At seven years old, the first hole was punctured into my heart against my will, and I decided that day that I would let nobody do that to me again.

At seven years old, I began building the wall around my heart, with myself as the only person with entry access.

At seven years old, I learned the skill of just getting by.

At twenty-three years old, not much has changed.

I’ve been carving holes in my heart since the first day I felt pain- at seven years old.

I want to know your favorite foods, your favorite movies, and your favorite drinks, so I can show up unexpectedly, but never empty handed. I want to know your favorite time of the year and your favorite places to watch the sunset. I want to know what makes you laugh so hard your stomach hurts. I want to know your favorite songs, so I can sing them horribly at the top of my lungs. I want to know the things that make you happy, in case I stop being one of them.

I actively work very hard to focus on the now and not look too far into the future, to live in the moment and enjoy the small things as they come. This has been a challenge for me, as I desire to know all of the things that my future holds for me.

My future used to terrify me because I never knew how much control I would have over it. I never knew in what direction the dominos would fall. I feared how each and every decision of mine would impact the rest of my life.

With time, I’ve slowly began to let life take its course as I guide the sails. With patience, I have found that each day brings its own successes, challenges, triumphs and failures. With love, I have found that no matter how many times I fall, I will always have the strength to get back up. With her, I have found that even if I do nothing else right, she is my one good thing, she is the one thing I have done right.

I will never know what exactly the future holds, but I know she is a part of it, and that’s all I need to know.
