Also them referring to each other as tide and song, or bottomless sea and unending notes, always as a pair for the whole book is such a gorgeous detail that show how much their bond enhanced throught the story, till the point of becoming one during the fight with the Nameless.

I feel like there is so much to say about this but I agree wholeheartedly. One thing I’ve noticed though is that Avar doesn’t even reflect on what happened with Lourna at all, so I’m curious if this is just her character not really coming to terms with what truly happened and is the reason she doesn’t tell Elzar. I feel like for the reader it’s very easy to point it out, but for the character, this happened right before a major tragedy that she only just recently came to terms with (losing Stellan and Starlight). I’m not sure she’s trying to obfuscated the truth from Elzar, I just don’t think she’s had time to look back on what happened with Lourna but everything is about to come full circle for sure in Tempest Breaker and she is going to be forced to face what she did head on. Hell, I could see Keeve saying something to either Elzar or the Council and then Avar has to answer for why she didn’t say anything. With everything leading to Trials, I think it’s setting up Avar to be the one who faces the hardest/biggest trial that Soule has alluded to because she has been put on a pedestal for so long that she’s going to get knocked down.

There are so many loose ends honestly I feel like it could be very easy to gloss over some of the biggest character development points with how little of the story is really left. either that or everything goes to down the drain and then we are reminded that this is the High Republic and not everyone gets a happy ending 🫠

one big thing that bothers me a lot about temptation is that elzar does not know about lourna. it kind of…..spoils the entirety of the book. we are meant to unwaveringly believe in the romance, the trust, the unshakable devotion and faith they have in one another, when there is a very big very ugly skeleton in avar’s closet? elzar was on ledalau for weeks, working day in and day out to get better, in big part because he didn’t want to poison what he and avar share, because he couldn’t believe such darkness as his could ever be present in her, while at that exact time she was out there, closer to falling than any of them had come to. what kind of foundation for a fairytale romance is this? considering the entirety of his personal arc from that day has been about punishment and amends because of a situation that’s very similar to avar’s (in the base line, at least. one was a vengeance-fuelled hunt, one was a desperate misunderstanding). he lost almost everything, she lost very little. he’s been pushed to confess, called selfish and not worthy of his late friend, she has not felt the need to tell anyone at all. are we meant to not see it as a big deal? to forget? to think that he would not care at all? there are limits to suspension of disbelief and this is mine. avar’s reckoning with lourna is surely to come in the audiodrama, but what can happen there that would be realistic, satisfying and not ruin everything? very very little.
