The X-Files, 6:16: Alpha
What is the plot? They're back in the basement office, which is now on a set in LA instead of Vancouver! Mulder makes an internet friend, Karen, who is an expert on dogs and takes "likes dogs more than people" very seriously. Karen tips Mulder off to a mysterious case about something that is said to be a dog. Mulder subsequently lures Scully into it when he tells her about it, and things just...don't really add up. Now Scully is curious! Scully also becomes very curious about Karen and her motives, and everyone becomes curious about how an alleged dog keeps getting in an out of locked buildings!
What does this episode suggest about Mulder and Scully’s relationship with each other? On one hand, as an instance of Scully becoming jealous of a woman who has any interest in Mulder, this feels silly. As Scully says at the end (when she is very insightful), Karen probably saw a kindred spirit in Mulder. However, Karen really doesn't act like someone who is trying to romance anyone, and Scully's concerns about her personal interest in Mulder seem based on things other than the observable evidence. On the other hand, Scully's love for Mulder really is so whole. She really sees him, and she cares about him so much. While I think she was at least a partially off-base about Karen, I think her concern about Mulder being susceptible to manipulation in romantic situations is tragically spot-on.
Where are the aliens? not here, but Mulder got a replacement poster!! (it was Karen's)
