This resulted from some speculative talks with a friend. I just love the different ways gargoyles show affection! They are so sweet! But the silliness got the best of me and now head canon is braiding is NSFW for them. JALAPENIA! 🤣

I found myself thinking about Gargoyles (the Disney cartoon) and how much I loved it and Keith David's performance as Goliath. And I realized that I think Goliath was my first real encounter with non-toxic masculinity as a young kid.
I had seen other positive male role models on TV before such Mr. Rogers, the many men on Sesame Street and LaVar Burton in both Reading Rainbow and Star Trek (I was much too young for Star Trek but loved it all the same). But Goliath left an impression on me like few other male characters have.
Goliath embodied so many traits that I was taught as part of "being a man." He was strong. He was strong. He was a leader among men (gargoyles?). He even had a chiseled jaw and impressive physique. But what I remember most is from the very first episode is he never hid or suppressed his emotions.
His mournful wail after believing that Demona, the love of his life, was dead is burned into my memory. This was a man who felt things and showed it. He was never shamed for showing his emotions either. No one told him to stuff it down. Instead, it was part of him that was warmly accepted and treated as normal.
And Goliath didn't just show emotion when he was upset either (the only socially acceptable time for a man to show any emotion (as long as it was anger). He was tender and loving with Demona. He was kind to his peers. He would laugh with his allies but be fierce to his enemies. He was openly fearful of humans after being trapped and feared anything happening to his people. Yet he was never admonished nor shamed for any of it. In fact, others wanted to emulate Goliath and be like him.
I truly have to credit the writing of the character as well as the amazing acting behind it. We need more characters who are strong and mighty and feel their emotions. We need more examples of strength coming from feeling and showing your emotions, rather than them being showed either at odds or mutually exclusive.

Stone by day, warriors by night, we were betrayed by the humans we had sworn to protect, frozen in stone by a magic spell for a 1000 years. Now, here in Manhattan, the spell is broken & we live again! We are defenders of the night, we are #Gargoyles!
Happy 30th Anniversary🌙

The episode "The Mirror" is one of the most fun episodes of Gargoyles. Elisa is transformed into a Gargoyle and the entire clan come to the simultaneous realization that she has been Super Fucking Hot this entire time.
I love that Elisa and Goliath are both monsterfuckers respective to their own species.

This sunglasses company called Gargoyles used to have a motto that said “let a gargoyle sit on your face” which, without context, would have certainly made monsterfuckers disappointed when they found out it was for an eyewear company

Like, okay but really, LOOK at Goliath.
He’s honourable. He’s protective without being overbearing. He’s respectful. He’s intelligent, well-spoken and well-read. He’s a family man. He’s patient but said patience is not endless. He’s open-minded and quick to adapt. He’s charming and forthright. He’s noble. He’s voiced by Keith David.
They basically made the PERFECT MAN and put him in the body of a purple winged creature that can crush bricks with his bare claws did they ever expect anyone to grow up WITHOUT a complex after that?!
