like hunting than fishing. You can spend hours walking flats or poling in a flats boat looking for fish. Once spotted, it can be a mad rush to get organized, cast and hope the fish eats the fly. It can be very frustrating at times, but, once you hook that first saltwater fish, it becomes a full -fledged addiction and you will spend the entire plane ride home planning the next saltwater fly fishing trip. As we found, Turneffe Flats offers expert anglers through beginners an amazing fishing experience. We hope you come join us for our next hosted trip.

Turneffe Flats – Tahoe Fly Fishing Outfitters
Return to Hosted Travel
Tahoe Fly Fishing Outfitters is currently reinvigorating its hosted travel business. Turneffe Flats in Belize is definitely a trip at the top of the travel list. Over the years, Victor has hosted several trips to Turneffe Flats. After telling me about the great fishing, lodge, staff and food, I had to experience it for myself.
I booked a trip for myself and my wife this past November to Turneffe Flats for a week of saltwater fly fishing. The trip definitely exceeded our expectations. The fishing and guides were fantastic and the lodge is a first-rate operation. For those wanting to diversify their experience, it also offers several activities other than fly fishing – snorkeling, eco tours, diving and site-seeing in Belize City.
We are excited to share this opportunity with others, by again hosting trips to this destination. We have secured dates for a Tahoe Fly Fishing Outfitters hosted trip October 24-31st, 2020.

Part 1 – Getting to Turneffe Flats
Getting there is relatively easy as there are direct flights to Belize City from multiple US cities. One of the key aspects of a trip to Turneffe Flats is that you must be on the ground in Belize City by 3:30pm in order to make the transfer boat from Belize City. Most trips to Turneffe Flats are for 7 nights/6 days and run Saturday to Saturday. They only run one boat on Saturday afternoon so travelers need to be aware of that schedule and plan accordingly. In the event the boat is missed, there is a hotel at the marina and the option to ride the guide boat, or a private water taxi.
Arrival in Belize City
It seems like you can’t have a multi-flight trip these days without a delay at some point. While on our layover in Dallas we watched our flight departure continue to push back. The potential of missing the boat started to look inevitable. Fortunately, we were able to land in Belize City with just enough time. Once we made it through one of the slowest Customs I’ve experienced, a lodge employee promptly met us outside the airport and took us to the marina (a short 30-minute bus ride). For future trips I would seriously consider an earlier arrival. Another option is to stay an extra few days and see some of the additional sites near Belize City (more on that later…..)
Boat Ride to Turneffe Flats
The boat trip to the resort is a 90-minute ride on a 48 foot boat. The boat travels through offshore cayes, the Barrier Reef, open ocean and then through the interior lagoon to the resort. The portion on open ocean can be rough so travelers that are susceptible to sea-sickness should plan accordingly. We did experience some rough water on the way over, but once you are past the reef the seas calmed down and it was very pleasant. As the sun started to set, we passed through various mangrove lined channels in the atoll. As darkness began to cover the sea we came around the final corner to see the lodge ahead.

Fly Fishing Report August 2019
Summer has finally begun and is in full force. The weather is getting warmer and flows are coming down on all of the rivers. With the warm weather and lower flows comes warmer water temperatures so be sure to look for faster water in the lower rivers and watch the temps as the mornings progress. We are focusing on the morning and evenings and leaving many of the rivers alone during the hotter part of the day.
The East Carson flows have finally come down and the water is a good color. Most of the river is fishing well right now. Stonefly, caddis, and general attractor nymphs have been productive and streamers can still work in the deep pools. Look for dry fly action with hoppers and caddis later in the day.
The West Carson flows are quickly dropping so the deep pockets and holes are the most productive. Dry droppers have been working as well, so has single dry flies during the early morning and late evening hours. Stimulators, caddis and hoppers are all good dry fly patterns to try right now.
We haven’t been fishing the East or West Walker much just yet. It is still pretty hot on the East Walker and flows are holding around 330cfs. This is a great river and one of our favorites for the fall once the temps and flows come down a bit.
The Truckee continues to fish well this summer but the focus needs to be on the early morning and evening hours. With the recent warm weather we’ve been having, the water temps are getting high during the middle part of the day. During the dog days of summer we strive to avoid fishing during the middle part of the day to help relieve pressure on the fish. Nymphing has been the most productive in the deeper pools with caddis, midges, small mayfly and stonefly patterns being successful. Dry droppers can be productive in the shallower runs, especially later in the day. Make sure you have a good variety of bugs as the hatches can be a little different every day.
The Little Truckee has been at a good flow but has been getting heavy fishing pressure this summer. In these situations it’s a good reminder about fishing etiquette. Always ask which way someone is working if you plan on stepping in above or below another angler. Kindness goes a lot further than the alternative attitude. If you decide to fish up there please be respectful to other anglers! We are all out there to enjoy the fishing and nothing can ruin a day faster than an argument over fishing etiquette. Caddis, a variety of mayflies, and midges are on the menu as usual. Once again go armed with plenty of bugs in the box!

