Bath time! I was confused when the bossman took my bucket away from me. Moments later, I was soaked and less confused. @@boys My elephant remained unfazed. [24.jan.2017]

I'm Going To Have To... Talk To People?
It's 3am and elephants START TOMORROW and I suddenly realized that I'm going to have to interact with people on the regular for a week at Elephant Nature Park. Whaaaaaat. I probably averaged one conversation per day in Bali, and.... 2/week since coming to Thailand? Like maybe 3 during the week in Phuket and 1 (at the airport on way here) within the past week. This could get weird. [22.jan.2017, Chiang Mai]

Chiang Mai Sunday Night Market.
So so great, but so crowded! I had already eaten that massive Mexican lunch so I couldn’t eat here but IMMA NEXT SUNDAY. I’m also excited to try the wine. Last night of vacation seems like the appropriate time for that.
I did get this lemon green tea popsicle though. For like 16 cents. They were making the popsicles right there, in like 30 different flavors.
Also next Sunday, I will buy an elephant mug.

Now that I finally realized what “plain” “iced tea” in Thailand is [after almost two weeks. idiot idiot idiot], ICED TEA ALL DAY ALL NIGHT. Also I *totally* forgot about the weirdness that often accompanies resting friendly face; I assume I got a break until now because language barrier. But today a lady started talking to me (while I was waiting for my iced tea) AND THEN HUGGED ME. And then she asked me if I felt hot. Yes, it’s summer here, and I’m gross and sweaty and sticky, and it serves you right for TOUCHING ME.
And then this random little girl hung out with me at the music fest. Those were acceptable hugs because ADORABLE. Her mom was a vendor walking around and wtf not even within sight except she finally showed up once after ten minutes, said like two sentences to the kid (in Thai), and left again. WTF. When the girl decided she wanted us to play in the dirt, I left. Kids are gross.

This was so weird. They just keep street cleaning apparatus IN TREES? And ppl stuff trash into the bushes at the bottom? I only noticed the broom at first, but them I saw a lady throw a bag away IN THE BUSH. [21.jan.2017, Chiang Mai]

I have very little faith that they excel at either of these things. [21.jan.2017, Chiang Mai]

Ping River, to the east of city, near Chinatown. Hung out here forever because my stupid grabcar driver went to my hotel instead of picking me up here because he was confused about how to use the app on which he earns his livelihood (?). I was so annoyed and snitty but then he was really nice and I felt just a little bad. It would have been a 30 minute walk. Grab ended up taking 45. OK, I don't feel so bad for being angry. But it was just under $1 (with the discount code). So maybe I feel a little guilt. But it was his mistake that cost him all that time. Yeah, I'm good. [21.jan.2017, Chiang Mai]

Downtown Chiang Mai is surrounded by a wall and a moat (something I should probably research) which is REALLY PRETTY. Also I had real Mexican food today for the first time since home (so over a month omggg) and it was so good and I was so happy and uncomfortably full but happyyyyy. I also felt pleased with myself that I walked downtown instead of cabbing it (just a mile, but still).

So I thought there was a sister march in Bangkok that I was missing but turned out it was these people plus maybe 30 more who met at a restaurant. So not that bummed to have missed it.
There was nothing in Chiang Mai when I checked, but this after-the-fact map looks like something went down here too and I was so bummed to have missed it. But then saw, according to the Wikipedia article, that it was a “low key picnic” and couldn’t find any followup so I'm just pretending I didn’t miss anything.

Temples are a big deal too. I didn't go inside any because I wasn't dressed appropriately (no bare shoulders) but also I'm sooooo over temples so I didn't wanna. [21.jan.2017, Chiang Mai]

Markets are such a big deal in Asia. And they sell EVERYTHING. And also one of those eels ESCAPED THE TUB. And also most of Chiang Mai smells vaguely like durian always. Seen much much more durian here than anywhere else.

This couple was taking wedding photos and trying to get the pigeons to sit on them and WHYYYYY. Gross. Their expressions tho. Bahaha.
This was one of those squares where ppl sell birdfeed but the birds were really not into sitting on people (in wedding attire or not).

FINALLY, I did stuff again! After boring BKK/sick tummy/flight to here, back on the go! I really like Chiang Mai!
I had a grabcar (like uber) drop me at a restaurant I randomly clicked on in Google maps (pro-traveller tips right here). The Grab driver was so nice - he told me a promo code to use on my other rides (50baht off/ride, up to 3 rides!).
The place was called Dash, and I was seated in the garden and ate crispy tamarind chicken and drank freshly squeezed limeade and I’m pretty sure my eyes rolled back into my head several times. So. So. So. Good. No idea how they get the chicken that crispy, but I’ve never experienced that level of flavorful crunch factor. Also, food and drink total = under $6.
Other assorted restaurants I walked by (banh mi place HAD NO BANH MI ON THE MENU LIESSSSSSS), pretty streets. Boutique hotel called Sculpture that I think looked amazing! Must remember to look it up.
