Halfway through season 1 on my ADOW rewatch and I honestly love how despite acting like a quintessential broody angstman on the surface, Matthew is actually a massive dork. Not only is he a total nerd obsessed with genetics, he's also so stupidly in love with Diana that he bends over backwards to dote on her like some vampire golden retriever. "I really like you and I think you're pretty neat do you wanna come see my super-secret science lab? YOU DO??? YAY" "Oh you're a history buff? Let me show you my personalized letter from Charles Darwin and name drop Elizabeth Tudor in a casual conversation because you'll totally love that!!!!" Dedicated detectives are part of an elite squad known as the Special Creature Unit based in Venice, Italy. One of their most specialized units lead by Special Agent Diana Bishop and Supervisor Chief Armand Romanus in Oxford, England. 

Their current case has the SCU searching for Phoebe Taylor - a newly sired vampire taken on the night before her wedding and mating ceremony to Marcus Whitmore, son of Matthew DeClermont. The DeClermont family has asked for special Agent Bishop to lead the search for Miss Taylor.

Armand heard the commotion and headed downstairs from his office. He stood beside Diana surveying the family. “My team have been excellently trained to find creatures and prosecute those who have done them harm.”

He stared at the boy curiously wondering why he was asking and who he really was. “Why do you ask? I am a scientist I believe in the rational world.”

Matthew quietly fussed over Diana squeezing her hand. “How do you feel?” He asked quietly.

Covid

Matthew had been enlisted to return as a doctor to fight the virus. He had paused their creature research to instead work on a vaccine. Diana was kept home with the twins, they had returned to Oxford and Matthew kept Diana locked in the Old Lodge. He was barely sleeping and had stopped feeding staying up all night to do research. Diana sighed as she watched her husband working himself into a state of frenzy unable to help him.

Mathew was sitting in his chair with a blanket around his shoulder quietly. “Thank you, this is exceptional.”

Matthew had gotten into an argument with Diana regarding him hunting his son down and killing him. Diana had begged Matthew not to go but Matthew had ignored her and walked out of the house. That was several days ago now…Matthew had been taken hostage and prisoner by Benjamin Fox one of his creations. The family had rallied around his mate desperate to find him and save him.

When Benjamin and those who had helped him were dead and out of the way. They had searched for Matthew. It was Ysabeau that had found him and called his mate.

“Prepare yourself” she said hoarsely, stopping them before they entered. “What he has done to him…” she didn’t finish and simply stepped back.

Matthew was in a dirty room chained to the floor by spikes driven through his arms both of which were severely broken.

There were piles of dead children around him as he drew in shallow rattling breaths indicating his ribs were broken.

A large metal spike had been driven through his neck that made Matthew moan with pain when he was jostled.

He coughed up blood and Ysabeau growled. “He’s bleeding internally we have to get him out of here” Matthew moaned again but didn’t move off the floor, his legs were also badly broken.

He managed to force his eyes open, they were covered in blood and black, his blood rage had come to the forefront but his weakness prevented him from acting on it.

Ysabeau turned to his mate, “he needs to see you to smell you it will comfort him and make him easier to move. Go to him”

Hold My Hand

Diana was raised to believe she was human. Creatures weren’t real. This was especially case after her parents were killed by a vampire and a witch just after she turned 13.  She never knew how they died. It was kept from her. All magic was kept out of her life by her two Aunts. They moved to a safe place and raised her as their own. She had friends but always felt “different.”  

On her 18th birthday, she found her mother’s jewelry box. She hadn’t seen in since the funeral. She heard noise upstairs. The jewelry box was on her bed. She heard the house creak and felt it shift opening it.  

Inside were her mom’s favorite rings, necklaces and a note with a red wax ouroboros seal on it. The note read, “This coin will keep safe and lead you to those who have protected you. Trust your inner magic My Darling daughter. When the time comes, place it in the hand of the owner. He will hold your hand and lead you to your destiny.”  

Diana eyed the note curiously but kept the note and coin with her. After college she bought a house in Auvergne, France next to a castle with 7 towers. The house was abandoned. She did some repairs. She felt safe here, protected, and loved walking in the village and near the castle.  

On the first day of fall, she had gotten permission to walk on the castle’s grounds, gardens, temple and other areas. She sent a written thank-you, a bottle of wine, and a special homemade gift in thanks. She changed into leggings, tank top, light jacket, and sneakers and began her walk.  

On the edge of the castle grounds, she felt something cold, unknown was hunting her sending a chill down her spine. When she stepped onto the castle’s territory, the cold feeling lessened but her gut told her whatever was out there, was close by and is looking to attack her.

He was studying for a paper he was writing and sometimes enjoyed reading in the old library instead of his office at Oxford. Other creatures gave him a wide berth even the other vampires. His family was ancient and not to be trifled with.
