this is huge. don’t get me wrong, both shows are amazing and I know it’s not a competition, but the fact a show with queer romance as its main storyline, that hardly got any promo from HBO Max, managed to top a big Disney/Marvel show proved people want actual LGBTQ representations that couldn’t be edited out or completely dismissed by skipping 6 seconds forward.

With a lot of the other stuff I’ve done, it’s just been a cameo or something short. You just walk [in and out] of one scene… Eking this out over the six episodes that I’m in, it was great to have the time to set up the relationship. We were building and building and building to that moment on the beach and yeah, it was really fun.

it’s jokes on here but rly truly genuinely the thing u like abt taika’s core affect has always been his māori-ness. what ur perceiving in his comedy and writing and emotional beats and exploration of masculinity and general clown shit is peak pasifika. not that islanders have the monopoly on his tone but. since 2 cars 1 night, eagle vs shark, flight of the conchords, boy, hunt for the wilderpeople, what we do in the shadows, our flag means death etc. he has never not been a māori eccentric making distinctly happy-sad dramedies born out of māori boyhood and the cadence of nz aoteoroa village kid humor like. that is an islander doing bits at ur aunty’s funeral if i ever saw one

Another little detail about OFMD that makes me go feral: The song the Swede sings in 1x06, immediately after Ed put the dagger away, is called Voi che sapete. It’s a Mozart aria about a young man who experiences love for the very first time and is dazzled by it. Cut to Stede who says “Oh, this is my cue.”

And then, THEN he says: “The siren song has awoken a beast”, meaning the kraken, and if that isn’t fucking brilliant foreshadowing about Ed’s love for Stede being what ultimately leads him to unleash the kraken again.