This is a great class that is focused on learning more about teaching fly fishing to others, as well as becoming better anglers. Spring has sprung in Lake Tahoe
A quick look at the 10 day forecast for the Lake Tahoe and Truckee Area have all the staff excited here at Tahoe Fly Fishing Outfitters. It looks like the weather is going to be nice with the exception of this weekend and its time to hit the rivers and lakes, at least those that aren’t still frozen.
One beautiful thing about spring is big bugs show up and how don’t have to fish size a tandem nymph rig 18 and smaller to hook a fish. Skawlas are out and the fish always take note of such a large meal, not that you shouldn’t still be fishing a smaller BWO or midge pattern behind it or off a tag. Don’t be afraid to go big on your stones.
The flows are high as we have had a great winter with plenty of precipitation, but we still have opportunities to hit the water. The Truckee River is 2000+ CFS and even higher below Boca Inlet. The East Walker is a steady 300 CFS. High water can scare some away from fishing or frustrate those that do try their hand at it. This is the perfect time to give us a call at the shop so we can set up with one of our guides that understands how to fish high flows and where the fish should be holding.

Lake Tahoe area fly fishing update 6/9/2018
We are having a blast right now, fishing is really picked up the last week or so. Starting down south the East Walker is back down to about 400cfs and very fishable. Streamers, nymphing under indicator, and some dry fly action in the evening I’m sure will all produce at these flows. Word is there are some big big browns being caught lately. I drove over the West Walker a few days ago and although it’s still a bit high and a little off color nymphing the slow froggy water with big attractor nymphs Would be my go to. Up on the Carsons the East is absolutely fishable just maybe not crossable at these flows similar to the West Walker nymphing and streamers in the slow froggy stuff is the go to until she drops a bit more. The West Carson is absolutely the place to be on the South Shore rite now with all tactics taking fish. A few years of good flows and we are seeing more quality fish again besides just the fresh stockers. Unfortunately the regulations are still set up as a catch and keep fishery and the quality will go down hill through out the summer but bows a great time to go poke around one of our prettiest rivers. Up in my backyard The Big and Little Truckee are as good as it gets overall it’s still fishing and everyday is a bit different but overall we have all the normal players for this time of year. Evening dry fly action on PMD’s and caddis, our mid day flying ants and of course the dirty old incator. Our private Sawmill Lake is also very good right now. A bonus this year is also the South Fork of the Yuba which literally flows through my backyard. Good flows and early stocking thanks to the community of Kingvale has really got it going. Kingvale is absolutely private property and off limits but there is plenty of public access down the old 40 after Kingvale exit. Another one of our prettiest rivers in the area worth fishing. There are also countless smaller streams and stillwater options to explore. If you are interested in getting off the beaten trail a bit call the shop and book a trip! Let’s do this!
Nothing but good news here folks! We are ready to do this for sure. Great fishing is already happening all up and down the Sierra. We have had some outstanding days on everything from the East Walker to Little Truckee and everywhere in between. We have still got a snowpack up high which will keep river flows great until August if not through the hole dang summer. A bit of unsettled weather and cloud cover this past week has kept the run off to a minimum lately. Looking at the ten day forecast it seems summer is about to be full swing next week. Watch stream flows on the East Carson as she is very temperamental when it comes to runoff and small rises can blow it out. Also continued dam work on Stampede could still lead to inconsistent releases on the Little Truckee. Personally the thing I am most excited for is the return of great fishing on the East Fork of the Walker River. This tailwater fishery can be world class! And I mean world class, big bruiser browns eating large dry flys. It may still be a few good water years before it is fully back in shape but everything I have heard suggests it is trending the right direction. Our guide Jason Shaw has devoted a ton of time down there this year already and I can’t wait to get out there with him soon. The Walker flows through both California and Nevada, public and private waters and we can guide it all! If you have never fished it or it has been a while give us a call and lets do this! Fly Fishing Guide School 2018 in the Truckee/Tahoe area!
Quick update, two weeks out and we still have a few openings for Guide School 2018. If you have an interest in becoming a fly fishing guide here in the greater Truckee/Tahoe area, Alaska, the West etc. and or working for an outfitter, shop or guide group I do not know of any that do not require some type of guides school to have been accomplished. There is the ability to start off as an independent guide but is always tough getting permits and or clients while competing against someone that has been to a guides school. It is not a requirement to attain a guides license but helpful getting a start in the industry. Tahoe Fly Fishing Outfitters for one will not hire a guide until they have taken a guides school here in the Tahoe area or at one of many across our country. We are not the only Outfitter that runs a Guides school but we are the only guides school as complete and affordable in the West. We concentrate on teaching Walk/Wade guiding and our school includes two additional days of shadowing one of our guides on an actual guided trip.
