My girl Usagi grew SO MUCH over the course of the series. In the first episode, she’s a scared, confused, and rather incompetent- not to mention reluctant- hero. And who can blame her? She’d lived a sheltered, comfortable life right up to the point where a talking cat gave her a brooch that transformed her into a superheroine tasked with fighting monsters. I sure as hell would want to give up and go home, too.

In the last episode, Usagi’s facing down an insanely powerful and genocidal galactic conquerer who’s possessed by the essence of evil itself, which is quite a step up from the weak monster she fought in episode 1. And yet Usagi isn’t even tempted to give up or run away or even cry. Her experiences over the past 200 episodes have shaped her into a loving, brave, selfless heroine who is empathetic enough to reach out to the person who just killed her friends and is now trying to kill her. Usagi has gone from a scared little girl to a courageous woman who can find hope in even the bleakest of circumstances. 

Usagi’s character development really is among the best I’ve ever seen. Watching her slowly yet surely mature over the course of the series while still retaining the qualities that made her so special is so satisfying.
