The X-Files, 7:12: X-Cops

What is the plot? First of all, I have never watched Cops, so I have to assume there are things I am missing from this pseudo-crossover, in which Mulder and Scully spend the night of the full moon chasing a dangerous something around an LA neighborhood. Is it a werewolf, as Mulder confidently tells the camera and a skeptical police officer at the beginning? Is it Freddy Krueger? Surely it has claws? Or is it an insect? It's not the Hanta virus, except for when it is! What I know for sure is that Steve and Edy have lived in their house and cultivated their flowers and amassed their keepsake plate collections for 17 years and they love each other, and they're not scared, and they make it through the night unscathed (by anything other than Mulder and Scully having burst into their late-night play-argument because they thought it sounds like a monster attack).

What does this episode suggest about Mulder and Scully’s relationship with each other? Scully doesn't want Mulder to look silly on camera, or rather, doesn't want to look silly on camera herself in association with Mulder.

Where are the aliens? is this fear monster an alien? is it even a Thing?

The X-Files, 7:11: Closure

Mulder's poor sleep continues apace

What is the plot? A "police psychic" approaches Mulder and Scully and tells Mulder exactly what he wants to hear. Scully isn't buying it. They both continue to investigate, and Scully uncovers more evidence of the CSM's involvement in Samantha's disappearance. Mulder and the polic psychic, meanwhile, uncover a sidewalk with the names Samantha and Jeffrey, which Mulder takes to be incontrovertible evidence that the CSM raised Samantha with his son Jeffrey Spender, while it could just be any set of siblings named Jeffrey and Samantha. He's desparate for closure, though, as is the police psychic, whose son disappeared mysteriously. Mulder somehow gets the closure he was looking for, because the series of experiences he has in this episode convince him that his sister is dead. Did Mulder's mom get closure? Does Scully? Do I, the viewer? Unclear!

What does this episode suggest about Mulder and Scully’s relationship with each other? Scully is trying to care for Mulder and protect him from his desperation. She goes back to Washington because she won't indulge his work with the psychic, but she goes immediately to watch his hypnosis tapes and dig into files about his sister. She wants him to get some sleep.

The X-Files, 7:10: Sein und Zeit

they really are masters of emotionally-intense and physically-contorted embraces

What is the plot? A little girl is getting ready for bed, praying the "if I should die before I wake" prayer that gave generations of children (me) anxiety. Her parents tuck her in, and her dad goes to the living room to watch tv and her mom goes to her own room to...write a ransom note as if she's another person who's kidnapped the little girl. And the dad then finds the girl missing, though there is no evidence of anyone else having been in the house. Mulder wants the case, and finds a mom in prison in Idaho who experienced something similar. Meanwhile, his own mother, who may have also experienced something similar, burns her photos and then dies by suicide. Also, there is a very suspicious Santa.

What does this episode suggest about Mulder and Scully’s relationship with each other? Scully balks at performing an autopsy on Mulder's mom because "you're my friend and she's your mother!", but Mulder needs answers to his questions, and who else is he going to ask. Scully stays at Mulder's apartment overnight and plays gatekeeper when Skinner comes by in the morning.

Where are the aliens? was Samantha abducted by aliens, as is repeated several times in this episode, or was it something else???

The X-Files, 7:9: Signs and Wonders

is it Scully and her cross necklace against actual Satan????

What is the plot? It's not a Very Catholic Episodes, it's a very Protestant Sectarianism Episode. Or, that's what it seems like on the surface. A young man has suffered a horrifying death by snake bites, but there is no evidence of the snakes. As the seemingly progressive non-denominational pastor of Blessing Community Church suggests, this probably has something to do with that young man's childhood church - a fundamentalist group that deals in snake handling. But! This is an x-file, and nothing is as it seems. Also, both pastors in this are awful, and one might be the devil!

What does this episode suggest about Mulder and Scully’s relationship with each other? They poke each other playfully about their beliefs, and what they're willing to consider believing. Mulder can understand how people would be drawn to fundamentalism more than Scully can. Scully manages to have as close to no reaction as possible to Mulder's quip that he knew some Catholic school girls who were expert snake handlers.

Where are the aliens? again, some of these other types of shapeshifting and adjacent horrors seem like they could be appealing to aliens

The X-Files, 7:8: The Amazing Maleeni

What is the plot? Wherever Mulder and Scully went at the end of Orison, and whatever they've been doing since, they're back on a case, and they can still surprise each other, or at least act surprised by each other. There is, quite frankly, plenty to be surprised by all around in this episode, though it rests on some classic tropes and archetypes (some innocuous, some not), including: impersonating your twin!; framing someone!; misdirection!; negative stereotypes of Latinos!; professional rivalry(?)!; and, of course, pretending to be physically disabled so as not to be suspected of a crime. Is the whole episode misdirection? Maybe!

What does this episode suggest about Mulder and Scully’s relationship with each other? Like I said, they can still surprise each other. Which is partly the show gimmick ("What, you really think this was magic?"), but I like to think it's also something that's rather beautiful. Scully calls Mulder a skeptic in a faux-insulting tone at one point. And the camera choices when they're talking close to one another really seem like they're doing something, however subtle.

Where are the aliens? the ones who can shape-shift would be great at the turning-your-head-all-the-way-around magic trick
